Overwatch: Hammond Main TANK! - Wrecking Ball Advanced Guide

Wrecking Ball aka Hammond is a hilariously fun tank hero to play but most players don't know how to play as him or play with him, this video explains. Playing Main Tank Hammond is about crowd controlling the enemy front line to let your team walk up or get angles towards their team without having a big shield in their way. Beyond that, Hammond allows for a super dive, and can draw out far more lethal cooldowns with a good adaptive shield than even a Winston bubble can withstand, so when you combine with frontline control, big engages that absorb key abilities AND key knockups with piledriver you make a ton of space for your team and effectively main tank Hamster. one tip i would add is killing enemy mines with your roll. as long as you are top speed you kill them without taking damage. this really opens up chokes for your team to get through.

You should add the ana botic cheese tip, ana can 1 shot your minefield in an instant and loses a short cooldown while took you a couple of minutes to farm the ult, any other form of dealing with it requires some form of sacrifice from the enemy team , be it directly walking in to it with tanks, using rein shield or spending your time hitting it. All ana has to do is press one button and it's instantly gone and she gets her ability back in an instant.

Rein has been borderline unplayable for basically all of 2018. I was a rein main and wrecking was the breaking point, quit the game for good.

A lot of main tank mains switch to off tanks or outright a different role. Blizzard sure as hell love CC and putting the controls out of the player's hands. Main tanks, in general, can and WILL be the hardest role to play because we're getting bounced, stuck, dragged, punched, booped, ect. DPS and healers have it easy since their roles are fun to play.

Main tanks are extremely powerful. Orisa and Rein both have the ability to carry many different types of fights and there are few DPS characters who can single-handedly turn the fight if a good tank strat is employed. A counter-tank tank, such as Hammond' with his CC, is good for the game.

Hammond, ironically enough, is the definition of a pure main tank in the traditional sense. Most classed based games that had tanks didn't have all of them with giant shields available at all times. a main tank (traditionally) is a class that can take a ton of damage and cooldowns, disrupt, and make space for their team with their large health pool. the fact that it's so hard to burst a Hammond down unless you have a ton of CC and he can use his movement to completely scatter the enemy team makes him 100% a main tank. MT is always about space creation, not shielding.

Then you have off tanks who support main tanks and Claim and protects the space the main tank made. It's not about taking dmg. Otherwise bunkrat would get ult every 30 seconds. Hammond clearly openes engagements.

In many games, the main tank is the one who initiates and takes all the big dmg. However in overwatch the main tank is the one protecting the back line and anchoring the team. By this latter definition Hammond most certainly is not a main tank in overwatch.

Pro tip, if your high in the air you can fire then pile drive so you can get some crit shots off the tanks and stuff. It works but it's kinda hard to pull off so you need to practice. But I'm a Hammond Main so you guys should try it. Fire down before you use pile drive while in the air.

Hmmm. I would say learning this technique 30 seconds into this video from Evil Toaster kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2Kxmo2ge9Oib6c That goes along with my second main tip that goes with yours which is be making sure youre getting quality ground pounds frequently when you have it available to pressure, CC, and bait out cooldowns from the enemy players. That and using your grapple inbetween ground pounds to re position and swing through the enemy team, kind of like stated in this video.

very situational since you lose about half your momentum when you leave ball and then with pile driver long start up simply getting them with the epicenter rather than stalling usually nets more damage.

I like the video, but I feel like there's a technique you didn't cover very well. You mentioned needing to be above jump height to use pile drive and you sort of grazed by the cheats you can do with it. But the much more effective method of pile drive is not to swing up to a ledge, it's to fall off a ledge and piledrive. As long as you're on a high ledge you can instantly piledrive when you fall off, and the forward momentum of piledrive will put you right back on the ledge. It works with any high ledge and if the ledge is too short, you can just jump off the ledge backwards, and piledrive forward. It also works really well on cart, just get to the top part of any cart, jump off and piledrive; be careful trying to do this against a Rein, he WILL constantly hammer you off the top part of a cart and you'll just waste time trying to get up there to pile drive.

This actually feels useful. Showing what not to do is every bit as important as showing what to do. Telling someone to go aggressive on rein in a brawl isnt anymore useful than saying don't charge them unless you are certain they will hit a wall before someone can stop you. Good stuff.

There's actually one quite easy way for Orisa to escape the minefield. Start moving to the edge of the field right away when you hear Ham pop the ult. Then, just for a second, do a little crabwalk so you can place your shield to eat as many mines from the center of the field to the edge to make a mine-free "corridor". Orisa can easily eat one mine for her trouble (and "hardening" herself helps mitigate some of the blast + prevents it from knocking you into any nearby mines the shield may have missed) and the shield should eat the bulk of them surrounding you anyways. Unfortunately this burns through your kit like hot knife through butter so it does make you want to disengage for a bit but tank still living is tank still doing their job. PS. this advice comes from a player sitting tightly in gold. I do not expect you to survive the field and ensuing onslaught in higher tiers as Orisa but works in gold where the bulk of the player base is located.

In ranks like gold let ur team do what they do and just try to set them up for good plays by doing ur job well. And if u got somewhat of the same rank friends who are somewhat decent play with them, it helps. Went on earlier for about 2 or 3 hours on my plat account to play with someone I met there who has been diamond in the past and I would like to play with him on my high diamond account to start climbing. So instead of picking my mains I play other heroes practising while we climb. Got him from 2750 sr to 2950 in that little bit of time, next time we get him to 3200 or so, u can't avoid losses but u can make sure u win enough to climb! Don't give up

14:00 in regards to doing piledriver onto a ledge. You can also use piledriver after walking off of a ledge, and if you get some momentum back toward the ledge, then you piledriver without leaving the ground (almost, but not quite). It works best with concave ledges.

Eh, it's pretty easy to kill Hammond as Widow. I have something like 60 hours on Widow, and characters that have no barrier tend to run away when I pop 1 or 2 shots into them, which means I'm doing my job right.

The cool thing about hammond is that he can close the distance between him and widow really fast. But a skilled widow can definitely outplay hammond 1v1. Unless hammond gets the drop on her.

I have to say your overwatch super solid guide. His mobility, disruption, and backline harass can break upon really intense comps. Added note, if you're near a cliff/ledge. You can jump off, 180 and slam because it checks your height when you're off the ledge. Use it to get a slam off without using your rope or being high up.

Not just to open the front-line so your teammates can enter in the fight easier than without you, but to go behind the enemy to kill or distract their healers such as Zenyatta, Ana (be careful with her). That's another way to ''open'' the front-line.

Great Hammond play. The worst part about playing him is that mistakes are super obvious. How do you recover from a swing through the choke to pass through the rein and get hidden behind them that just gets stuffed and loses your team the fight? Tell them to back out or poke for picks or try to follow up since enemy cool downs are used? Basically, how much should we expect our teams to work around us and how much should we as Hamsters work around our team?

After some hours of Hammond play, I have to say you really have to watch out for Symmetra's turrets. Its slow down you and interrupt your movement and get you stuck in the line of fire. And collision with enemies is also a big factor to consider with, as it will hinder you from speeding up at the beginning of hook charge.

As Orisa, you can shoot your barrier on top of Hammond mines to clear them. Doing so is a bit easier when actually up in the air though, and the natural instinct is to defense mode the pile driver.

Great vid. Love to see more about enemy comps he is weak against. Sure he can smack Rein around, but add Mei to the mix and he could have a hard time escaping. What other way can you think of to stop the hamster in his tracks? Orisa is actually a decent pick. Fortify prevents any CC, while a well placed Halt can help to focus him down.

Sombra. She can get a hack off before your piledriver lands and you are pretty much useless. Sym's turrets can be a real hassle as well because their damage can slow you down. Reaper also just does so much damage it is almost not worth diving on him.

Totally agree on the ultimate. It is much better for crowd control at critical times, both to protect the cargo and to quickly eliminate cargo defenders. Using it to block roads is a waste: only with the ultimate of Moira is it enough to break them all. Blocking roads does not usually earn much time for the team.

Has anyone noticed that Mei absolutely kicks hammonds arse? A slow hammond is a dead hammond. Mei does just that, slowing you down with the smallest freeze spray. It completely combats your dives sometimes. Sure you come in with the piledriver, but then frozen in the middle of the enemy comp? Your dead in seconds.

Playing non competitive as Hammond, I can really peel off attention from choke points just by heading straight to a cap point with a big move. People love focusing me down. If I communicate that at start and the team has the initiative to attack the choke after, I find on a lot of maps that the initial cap is very quick. I still suck at fine control of swings, though. :(

I agree with a lot of points in this video but there’s something really interesting that I found through playing him. I’ve had extreme success on solo tanking with him on KOTH in my mid-high plat area while the rest of my team play dps/supp. At one point my win % doing that was 88%, any reason why it worked so well on so many occasions? It also works pretty good on certain maps other than KOTH but mostly just on the KOTH maps

Another hammond tip to try and abuse is rolling off/ into slanted walls to piledrive so you can save the hook to escape

Do you think Hammond should have something like a headshot hit box in his ball mode? I feel like many Hammond players are way too far out of position and can always get away with silly plays. Winston needs great positioning so he can get impact but Hammond is way to lax on positioning while still getting that impact

I think the most interesting part of this video is realizing that we now have a main tank hero that does not have a shield. Maybe this could adapted to a rework of road hog in the future. Maybe roadhog gets a passive ability that reduces the amount of ult charge generated by shooting him?

Back line hammonding is more effective but riskier. It really depends on what kind of comp they're running and how much the enemy team peels for each other, if the right factors are in play you can absolutely dominate their backline.

When he has his shield up he doesn't get pushed around as much? That one has been requested for some time I remember. His charge ability have the option to cancel it like D.VA's thrusters and be more consistent with pinning/ pushing people away.
