Kiriko's age wouldn't have mattered if they didn't force her into Hanzo and Genji's story. Her lore with them is that she trained and grew up with them and that's it. She had no major role in the fight that happened between them as far as I know. Why couldn't she just have her own story that is separate from theirs?

The other part that I think is super frustrating about it is that the game has, for pretty much its entire existence, tried to feed us lore through these little teasers and Easter Eggs. It would be one thing if they had this big campaign or all this explicit lore content with just some minor inconsistencies in the things like background art or random character lines. But when they have relied almost exclusively on those little things to drip feed us the lore they can't afford to have all these kinds of inconsistencies.

I have a large family and some older cousins who have children younger than me. Not too large a gap I suppose, some around 8-10 years though. I have a bit of an older brother kind of relationship with some and that's kind of how I had interpreted their relationship. Genji and Hanzo are close to Kiriko's mom and maybe closer in age (at least Hanzo right) but they treat her daughter like a younger siblings (Genji) or uncle role (Hanzo)

I'm pretty sure the "over 100" one, which comes from his Deadlock skin saying "Deadlock Rebels est. 1976" (the gang he and Ashe founded), can be explained because the name of the gang comes from Deadlock Gorge, the location of the Route 66 map. So rather than being "Deadlock Rebels: est. 1976", it's "Deadlock (est. 1976) Rebels". That or it's just a skin detail not meant to be taken seriously.

Here’s the problem: they need to hire staff that not only care, but specialise in that field. Writing staff: Hire someone that knows the lore inside and out but also has some great writing stories. Map development: Hire people that understand the characters and their gameplay but also has experience developing maps, but not on an industrial level; it blocks people out! Here’s an example: SEGA held job interviews for new writing staff for the Sonic franchise; their only requirement was that your know the lore from external sources and can pitch a good story. They hired fans to make Sonic Mania rather than shut down a group willing to make games for free. And look at the Sonic franchise now! 6 years ago it was dying a slow, painful death and now it’s blowing people away! Seriously, if you are a Sonic fan but haven’t been impressed with the last few entries, try out Sonic Frontiers; it’s absolutely brilliant! Support companies that value their fans… kinda like Bungie did before they became greedy cash grabbers.

There was/is an exchange between Mei and Mercy comparing looks/age and talking about why they look younger. Mercy LOOKS in her 30s, so it would make sense if she was 40s. Mei is 33! Mei is YOUNGER THAN PHARAH. Pharah who lorewise was too young to have joined the original overwatch! Also, Pharah is 9 years older than Brig, which does make some sense, but still weird.

11:28 this right here is why this is SUCH an issue. This is not to say that there are not quality people at the company, but more so that they will not KEEP quality people. For such an error to be made in Kiriko’s bio tells us that there may not be anyone there actually working on the game that was there during Kiriko’s development. The simplest answer to why there are so many issues with this new lore release is that there isn’t anyone left that helped create these hero’s.

There's actually a bit of dialogue between Claire and Tracer in the Liberation mission that talks about why Tracer hasn't aged (chronal disassociation, apparently). As for the rest of the disparities... they obviously just never thought things out before tacking lore onto some of the characters. Would have been better off leaving the ages a mystery.

I agree with pretty much everything, that the ages makes absolutely no sense. I may have accepted it, if Kiriko would have been 27. That would have scratch just barely the way how she acts and how she still trained with Hanzo and Genji. But just barely. But what I can accept, or at least somewhat see, is the 5 years difference between Mercy and Pharah. In that pic, with somewhat turning a blind eye, you could argue Pharah is 13,14 and Mercy 18,19.

From what people on Reddit have been saying, it was apparently confirmed (no idea by who🤷‍♂) that Mercy is not actually part of Overwatch but merely visiting as a university student prodigy and aged around 17 while Pharah is around 12. Its not good from a romantic relationship perspective (which they seem to be moving them towards) unless this is the only time they meet until they are in their 30's and even then it's a bit odd bordering on creepy. tbh given the inconsistent nature of the early artwork including both this one with Pharah and the one with Tracer in Overwatch I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard is forced to go back and properly sort out what is cannon and what is not.

Ok, but Phara’s story has her wanting to join Overwatch, but it disbanding before she was old enough. Mercy was shown to go on multiple missions which shows how long she has been a part of Overwatch for a long time which means Phara should have aged up enough by then to join. If that’s still not enough, then let’s look at Genji who is only three years older who also went on multiple missions like Mercy. How could Phara still be a child then?

This kind of lore thing has always been a huge issue for me with Overwatch, even going back to the days of OW1. From the start, they would have these inconsistencies surrounding the lore. On the surface, it is easy to just dismiss these small discrepancies as being some background error. But when the game doesn't have an actual laid out story and is instead telling all of its story through the little Easter Eggs buried in the little details you can't have this kind of inconsistency. I used to give Michael Chu a hard time because of all the lore issues the first game had. But, like many things related to Blizzard products, it has become clear that the people actually making the game are being hamstrung by the suits. Chu almost certainly left because he wanted to really be able to do a lot of with the lore and actually tell the story he and the team had been trying to tell for the last 7 years only to be blocked at every turn by the marketing team. That is 100% what has happened with all this new lore too. The team is trying to really put something together but you have the marketers saying "Mercy can't be over 40 because that is less appealing to our key demo" or "Kiriko needs to be younger to resonate with the newer players coming to the game".

Personally I think they changed the ages for pharah and mercy to just keep off the complaints on starts with gro and ends with ming. It seems blizzard wants to push that ship and it's been an issue since they hinted pharah having feelings and supposedly mercy going to ask someone out. Blizzard changing the ages when we already have art isn't going to reverse the issue you are trying to force. We also had so many auntie voice lines from mercy to pharah in ow1. I'm getting tired of blizzard erasing old voice lines to create a new lore and saying nothing. Who hurt orisa lol?

Mercy and Pharah's ages have been consistent for some time; the even more egregious thing is that they originally made mercy 34 (and she would have been 36 now). They had to backtrack that to at least the same age as Cassidy 37 (Now 39). I'm just taking the wheel away from them. For starters there's no convincing me that Moira's not an august birthday Virgo (joking). But in all actuality, Sojourn and Soldier 76 should be around the same age as each other. That's how they come off in the novel, not as (I'm over a decade your senior), and IMO Jack and her should be further away from Reaper and Ana. I personally saw them both in their early fifties last game and now would be mid fifties. I do see them at least fixing Kiriko. That's embarrassingly bad. If she's training with them at 10, well, Genji's already been skewered by Hanzo. Genji's ability to know her stops when he was 25 and hanzo was 27.

Because she put genji back together and they weren’t that far apart in age at that point, and the lore with that is that her and genji developed a friendship (possibly more after they disbanded blackwatch as they started getting much closer) by staying up late on the Swiss base and talking and sharing stories. That’s a lot easier if they’re still closer in age, and a lot more awkward if the gap is farther apart. Especially since they were pen pals for awhile too, and we know that. But I do think a lot of things are off. Wayyyy off. Sojourn would need to be older if she was in her thirties and mercy joined ow as a prodigy at 19. She was working there for a few years before ow brought her genji with the intent of making him a living weapon under her nose after they promised her any of her work and technology wouldn’t be used to harm anyone. And you expect me to believe she would even be friendly towards pharah and Ana after overwatch took her technology and made Ana’s biorifle with it after promising her, that any technology she contributed to overwatch wouldn’t be used for harm? I think she’d hold a hard and fast grudge, one that wouldn’t be so easily forgiven, and she wouldn’t even much care for pharah as a vigilante “justiciar” as she’s described, Mercy might be cordial with her, but blowing people up and killing them with explosives after mercy lost her parents to a fucking artillery strike would almost certainly leave a bitter taste about pharah in her mouth let’s be honest here, so the fact that they’re adding in these random shipper catering voicelines is really not sitting well when you think about it for more than five minutes. She might not hate pharah, but she wouldn’t be pleased with her trajectory in life after knowing her as a child and probably attending to her as her doctor at some point. Moreover, pharah should definitely be younger, how is a 28 year old world renowned sniper in her prime going to have time to plan for maternity leave, have a whole ass baby with a dude we never see again, and then raise said baby perhaps with the help of pharahs father or not we don’t actually know, and somehow make that work. It… doesn’t make sense? Especially not while at the height or right after the height of the omnic crisis??? That’s the worst time to get pregnant and have a baby???? Ana could’ve easily had pharah when she was forty and pharah would’ve been just fine sitting around kiriko’s age instead. She could be nine in that photo if you wanted to push it, and genji was out of the picture perhaps because he already left for the shambali monks, or he could even be the one taking the photo cause he’s technically and og strike team member anyways, and mercy doesn’t age the same as she used to due to her exposure to nano biology healing mediums and the Valkyrie suit, it’s part of her lore and her kit. Back in the day mercy used to be one of the only healers to heal over time, and the reason was because of her suit. That’s why she looks young still. Which is reasonable, considering it wouldn’t be the first time experimental technology had side effects on an scientist, it just so happens that this time it actually benefitted the scientist rather than killed them or gave them cancer outright (rip Marie curie, you were a legend queen)

Even if they removed her training with the Shimada Brothers, it is fine. But, for some dumb reason they like to connect characters from the same country in Lore. Since Kiriko is Japanese, she has to be connected to at least one other Japanese character. All Australian characters are connected, which at least fits in the lore. The ages just don't make sense. I recall part of Pharah's lore was that she was too young to join Overwatch ... but Mei who is younger was able to? Unless Mei's age is ignoring her years in cyro, which would be odd. But, you have Tracer and Winston both younger who did. Winston could be argued "He's a gorilla." And Tracer and Mei have possible explanations with their lore.

I think there is some ageism with the women in OW lol Older women = unattractive (according to blizzard anyway.) The idea of trying to age these characters is kind of weird anyway, some characters aged between ow 1 and 2 while others seemingly did not. But the reality is that the heros will most likely NEVER age as this is a live service game and they want to continue it as long as possible. so trying to nail down their ages is kind of pointless because they will never get older. I doubt mercy will ever get aged up because the main money maker in her design is her sexuality (sorry but it is true.) Despite claiming they want to crack down on þorn, overwatch knows the main appeal to a lot of their women is their sexuality/beauty. Some characters should be older or younger, but that likely will never be the case as they are marketing towards specific demographics in order to make the most money...

I’ll say this. For Tracer you can say that her entirety as a whole she is stuck in time due to that accident when she was a pilot. Winston made that device for her so that she wouldn’t phase in and out of existence. While that helps she’s still not cured. As for Mercy she’s one of the most skilled medics in the overwatch world with the ability to revive you. I wouldn’t be surprised where she manages to keep herself from aging too quickly. Plus I think it was kind of confirmed during her interaction with Mei when they talk about how do they keep themselves seem young. As for everyone else it’s fair game, idk lol but that’s my lil theory.

I’m guess in part these ages were mixed up with both time of release ages and not aging them like Orisa to the current ages as of Overwatch 2. To Mercy should be a few years older. They aged some heroes like Genji and Hanzo but not some like Sojourn. Kiriko was probably 21 at the time of the animation and they haven’t aged her up from that time. She needs to be like 10 years older minimum by the time OW2 came out.

Yeah, to be honest, he's killing 3 characters in one strike: Pharah's whole meaning in lore is like to be only lesbian, so they could make money on Pride events or use her as a bait to get away from their scandals, like happened this year with PvE and some problems involving sexual harassment when they revelead her and then Bap as bi. Mercy became extremely toxic, especially on Genji for a...drawing? Dude, they're in their late 30s, they're not teenagers. This is terrible writing. I was confused with Kiriko's and the Shimada's ages as soon as they shared her reveal videos on release. We already knew since then she was early 20's and for years that the Shimada's were in their mid to late 30's. Then, they showed that image of them where she looks barely after a toddler's age, maybe around 5-6 years old, and the Shimada kid looking around 10. Which was weird to hear that her mother trained the Shimada's because of the said age gap and image. That image is really throwing things off. Let's assume Hanzo was 10. Kiriko's mother would be in her mid to late 20's perhaps? That would be reasonable to have at least 10-15 years experience and expertise to train the kids, right? Unless we don't need that long to learn and then also have the ability to teach, or maybe she was a prodigy of some sort. However, if the kids are 16-19 years age difference, and her kid looked like a Toddler, wouldn't they be in their 20's? Yeah, a fellow 20 year old could teach them but I would assume they would want someone older to have that experience. She would have to be in her 30's perhaps. It all still makes sense, and people do have kids early 20s up to their late 30's usually but what throws everything off is that drawing and interactions of them being kids together and learning together. I would understand if there was only some inconsistency regarding the heroes we got in overwatch 1, as at that point they probably didn't know that they might end up actually having a story where these characters meet and their background stories - including their age - should make sense. But these ages are really all over the place. When looking at a trend, steamdb might not be the best option for Overwatch 2. The steam release follows a quite typical pattern for existing games with external launchers that come to steam: A peak of interest at / shortly after release on steam, followed by a pretty harsh drop before stabilizing at some low point. You would see about the same picture if you used Google trends for example.

Orisa is kind of a grey area. Not as sentient as the Omnics that became alive because of Aurora. Because at the end of the day. She's a program AI. The Omnics that became sentient. Act like humans who can have limits. Orisa had to adapt, because she's an AI, she had to learn to defend Numbani but do it in a way where she wouldn't be a threat to society. Echo is also a grey area character, she's literally an AI designed to copy people. She acts the most like Doctor Liao. But slowly developes into her own person. Omnics from Aurora. Act more human. While Echo and Orisa are like a mix between acting human, but still having some qualities of being a robot.

Orisa was 4 months old in OW1 Orisa is 1 in OW2 Everyone else aged 2 years Orisa retains all of her memories and knows some components were simply upgraded. Either her age randomly reset itself or Blizzard messed up Edit: The real issue is that this assumes Winston initiated recall, then two years passed where nothing happened before people jumped in to help him. I can only see this as plausible for Mei because she's literally trapped alone in Antarctica with no discernable way out, but... she's there.

Easiest explanation is that the time from recall is a year and some change. That's why some characters aged up by two years and others only one.

This may seem a little tin foil hat, but hear me out. When Baptist says to Mercy that he could hook her up with someone she states that she already has her eye on someone. Now, I’m sure a lot of us want/think/hope she’s talking about Genji, but this is what I’m gathering from the ages: I believe they gave Phara and Mercy a 5 year age difference to allow them to have a less “creepy” age gap so they can push them as a couple. However I really don’t care WHAT Blizzard tries to say, I’ve seen the old lore pics, and that is straight up not okay. 😆
