Israel 'Worse Than Apartheid': South African Jewish Former ANC Politician Andrew Feinstein

It's rare that I end an interview on the brink of tears, but this was such a powerful interview with former ANC MP Andrew Feinstein. He tells me his family history of surviving the Holocaust - unlike so many of his relatives - and how this informed his struggle against Apartheid.
But he tells me why Israel's oppression of the Palestinians is worse than Apartheid, why the anti-apartheid movement is an example to now follow, the silencing of pro-Palestinian voices, South Africa's case against Israel alleging genocide - and why history shows we have a responsibility to speak out.

Where is YOUR understanding here now? And where is YOUR compassion with 30.000 people killed in a few months, 40% children (who definitly were not responsible for 7th of oct). Stop defending genocide. Israel is not the greatest "victim" here. And yes, OP understood what the 7th would provoke and that it would mean immense suffering for civilians in Gaza, bc Israel has been rather clear in their capacity for cruelty for a long time (way before the 7th).

Another riveting interview. As a white South African who lived in South Africa during those awful, horrific years, it is a constant deep sadness for me that I wasn’t more active and more vocal during that time. I had no real platform except as a teacher, and I spent many years teaching both black and white high school students, trying to open minds and support individual struggles. It came to the point where my sense of helplessness overwhelmed me and I left. I’m back in South Africa now and every day I’m almost on my knees with gratitude that this beautiful country is where is it today. My support for Palestine is absolutely unconditional. Keep on keeping on Owen.

You understand any claims of apartheid could only ever possibly apply to Israel proper and not Gaza or West Bank, right? You can't have apartheid with an occupied territory. If that were the case, the Western occupation of Germany was also apartheid, so was Soviet occupation of Germany, so was German occupation of European countries, etc. Basically every single military occupation in history would be "apartheid". And then the word has no meaning anymore.

I was actually really surprised but so grateful that South Africa has recognised that what is happening to Palestinians is indeed apartheid and oppression. I saw a video today of a sniper having shot a baby and father in Gaza as they were walking, the father as dying puts his hands on his daughter who is already shot dead. I am just truly sickened by Israel 's brutality. What makes me feel better is that there is always an end for the opressers and Israel will see its end, humanity always wins over Evil. 😢

Even if there are differences in the apartheid spectrum no one can doubt clear cut persecution, dehumanisation and systematic destruction of human spirit in SA and Palestine. That practice had existed in occupied West Bank and Gaza way before October 8. Many human beings around the world are watching it from the lens of injustice and the western politicians are bent backwards to justify injustice exercised by Israel.

These interviews and reporting in general makes his channel one of the best here on this platform and I'm learning so much by listening to him. I really, really appreciate him and his work. To their points about Germany and the insane stance on Antisemitism. Here in Germany an MP from the social democrats literally said "Free Palestine is Antisemitic and "Anti Israel rhetoric" There are several MP's, politicians, ministers aso from all major political parties, who want to throw immigrants out of the country when they participate in protests against the current genocidal campaign in Gaza and for Palestinian human rights in general... It is actually insane, what is going on here!

Thank you! As a German who is just experiencing how the freedom of speech as guaranteed by our constitution has been restricted by the government and people are frightened to speak out, it is a relief to get thoughtful voices based on the principles of the general human rights. As of now everybody in Germany who gets a funding by the government has to sign an agreement to conform to the IHRA definition of antisemitism, meaning that basically every critique of the Israeli system is deemed antisemitic and will lead to the loss of fundings. The silence and opportunism of the cultural sector and media is the most shocking.

The only way to change that, is to fight the system. Perhaps it's easy for me to say as a South African. Perhaps it's in our blood to always stand up to bullies. Question for your German people: why are you so accepting of dictatorships? Let's face it, it's exactly what you've described and of course, we know your history. Is it not time to change this?
