Oh yeah! As a carpenter I needed to know how to build concrete forms, run wire, and install roofing. Eventually I learned to lay blocks, wire houses, weld gates and railings. I weld post and beam saddles now because the home depot kind were too flimsy. I found out being a carpenter, I could branch out to other trades easily because I'm there through out the entire process of the house build. I never went to school for carpentry but I've been one for 15 years and I did get a degree in welding recently through a small community college at night. You are an inspiration. Thank you for your knowledge.

I enjoy your videos. As a civil engineer it is fun to see the builder apply the "how to" to the equation. We get questions from contractors often along the lines of well just how were you thinking this or that would get constructed. Sometimes all we can say is the builder is the expert in means and methods. Our job is to address the project constraints for loads, configuration, environment etc.. but occasionally we aren't quite sure how something will be built until the contractor gets involved.

I used one of those tombstone welding machines for the first time about a year ago. A guy who I didn't know called me. My welder was in the shop at the time and that is what he had. It works ok and it can't be beat for the price.

A little welder tip when you put welding rods in your pocket put the uncoated side in your pocket. That way when you sweat the back side of the rod gets wet and not the starting end. Also if your a heavy sweater like I am by the time you get to the wet end of the rod it should be dry from the heat of the arc!

My first week working under the company owner, he took me to pick up some 20' lengths of 8" C-channel at the metal yard. I was so in awe of the giant peices being plasma cut that I was almost beaned by the 50 lb dumbbell hanging from the overhead crane chain. I learned to watch my head that day😁

Tidy welding. In Ireland we'd have to galvanise those and put an angled cap on to let the water run off or they would rot to bits. Arizona has its advantages!

Orbital Tube you're not supposed to weld on galvanized without special respirators. They'll be safe if the guys powder coat or enamel paint them. I would definitely add the angled cap though. Not having that added afterwards is liable to cause trash, bird nests, water, etc pile up on top.

I'm going to say it, and I think many would agree - at the end of the evening, your videos are much more enjoyable to watch than any movie theater movie. Pass the popcorn. But I'm also thinking - would there be any advantage to leave the top of the post open (for installation), and fill them (at least partially) with concrete -- much like a bollard?

Hope you accounted for wind load on the gate when you are opening and closing. If you have a gate opener the wind can over power it.

AC welder, well, you can get several good types of rods for that...many guys have done a LOT with these welders before having to move up to a DC welder... I'm waiting to see that gate...It must be HUGE...!

Howdy Mr. Scott Sir. It is good to see the Quick Trips are taking care of you out there. I had no idea they had spread so far our West. I am a Kansas City Native and we have had them for 30 plus years or so. I have enjoyed the journey you and Nate have taken us on over the past while. It feels like i am watching Home Movies when i see your videos. Both of my older brothers have worked construction and have built their own Houses over the years. I am not so apt when it comes to the finer points and remembering the local code so i just tinker in the garage. I get by with little home repairs and what not. Oh i almost forgot to say that i used to live out that way after i got out of the Marine Corps back in the mid 90's I would visit my friend down in Philomath and Corvallis Oregon. I was living in Portland at the time. I will follow up as some of the other comments have alluded to. Skookum as frig Would be appropriate i believe. I work for a shop that builds ski lifts, and I've lost count of the number of posts like this I've fabbed up. It's good that you had the metal supplier cut those for you- trying to get an even cut in the field is a real pain in the neck.

Two things I have found with respect to your bottom plate installed to keep the posts from sinking. I have found that making the bottom late wider than the post helps if there is any lift in the post to better hold to the concrete. Also adding a hole in the bottom plate can help drain out any water that might come later from a pin hole. Not a problem in Phoenix but can be a big deal where freezing temperatures are expected. I do both of these when installing metal corners on barbed wire fencing.

Looking forward to see how the hinges will be done, especially on those wires with the turnbuckles. I guess if the eye is exactly in line with the hinge it'll swivel fine but I haven't seen that before. I don't understand how the wires add more stability on top than if they were inside the area of the panel. Large gates like that are these days almost exclusively made to roll on tracks over here, partly to reduce the hazard in windy conditions and partly to save clearance space, so it'll be interesting to see, and also the latch.

As a fence installer ,I have 2 points.. #1 when you haul steel on a steel trailer, wrapping the strap around the posts at least 1 full turn (like you did) is very very important. When you turn and brake a strap over the top only,can be a disaster. #2 when using pre manufactured gates, the distance between, facing,and if the gate is connected to structure (like yours is) is a big deal.. 90% of gates that I install are freestanding, unconnected to a ridgid wall,so when the gate is 4ft wide... it is installed plumb,each foot after that gets set leaning away from the gate on a sliding scale ,due to fatigue/gravity ,(on gates really big they bubble is on the line away from the gate side) when the weight will pull the post down to plumb. The worst thing is a sagging gate,also one that is set to low for the asphalt/concrete driveway that may be installed later.. Scott you had an elevation plan to mitigate this,just a tip for someone that wants to make they're own. As always, great content!

Random late thought - Did you drill a diagonal, upwards hole anywhere in the posts? If they're sealed airtight, and black, sitting in the Mesa sun, they're going to be a bomb. If there's any pinhole below ground, it'll suck humidity in and rust out, or crack. Almost all steel structures have little purposeful holes drilled to allow for pressures to equalize in an area you want them to, versus in an area you don't. 1/4" steel, not sure if it's necessary, but, *shrugs*.

Very cool! What's with the two little offcuts that came along with the big tubes? Seems like they were already strapped to the tubes before they came off the rack when you bought them.

Bren Darrow they most likely had to buy the full 20+’ sticks and then the steelyard cut them to the size needed before storing them until pickup. Most steelyards/suppliers will give you the cutoffs or ‘drops’ since you paid for whatever they had to special order or transfer in to accommodate your project. My local supplier will sell those ‘drops’ by the lb to other customers if the original buyer chooses not to take them.

5:37 "...he gave it to his engineer, the engineer stamped it..." I'm an engineer, so forgive me if I'm a bit sensitive. I'm sure your design was perfectly suitable and professional, but no competent engineer will just take someone else's design and stamp it without thoroughly checking it first. The way you phrased it kind of minimized the engineer's responsibility and assumption of liability. Having said that, I really enjoy your channel and I really appreciate the way you recognize the roles of municipal inspectors and engineers in your projects.

You say that, but it really is affected by the distance from the border, illegals coming over will harass a lot of the people they pass, now the proximity to a big city is probably a more practical reason to focus on security, but the closeness to the border does matter.
