I'm a Platinum Zenyatta player and would like to add how valuable the right click can be. Fully charged, it can deal up to 200 damage (400 if all are headshots) and can be useful at the beginning of a match to melt a player. Recently I was playing KoTH and ended up eliminating the enemy Reaper just as he came into view at the beginning of the match, resulting in an immediate 5 vs 6 which led to our team winning the fight and initially capturing the first hill. Another use is against Torb turrets or Bastion, where a quick peek and burst will take them out with a much lower chance of being picked off. Also, if the enemy Mei has just hidden in her Ice Heal, if timed right she can be solo taken out by a charged up shot that pings the head once or twice.

You listed Genji as a good harmony orb target. Anyone that plays healers regularly knows that it's Genji's job to get low on health and call for heals while being absolutely sure to stay out of your line of sight.

skevoid I'd always go for tanks or someone who's gunna go upfront and take damage or who'll need health the most, like Reaper, Roadhog and so on. I try not to heal flankers cause they'll disappear out my sights, get the orb removed before it's even useful and if they stay alive, they'll either call out to me to heal them and put myself (usually as the only support, also the entire team) at risk of get trapped and die. So yeah. Heal with the guys who you know will take damage and whose job it is to take damage, like D.Va, Reaper and so on :D

The big projectile hitboxes work in Zenyatta's favor, if the enemy are bunched up you can score a lot of hits just hucking orbs in their direction. Also, discord amps all damage, so your quick melee is way more effective than normal. I've kicked so many Genjis to death I swear. I like to play Zen on defense with Torb, the armor pack makes Zen super tough and since he has shields it's not constantly in need of replacement, and Torb's own weapon and the turret both benefit from the discord if you can toss it on a flanker.

Just to add an example on why transcendence is vital: I've had the perfect test yesterday. I was in a solo queue in Nepal and immediately went Zen, since I've mained him since the open beta and he's a pretty much my default, main character. Close to the end of the game, we were playing on the Nepal map with the smallest temple- you know, the one that's not indoors and isn't a fancy dome. It came down to pretty much this: Our team, with me, Zarya, Lucio, Reinheardt, Genji and Mei The enemy, with, as far as I can see, A Zarya player of their own, Roadhog, Pharah, Reaper, Lucio, and someone else, but not a Zen. It was approaching overtime and we held the point. And then, a perfect storm: Their team, with a very coordinated attack, placed a graviton surge, catching most of our team. On the exact same moment, our Zarya fired her own Graviton Surge, so both teams faced eachother, on opposite entrances to the point, almost everyone caught. Naturally, the moment I heard Mother Russia saying she's gonna take me to her black hole gulag, I ulted. No one else ults. Just gunfire. And then, the killfeed exploded. Blue on the left, Red on the right, names popping on the screen like mad. Athena yelling "TEAM KILL!" No one died on our team. I believe this is a great case study since the greater difference between both gravity bound hunks of flesh and gunfire was one ultimate. And it made such a difference. Sadly, I don't have a recording software on my PC, so I didn't catch the event as it happened. I had to take a highlight on my phone without the sound, maybe I'll upload it one day. It's one of my proudest moments as Zen.

My only problem is when the enemy uses the "Fuck you Zenyatta" team comp, which involves a Tracer, a Genji, and a Reaper. Because Zenyatta has a wider positure because of his position, he is essentially a floating ball, which I feel is in favor of Tracer and Reaper's weapon spread. Genji is usually a persistent bastard that is a nuisance to hit if he is actively dodging me. It is really devastating towards Zenyatta if your team does nothing about it. I was on a team where the McCree could not hit the Tracer at all, and of course she always comes to me. I can usually get her to around 25% health, but then she just recalls and kills me. And you have no idea how many times a Reaper wraith forms, floats toward me (since he has a slightly faster move speed in wraith form), and unloads his shotgun as soon as he can, and my team seemingly doesn't care. I have tried using alt fire, but it doesn't work too often.

Yeah, I always pick Reaper as a Zen counter. In other news, I was playing Zen yesterday and I double-Discord-headshotted a Reaper. He went down to 1 hp and walked over a full heal and killed me >:/ and the worst part was the friendly Zarya standing behind him not shooting him or shielding me >:O
@schitzie8 жыл бұрын
In that case the enemy team is running three DPS which limits them to either two healers or two tanks, not both. If your team is anything resembling a standard composition, you should ask for a bit of protection from characters like Roadhog, Zarya, or even McCree who can assist you against flankers. Any flanker will pretty quickly melt against a Zen+1 under the effects of Discord. Positioning yourself such that you can more easily spot these flankers AND that your tanks will be the first threat they encounter is key: you can return fire and assist your tanks in countering these flankers, and your would-be assassins have the unenviable job of dealing with a constantly healing 500hp hero that now does 30% more damage to them while a robotic monk hurls magic orbs at them.
@ZeroPointAlpha7 жыл бұрын
Better add Doomfist to that list. I've been solo-ulted and fist-fucked by Doomfist more times than I care to remember just in the past few days alone. He either gets you in one shot with the right-click, or he ults you, or if you actually manage to dodge his ultimate he just right-click charges you and insta-kills you anyway. :/
@dmar36518 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with this guide. Anyone can spam a discord orb on random targets, but knowing WHO is priority and When to switch the orb to a Newer priority, for both harmony and discord orbs, is what makes or breaks a Zenyatta. You are there to Support your team. Key word here is "Support" and not "Heal". Zenyatta helps his team "Win the fight, by making the enemy weaker and more likely to Lose the fight". People will always appreciate you and what you do if you know how to play a Zenyatta. But be warned. The enemy teams will also Mark YOU if they know you are helping out your team well. McCree, Hanzo, Widowmaker, Winston, Roadhog, Pharah, Soldier and Reinhardt. These heroes will specifically mark you as a priority kill target, even over a mercy, lucio or even ana, if they feel that you are too dangerous to be left alive. All in all, great guide.

I noticed what really helped me in this video is that when you are in team fights with Zenyatta you actually put the discord orb on tanks LAST. I like how you prioritized discording attack characters like Genji and McCree as well as supports, then shifted to focusing down tanks. This made my Zenyatta gameplay MUCH more effective. Quickly killing threats is better than trying to melt those tanks right off the bat, and it's also important to kill people on their own harassing the back line. Thanks!

As a 40 hour Zenyatta main, I gotta say, this isn't a half-bad guide, but, I think that one of the most important things to mention is when you need to get up in people's faces and do work. Sometimes you do need to do that. If a rein is almost down, and you are near him, then get behind his shield and finish him off, because your teammates may be too busy to do it, and it'll come back to bite you in the ass if you don't. Going after enemy supports in team fights isn't a bad idea either, a lot of the time.

Yeah, Zen is capable of huge damage and people don't realize it, without discord its about 115dps and with it he does 150dps and headshots arent so difficult to land with a forgiving hitbox so you can output 300dps on tanks pretty easily which is why he's a hard counter to all tanks

Very good guide man, very well done. Zen has been my favorite hero ever since the beta, and it's for the reason, which you so nicely summarized, is that he's the perfect mix of DPS but still there to support your team. I've tended to play characters like the Druid-type characters, good support, decent dps... master of none, but flexible. Additionally I like the awareness and multi-tasking needed to play Zen. My favorite hero by quite a margin. Very well done!

I'm good about keeping my orbs out and about, but the positioning was the hardest part to learn. I started by playing as far back as possible as Zen has no escapes, but I realized I was too much of a target for flankers. From the video, I got the sense I need to play Zen on the back line of a team fight and help more with pushes rather than only take out the out of position enemies on occasion. Cheers!

As someone who likes to do a lot of callouts, I find Zen is perfect for me. His orbs allow me to set the pace of battle, and his position in the backline gives me good view of the battlefield. Plus, it's super easy to focus teammates when you can base your suggestions around reasons rather than just acting like you're ordering them around. "Pull back" or "Don't overextend" becomes "Fall back so I can heal you" or "I can't follow you that far up." "Focus Mercy" becomes "Mercy's discorded." People are so much less likely to go on tilt when you phrase your ideas as you supporting them rather than you telling them what to do. This means that a good Zen can essentially save games by focusing an uncoordinated team on teamplay and being supportive when things seem dire. And because he's in the back, he's got a better view for doing that than Mercy does, and more DPS for covering some of his team's slack than Lucio does. There's less need to shout "protect me" and hope your team follows through when you can protect yourself (though you should still alert your team to threats in your backline). Even in games that go poorly at first, a few FRIENDLY (keyword FRIENDLY) "we got this, we got this" encouragements and "this enemy's here, this enemy's there" announcements can work wonders.

This is the way I see it, Zenyatta is a support pusher not a support healer. There have been support classes in many different kind of games where their focus is to actually help push. Adding a damage amplifier on an enemy team and keeping a team member steadily healed are key items for pushing forward. Hell even his Ult is great for pushing in team fights.
@SethKolbePrefect7 жыл бұрын
Yes, his ult is best used defensively though since you have no attack while ulting. Which is why its smart to throw out your orbs before ulting

Great video! One other target I like to have is Zarya for the orb, since Reinhardt and her tend to be part of the death ball when Winston is not picked. Her own personal shield regeneration after 3 seconds of not taking damage and a harmony orb, a good Zarya will just be a massive wall of effective health. I agree on the ultimate as responsive as well, leaving yourself out of the fight for transcendence is a big dps loss despite it being a good initiator at times. Ideally you discord orb the Genji then pop transcendence though. Finally for the footsies, and distance, I generally try to be behind the last hard cover besides Reinhardt. This means I can peak if need be ahead, yet have a way or two out to real cover unless he gets pinned or shield is down, etc. Or on Koth maps, off to one side hiding and peaking both ingresses is usually good too.
@twilightknight1238 жыл бұрын
After playing Zen enough, I'm come up with a nice reminder for myself every time I get into a stressful situation. I discord orb whoever I would put a harmony orb on and vice versa. Sure it's an easy thing to remember, but it's nice to only think about one thing during a hectic team battle. Basically, who you put orbs on doesn't change. It's just what team they're n that determines what orb they get.
@AdrianGK478 жыл бұрын
A tip he didn't mention is that his secondary fire is very underrated. Going behind cover, charging your orbs, and then peaking out of cover to release him is such a huge instant damage dealer! Most people don't expect it either so for me using this gets me huge killstreaks all the time

@fiveyenyato60018 жыл бұрын
Or Mercy, but yea.
@YourOverwatch8 жыл бұрын
Ana can work but she's another off healer, the most common is Zen/Lucio on offence and Zen/Mercy of defence. That's by no means a hard rule. A Zen-less setup is quite viable - E

108 Heals per second is pretty solid healing to me. She just has trouble with sustain.

huckmart 99 Zen and Ana are much harder than mercy lol ana especially
@SethKolbePrefect7 жыл бұрын
Zen combos well with any support, except sym, if combo'd with lucio you're very defensive since lucios ult counters burst and yours counters suistained damage, if combo'd with mercy you are able to dive really well, if combo'd with ana it can be powerful but just watch your positioning since both of you are immobile and if you die your team will suffer, overall I think mercy zen is the best but if they have a zarya run lucio zen

I think you forgot about the nanogrenade. It ruins zen's ult almost completely.

Im thinking about getting gold for his orbs. I really like playing as zen.
@Praesidium-oq7ii8 жыл бұрын
don't do it get it for a character you play whose golden weapon will be noticed, zenyattas are to small and are already gold
@tobben278 жыл бұрын
i have 50+ hours on Zen, he's my favourite, but it wouldn't get his golden ballz. No matter the colour of skin (or gold wep), they always fire out as blue so it's not very visible.
@linkno18 жыл бұрын
But they're still gold around his neck, right? If you used, like, a black skin, wouldn't you notice then? Mostly black skin + golden balls is both a possible high status symbol with certain tribes *and* the only golden weapon in game I don't think would look tacky.

lol i actually got the balls and they look smooth af

Like the guide, zen is in my top 3 characters and actually was one of my go to in ranked (I was in late 60s all the time). I almost 100% agree with your opinion, but would like to add that actually one of the most important things for zen is to make his orbs work all the time. I do not agree that he is mainly damage dealer support, he is 50\50 in my books and I usually can even solo heal with him (especially on defence) with getting end game cards for 25% damage heal average. But anyways, nice work, loved it!

Tranquility can also be great for escaping out of a situation in you have low health, and need to regroup with your team very far away. While no the best use of it, it has actually saved more than one putting it into overtime.

@3lit3gn0m38 жыл бұрын
1:10 It won't save someone who's being focus'd, that's for sure, but if that person can use their own kit to escape, you should absolutely make sure you get an orb on them so that said Reaper or whatnot will have some HP when he leaves Wraith Form. I know you're not saying to ignore low health people, of course...I've simply played Zen since 150 HP and am/was often the only healer; my best game was 20k healing done, so I can't help but feel his heal is underestimated when paired with teammates who know when to retreat. The rest of your commentary was actually quite insightful. I've always tried putting it on allies who are going in for a pick, but never had it as an actual rule for myself; perhaps I can be more conscious of it now.

I'm a new Zen main since late season 3. Mainly was a tank player, using Rein, DVa, Zarya. Since I started using him on qp i realized how powerful he is for both DPS and healing. I think I'll be using him for quite sometime and I've been loving it. I call out my discord to my random solo queue team mates. Season 4 has been way more successful for me as I use Zen and my tanks. Best win streaks I've had are with Zen though. Discord is amazing!

1 thing I like to note with a harmony orb, is that it can make any self sustaining character almost unkillable, as long as they are able to disengage, or otherwise ignore damage, for example, on a roadhog, he can regen half his health at any time on top of constant healing from the orb, if he doesn't get rushed on by 3+ people, he can stick around for ages, and zarya can use her shield to block damage while also healing damage already taken, making her a much stronger tank. Its admittedly not as useful on a hero like rein most of the time.

Great guide. Too many people are frivolous with their discords, and you make a lot of really good points with prioritizing targets, especially 'assassins' or 'back-line harassers.'
@Esthadingens7 жыл бұрын
One amongst many once referred to Zarya and Zenyatta as "Commanders", heroes who could amplify the value of other heroes and enabling them. Probably the reason why they turned out two of my strongest picks in Season 1 (Zarya not so much anymore).

As a Zen main, thank you, I need to sit back a little more, I do try for kills a lot, but up on the front line when I shouldn't. I am good at healing with zen however and I know when to use ult so I'm ok in that regard, I just need to back away from front line a bit haha. Zen is ameizing because of his versatility though, he can step in to heal when mercy or lucio are dead, he can control the battle somewhat with his discord orb and can hold the control point in clutch moments using his ult until his team get there to back him up (which I've done on many occasions) not to mention save a team from certain slaughter when genji, mei or zarya ult.
@CatalystCloud8 жыл бұрын
May have been mentioned already, but zens charged attack can be fully charged even if the charge exceeds ammo, similar to zarya's secondary fire.

D.Va always gets designated as a middle line tank who supports Rein but really she is the swiss army knife of Overwatch. She can disrupt the enemies back line, as well as serve as a front line tank who outputs a lot of damage. She is also good at standing in the middle of your team to go where she is needed. She really needs more acknowledgement for what she really does.
