Influential left-wing commentator Owen Jones is in News Agents HQ a day after he quit the Labour Party - despite being a member since he was 15 - on account of what he perceived to be Keir Starmer's fundamental 'dishonesty'. We ask him why he thinks that, whether Labour have lost his vote forever, and if he wants to become the left-wing's Nigel Farage.

To be fair, and I say this as someone who is on the left, Owen Jones might be representative of half of the party membership (maybe, probably a bit less though.) But he's nowhere near representative of Labour voters, he's very much in a small minority in that respect.

If you're 58 there's only ever one Labour govt you've lived under as an adult which is New Labour, and they were in power at a very lucky time for a govt (until the financial crisis, of course). I'm not saying that to defend the Tories or attack Labour, but Labour in power after 97 were living in the boom times. The next Labour govt (similar to Labour back in the 1970s) might face much tougher times.

Not sure that’s quite what he’s saying. After all, where is the political gain? There isn’t really massive pro-Israel constituency amongst British voters. If anything, there would be more to gain politically by condemning Israel. Labour are trying to fall in line with the US. They clearly see something in that relationship. It’s a bit of risky strategy all the while Trump is lurking; but it’s a strategy all the same.

I don't necessarily disagree with the concerns Owen Jones raises about the current Labout party. But I most certainly feel a right of centre Labour party is hands down a better option than an extremely right leaning party Tory party. Unfortunately for us we have the choice between Labour and the Tories because of the flawed FPTP system we have. Labour infighting and people behaving like Owen just helps the Tories which in the long term damages the country far further than Labour being in power. His points are valid but unless we end up with a PR voting system he just ends up being a Tory enabler.

Agreed. There’s no vision in it. OJ has proven - to the disappointment of many on the more extreme left - that he’ll campaign for Labour even on a fairly moderate left of centre programme. In the short term, people like him leaving won’t impact Labour, but when things become difficult, the problems with Labour’s absolute lack of radicalism will lead to a terminal decline. The party should be broad enough to allow socialists to have a role, and the blasé attitude expressed here towards people like him leaving is so short sighted.

Dissappointing cut at 25:05. I would have liked to see that line of argument completed. It seems to me that the interviewer here was very keen not to have his own sense of objectivity/neutrality questioned, but if you're going to give an overtly political and heavily contested characterisation of events, then you open yourself up to contestation of it. It seems somewhat cowardly to give your own ideological characterisation of the conflict in a matter/of-fact tone, and then move on so that no counterargument can be presented (and cut out the counterarguments that were made from the upload). I get that as an interviewer you want to be above the fray and all that, but I think that's cheating

Journalists and politicians talking about Macroeconomics don’t know about Macroeconomics. The starting point is The Bank of England Q1 2014 Bulletin and knowledge that new money must be created. The mechanism is the argument. The starting point is not “there’s not enough money.” That deliberately closes the discussion. Money creation and what it’s used for are purely political choices.

The problem with Brexit has always been from the very start, how the Maastricht Treaty, and the rest of bureaucratic binds around the very idea of the EU, were WAY more complex than the "IN or OUT" that David "Greensill" Cameron had dumbed it down to, @@Mekchanoid ; so arrogant in his risking such a thing in order to remain party leader. There were prospective Labour policies back then, in favour of the regeneration of certain areas of the country, or certain sectors of the economy, which would anyway have fallen foul of EU regulations; so to try and compare Corbyn's dilemma of then against Gaza and Iraq is a bit of a stretch actually. I think his bigger weakness was/is his lack of political cunning, and what was perceived as naïveté on the Skripal affair. He would have needed a ruthless foreign secretary, who would be able to smell a trap or an ambush at a hundred yards. On domestic socioeconomic issues though, his sense of humanity and empathy was as sharp as that of his human rights stance in general.
