to grow one successfully here in the UK you will need a microclimate. Eg lee or south facing wall, near a heat source such as a heater vent. There are some growing down Portsmouth and London which has a microclimate due to being a city where there is heat loss radiated from buildings. Another winter requirement is to keep the crown dry , but air must flow freely around it otherwise you'll mildew in it

46FreddieMercury91 Long term that is true. But fun to grow in a pot for a few years and try outside and hope for mild winters.

My robusta in PNW USA I had since June coldest night so far we had was one morning 42 Fahrenheit low and 60 high rainy day and damaged most of the leaves

That's sad to hear. They are great at regrowing when the weather warms up. Much quicker than most palms providing temperatures don't drop too low

I have 3 filifera and it hates water. I live in NM, USA. Our temps drop to (-7°F) and gets significant damage.

Neil Bradley I now have the choice of leaving it in a pot and watching it grow very slowly or to plant it out and risk losing it.

I have one in a small pot that is actually 3 can I split them?
@YorkshireKRIS Жыл бұрын
It's really best to keep them together as they don't like a lot of root disturbance. You'll slow down the growth if you do split them
@TerryShewry Жыл бұрын
@@YorkshireKRIS okay I will leave them alone, thank you so much for the reply very much appreciated 👍

Did the washy group at the end of the video grow any bigger 11 years on ?

No they damaged easily even in mild winters outdoors. They do fine under shelter though

can you wrap a washy like a tree fern?
@YorkshireKRIS7 жыл бұрын
EYE-IN-THE-SKY PRODUCTIONS no washies need good ventilation, they really suffer when wrapped up
@YorkshireKRIS11 жыл бұрын
More cold tolerant yes, but not suitable for wet/cold/damp/long winters that we get in the UK. Robusta seems more capable of surviving these conditions in the UK.
@YorkshireKRIS11 жыл бұрын
filifera like lower humidity and should not be wrapped at all in winter in the UK where the Humidity will be really high all winter. It also needs more heat to grow well.
@khayelitshaissafe11 жыл бұрын
How about filifera?
@YorkshireKRIS11 жыл бұрын
Perhaps your right. The cross might have the best of both worlds.
