I'm pretty sure, and forgive me if I am mistaken but vegetables got harvested before free movement of people. I have no recollection of farmers in Lincolnshire ( where I am from) planting crops and then not bothering to harvest them or saying there was no one t pick them. Please tell me if I am wrong.
@guydavies30355 жыл бұрын
Ian C you are not wrong. But it is irrelevant now. For decades many farmers have relied upon foreign labour to undertake manual seasonal work. If that pool of labour is cut off, then the crops will rot in the ground. There used to be a tradition of labour moving out of the cities to harvest hops in Kent (for example), it was a working holiday. Those traditions have long since gone. Farming will be damaged beyond recognition. Farmers will attempt to grow things that make money, as they always have done, but that will not be labour intensive crops, unlikely to be lamb, beef or diary if we lose the EU market, and only produce for the home market. I can’t see how many farmers could harvest wheat or barley and trade them at world prices. UK farming has been shaped by the EU and the Common Agricultural Policy, rightly or wrongly for decades and it would take decades to properly change that. My concern is that idiots like Gove will try to change this overnight, and I am sure we will see the suicide rate in the agricultural sector (already worryingly high) will soar.

Let me just preface this comment by saying I don't like Owen Jones and his general political stance and I feel very much the same about Nigel Farage. I voted for Brexit because I'm of the belief that the EU is a failed communist ideal that I want no part of. The issue of immigration isn't one based on racism but one of economic sustainability. If you keep letting people come into your house it doesn't take long before you can't cope and it becomes uncomfortable to live. Things like sleeping arrangements, washing and laundry, cooking and cleaning become difficult. Then when you can't sit down in your own house it's easy to blame the people who have come in. It is of course the fault of the people who let them in. The solution is either to move some people out or build an extension. The first seems simple but doesn't solve the problem. The second does solve the problem but takes vast amounts of time and money. This is only a temporary solution if you continue to let people in, you will need to build another extension. Put this problem on a national level and it's easy to see the problem isn't immigration it's the rate of immigration and it's the fault of the people who let them in. This is why we need to end FREE movement of people NOT movement of people. WE CANNOT DO THIS WHILE SIGNED UPTO ANY PART OF THE EU. Free movement of people will always be a part of any deal and it's not sustainable at it's current levels and will cause bad feeling. Free movement of people also puts huge strain on our infrastructure.

@Oh4Chrissake6 жыл бұрын
@ Hannah Tay 'Most people' means most people, whether they are educated or not. The economic outcome of Brexit is an immensely complicated issue; so much so, that different economists who have dedicated their lives to the subject have differing views. And that's just the economic impact. We then have the different (but related) _social_ implications. These, of course, are something the economists are perhaps no longer expert upon (with good reason) and therefore we perhaps have to look to a different set of experts for their forecasts on those. So how are these decisions _supposed_ to be made? By a *representative* democracy (as distinct from a *referendum* democracy). Politicians don't understand these issues any better than the rest of us. What they _do_ have though is ready access to a plethora of expert civil servants who advise them on the various subjects. We vote for people not because we have any confidence in their expertise in some particular issue. We vote for them because we assume (or hope) that they will take advice from experts on the best course of action _on our behalf._ If they don't, we vote them out again in four years time. I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person, but I certainly did not want to be given a vote on Brexit, (a) because I didn't know the first thing about it and (b) because I quickly realised that to understand it enough to make anything like an informed decision on it would take years and years of dedicated study.

Who's going to pick the vegetables? Change the UK unemployment culture. Unemployment benefit is a lifeline not a lifestyle. Offer the work instead of the dole. There are 1.4 million unemployed people in the UK. Give them the opportunity to support themselves and their families and regain their will to work and their self respect and for those who've never worked some experience of at least doing something more than just heading down to the dole office once a month. Make farmers offer a living wage for the work and set reasonable standards for supermarket produce that doesn't allow them to reject perfectly acceptable fruit and veg simply because it's not totally blemish free and of inconsistent size. In the past people would go to the country in different seasons and pick what's needed. It's not some ghastly throwback to a peasant life, it's work.

She went on about work ethics claiming the immigrates that come to this country do all the work, that there are more British people out of work and signing on, because it seems these people won't do the work the immigrants do, this is both insulting and degrading to all those people signing on, who have spent many hours looking for work that does not appear to be out there, she also claims that mass immigration isn't happening, that the crime rates have gone up since the 2016 vote to leave took place. I conclude by saying to Anna Soubry one thing, get out there and take a long hard look at the real world, see the problems for yourself instead of sitting in your little bubble of Fantasy and Fairy tales....

I’m not at all a fan of the Tory party but Anna’s take on immigration is spot on. The bit where she asks “where are the immigrants” is so true. I have friends from my hometown where (literally!) the numbers of immigrants are minute. I’m talking in the 100s. And some of them voted UKIP. She’s spot on that it’s people who live in areas with no immigration that hold the most xenophobic views

If we needed foreign workers, which we do not, why not use the tried and tested Gastarbeiter scheme utilised by the Germans in the 1970s when they still had some sense. No families, no settlement just single people on a contract. I think we know why do you ?

People like her, Fallon, Thornberry, Abbott... etc, etc. Need to be encouraged more and more. They are so utterly repellent that they will help bring on the big political change that is so needed.

Why is she having a dig at Labour, when it's her party, the tories who gave us the referendum. And stirred up this anti immigration, anti EU rhetoric, aided by the right wing media for yrs. And the then pm, Cameron who did a lousy job of persuading people to vote remain. And our tory government appear to have taken incompetence to a new level. Hypocrisy comes to mind

On the 29th of March in the following years British servicemen from all branches of the military and Merchant Navy gave their lives for this country, 1915 (102) 1916 (149) 1917 (411) and in 1918 (1102) In all 832005 British lives were sacrificed and because of them and the 453,408 killed in WW2 we can put a mark on a ballot paper and know it is binding . On the 29th of March that right and understanding is gone and only MP's votes count. The 29th should have been a tribute to these men and our democracy but Parliament is weak, spineless and are virtually spitting on the graves of these men, shame on all of them and god help us if we do nothing..

3.15 “have we lost this argument” “Nooo, you don’t give up” this sums up the sheer blindness to carry on regardless, I find this very sad. You have to accept when you have lost an argument and move on. If government accepted the referendum we would not be borderline civil war at the moment. I genuinely think there are sooo many upset people that as soon as government rubber stamp a stitch up we will see blood shed that has not been seen in a long time. Anna’s mentality of not accepting when your wrong is the most dangerous thing that exists within politics, the I know better than you when your a civil servant will never work!!!!

So Owen and Anna feel that they can't be outspoken about Brexit, but their conclusions are that Leavers were white working class - who, in Anna's words, 'don't know anybody.' Please, just have a little respect for people who disagree with your view! I'm frankly not surprised people don't want to hear their case when they're so dismissive of those that they disagree with. On another note, I do agree with Anna that a lot of Labour MPs do not represent they're constituents - or the country as a whole. The Labour Party used to smile when they saw the Tories with their infighting about Europe thanks to Tony Blair's purge of sceptics... We'll, you've got your comeuppance now Labour.

We all need more facts. The UK has reduced immigration from the EU but the work has to be done so the level of immigration has not changed. It is just that the people are coming from other places. Brexit has just caused problems. The government has been wasting time. Nothing has changed: we still have to comply with EU regulations to trade. We need the EU trade but on the outside, it is going to be much harder for the UK. The EU is not a backward, old-world place. We are part of a major, 21st century trading union of 500 million people and the people of Europe like us. Are we going to swap all the advantages of the EU for a promise from the Tax Haven brigade; well, maybe you know them personally and can trust them. Anna Soubry has gained my respect. As for booming Britain, businesses I've talked to are cutting staff and planning closure or relocation... to France.

It was a fatal mistake by David Cameron not to promote Anna Soubry to a HIGH PROFILE job in his Cabinet and let her spend the whole pre-Referendum year promoting Remain. She's one of the VERY VERY FEW Tories who understand and can CONNECT WITH real people. Likewise, Teresa May has also fatally underestimated the positives Anna Soubry could bring to the Brexit-facing Cabinet. Anna Soubry is utterly WASTED on the back benches!
