Keala Settle performing the Oscar-nominated This is Me from The Greatest Showman. The Graham Norton Show. 9 Feb 2018. Lyrics below.
Guests include Saoirse Ronan, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and comedian Rob Beckett.
Lyrics:
I'm not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one will love you as you are
But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades
And reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become
Won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
Gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
...This is me
And I know that I deserve your love
There's nothing I'm not worthy of
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is bruised
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
I'm gonna send a flood
Gonna drown them out
(...this is me)

Autotune is a not a new and a recording tool all producers use for all artists. Everyone? EVERYONE! Adele, Sam Smith, Cher, EVERYONE! And it’s use is not about a performer’s talent but more about the album producer wants to make. It’s more than T-Pain mic and cannot create a voice (T-PAIN has an amazing voice!). A horrible voice will sound even more horrible with autotune. And with today’s technology producers will use it to tweak performers during live performances.

@@LadyPercy. That’s meant to be loud and all screaming because that’s what song is about: Realizing things, being able to express yourself, embracing freedom and shouting to the world that “this is who I meant to be, this is me!”. It’s full of emotions, and if you had watched some dramatic and emotional musicals, the tune, power/softness, everything goes with what the lyrics want to convey.

@@Fuji_0 I am an avid live and on film or recorded musical theatre fan. I just don't like this interpretation, yes I know the lady guest was actually in ' The Greatest Showman' movie but its just not my favorite. If anything having a choir and small orchestra somewhat spoils the cadence and intimacy of this self awareness and acceptance moment. I've personally seen, live, young and old amateur singers and two drag artists perform this song; and for me the mood was best captured with less overblown accompaniment. The stripped back minimalist instrumental without backing voices approach did match that self acceptance and self exposure moment that you allude to perfectly. But, at the end of the day, it's all down to personal choice.

I am 62 years old and my 15 year old granddaughter invited me to go to the show with her (which is flattering all on its own, how many 15 year olds want to be seen at the show with their Grandma) I fell in love with the movie. But when the song This is Me played, I was in tears by the time it ended. It captured every moment of doubt, insecurities, fears, and feelings of failure from the age of 12 to to now at the age of 62. Where I still don’t fit the expected role of Mother, Grandmother, and Wife of 43 years. I am still marching to my own drum and I am still getting bruised, but I am who I am and through the years I have learned to love and appreciate myself. This incredible song and her incredible delivery of it, combined with her obvious belief in the lyrics is a gift to the young people who don’t fit the “right mold”. My granddaughter has seen the movie 10 times now and has memorized the soundtrack from the movie. But this song has definitely become her personal anthem. She stands taller, holds her head higher and doesn’t let her sister and sisters friends bully her the way they did before she heard this song. With many thanks to the composers and most of all to the incredible woman who delivered this message of hope and belief to all of those who march on their own terms. Thank-you.

We played this at our daughter’s funeral service in June 2020. To a background of a photo montage depicting moments from her life. She overcame so many health and other difficulties as both a child and adult. Only to be cruelly cut down by bacterial meningitis aged 25. Having just found her feet at last with a great and loving partner and a new career as a teacher. It just seems to perfectly fit her life battles and the courageous way she overcame each of those. Brings a tear to my eyes in 2022 having just found this YT clip.

Ronnie Franklin Actually she can't and won't win because she's not even nominated. The Oscar for Best Original Song honors the songwriters not the singer, so even if the song won, the award would go to the two gentlemen who wrote the song, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (who also wrote City of Stars, the song that won last year), and not to Keala.

This is the anthem for every single human being who has ever felt marginalised, pushed aside, outcast. Me, your son and his friends...so many people. I just love how, despite all of the fame that she has experienced, she is still true to herself and is very humble. I have heard her tell the same story of how she didn't want to be noticed, to the part where Hugh discovered her, to the part the director bought the liquor in order for her to sing the song and make it hers... But I have never gotten bored of hearing that same tale. She's so inspiring! And if you noticed, she was still so nervous when singing the song in the beginning of the performance but when the chorus came, she finally went into full Keala Mode and sang the sh!t out of that song like she meant every single word of it. I have nothing but RESPECT for this truly extraordinary person.

I tried to end my life a few years ago, but I was not going to let my family win. I moved half way across the country, to be away from them and I also got myself the BEST little doggie too. As a person that was sexually and mentally abused, torn down. Even though I strongly absolutely believe in God He makes my life stronger through him. I still had that doubt in the back of my mind always and other people telling me I wasn't good enough that I'm not going to to be anything, I will never make it and I'm not good enough to be a mom or to keep anyone. The song and others it's just so strong in the lot of the way that it makes you feel. To be able to say I'm strong enough I'm worth it I'm worth being loved, respected to have a family. God has gotten me through a lot but music has been a strength as well and will always be a part of me as well. So thank you for the music and especially for the faith that makes us stronger to be able to believe in ourselves for ourselves.

After all I've been told by my mother growing up this song is slowly undoing her damage.

Everything about this performance was a triumph. From Keala herself, to the dancers, the choir (amazing), the instrumentalists (those drummers!), and the LIGHTING. So good!!!!

Being in the audience was just incredible... full-on standing ovation for at least a minute (they cut it out of the broadcast version) with everyone (including Keala) tearing up it was so emotional!

I'm actually jealous of Saoirse Ronan getting to see the live performance of the song twice, here & at the Oscars!
