Farrel isn't the kind of player to light up highlight reels, he's not Finn Russel. But he brings a lot to the game in terms of management, distribution, defence and usually good kicking.

An unremarkable but solid debut and good luck to Owen.

I’m not really sure how anyone can assess Owen Farrell or anything about the game from these highlights. It doesn’t show how close the game was and how close Racing were to winning . If one looks at the game stats the findings are quite interesting and clearly show why Lancaster wanted Farrell and what he offers Racing that they were missing last year. 1) Racing are now focused on attacking from their 22 entry which Lancaster sees as their best chance from scoring. Racing made 14 vs Castres 5. 2) To position for this meant Farrell’s territorial kicking was important and Racing won the territorial battle (55% vs 45%) combined with better lineout outcomes (93% vs 85%) Contrary to comments here Castre kicked more than Racing for lower net gain 3) In attack Racing made 136 passes vs 109 but significantly made 398 in past contact meters vs 240m . This means that Farrell was finding space for ball carriers . 4) One game in but 4 tries vs 3 , Racing looked better in attack than last year. So those were the positives however Castre won because they dominated Racing at the scrum win % 83% vs a poor 67% . Castre also dominated the restarts and most importantly the breakdown . Whilst Racing led on dominant tackles Castre led in offloads and creating turnovers. Overall the game could have gone either way. As for Farrell, I thought he played ok for his first game in Top 14. What was encouraging was that there is now direction in how Racing are attacking this year . I think Farrell with his distribution will pay dividends to Racing backs . The poor performance in the Racing scrum and the breakdown must definitely be of concern to the coaching staff

Love the irony that one of Englands best players has moved to France because people want him to play likes in The Barbarians week in week out. That nit what he does. He builds a platform for other players and kicks that same game, don’t like him? Stop watching him. Looks so much more relaxed. Good for him.

I hope he makes a go of it and gets back to playing at his best, but can't help feeling he's gone from the frying pan into the fire. If he thinks French media are going to go any easier on him if he plays poorly or French fans for that matter, I think he'll be in for a shock.

@@EnglishVeteranjust ignore him. Rugby content is full of idiots like him. Typically someone like him won’t have played the game to any decent standard, will only watch his own team play rugby in the international window and think that regurgitating a social media narrative of certain fans about a player is somehow factual. Tbh he does still need to learn that one has to use both arms to tackle and as a result is worth a few penalties and probably a card in favour of the opposing team

I appreciate it, thank you! 🙌 Henry Arundell is already on the channel, I’m just working on the thumbnail and will upload it within 30 minutes! And later, keep an eye out for Josua Tuisova! Plus, Kyle Sinckler and Lewis Ludlam debuts coming today 👀
Shocking isn’t it? He kicked the kick off! He kicked the penalty goal! He kicked the re-start! He even kicked out of his own 22! Never seen Marcus Smith or Pollard or McKenzie do any of that. As coach to Racing 92, you must be appalled at he went against the agreed game plan. What? Pardon? You’re not the coach? You’ve never been a professional coach? You never rated him anyway? The club coaches, the England coaches, even the BI Lions coaches have got it all wrong throughout the years and you have been right? Well, in that case, I will think carefully about the weight of your opinion. Right, done that. I can safely ignore you from now on

@@theofarmmanager267 I have an opinion as a long lasting rugby player to a reasonable level and supporter. I note he was a very limited international player who hardly ever opened the game to his centres. He would always kick to a certain depth for the opposition to then run at England. He certainly played a different game for Saracens, where the game is obviously slightly slower to give him more time. The funny thing is Starmer does not run rugby as yet, therefore others are still allowed to have different opinions, and even voice them, without being arrested and forced to spend 24 months locked in watching League. 🤪 Have a great season.
@theofarmmanager2674 ай бұрын
@@expressoevangelism80 every right to have an opinion. Every right to have that opinion challenged. I also played rugby for a long time; in my case exactly 40 years with my last game as first team tight head at 52. So, a lot of seasons and many overseas tours with an invitational club. However, I never thought I was a good coach and always believed, for whatever reason, that coaches like those at Saracens, England, BI Lions and now Racing 92 know better than I who are good players worthy of their sides. I’m not a supporter of any club now and so just watch for good, successful rugby. Have a good season yourself.
@expressoevangelism804 ай бұрын
@@theofarmmanager267 I think this is the core of the area of difference. Ask anyone what they thought of the beautiful Bah Bah’s v All Blacks match in the early 70’s, and everyone is in awe of that game. Compare that to many of the English games of that time, when we could best hope for Bob Hillier to kick the odd penalty, and hope that Dave Duckham might get a pass. I have the old fashion sort of romance for the game of rugby, when I like to see that ball thrown around, with dynamic players running great angles of attack. Still stupidly romantic that I like to be entertained when I watch a game. Especially if I travel up to Twickenham at great expense and inconvenience. My idea of a good match is not watching 9’s and 10’s kicking every hard fought for ball away to the opposition. As an ex back row player I liked thinking that we might be making progress rather than just see someone kicking the ball. I’m aware that as a front row player you see the game differently, whereas if you win a penalty, by doing something which no one else can see, then you’re doing a good job. There we have another area of seeing the game differently. All the best.
