These type of Palms dont need that amount of water as they are mediterranean, and they are used to very dry, climates😉

They can handle water no problem. They do wonderful in Florida where it rains almost everyday.

They are from Baja Cali where they dont get too much rain, but they love water. but of course not too much, that will bring root rot

When planting a plant you need to water them a lotta whatever the plant is and Washingtonias often have roots in water in their natural habitat because they grow in valleys and canyons where it almost never rains but a lot of water is in the soil and there’s water tables and shit but if they didn’t need much water to grow there would be no desert just plenty of palms

Heavy watering gets the soil in direct contact with the roots which is vital when transplanting like this

I would've cut into the roots to make sure they aren't gonna twist around the trunk. I do that with all my trees (oaks) when I buy them in a pot. I feel like sneakin into this guys yard and cutting into those roots to make sure they aren't twisted and cutting off the trees lifeblood. i hope palms are more forgiving than oaks.

Hi Julia. IMPORTANT Palm tree roots, of all varieties are different to almost all other plants. (I think it's a monocotyledon vs dicotyledon thing). Some palms, Washingtonia and Sabal and some others especially HATES to have their roots cut back. Because of their entirely different root growing system, Palms will almost never strangle themselves like other plants and trees, such as oak trees, can do. Once they are well established, Washingtonia palms are quite drought tolerant (although not quite as drought tolerant as Phoenix dactylifera or Phoenix canariensis) . But newly planted palms, of all varieties, need good watering for the first season or year etc, until they have established their roots properly.

Okay, KiwiCath, good to know, I am totally new to palm tree planting, growing and care. I have 1 Needle palm, 1 Windmill palm (trachycarpus fortunei) and a bunch of sabal Minor babies, 1 is a Mc Curtain sabal minor, said to be hardier than the regular sabal Minors. I will be overwintering my Needle palm and Windmill palm in the ground with protective shelters and christmas lights this next winter. The Sabalsa will come in when it will get in the 20'sF overnight or in the day time. I will eventually move the Mc Curtain Sabal outdoors first in a year or 2. I am glad to know that the roots don't need untangled, but, I likely won't have tangled roots when i choose to plant them from the pot into the ground.
