Paul Rogers is Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies and one of the world's leading experts on war. This is a devastating interview which draws on what's happening on the ground and other precedents - like Iraq and Afghanistan - which exposes why Israel cannot win this.

How can a supporter of Azov that parrots Hasbara (like pretending that light arms that Hamas had were capable of melting people in their cars or doing structural damage to cement buildings) claim to be fighting pro-war voices when he parrots their nonsense continuously?

Owen, as an Israeli, I've really been enjoying all your videos related to this current "war". I'm probably one of the very few Israelis willing to listen to different perspectives on what's happening. Obviously everything here (in Israel) on the news is "We're winning, everything is going as planned", whereas non-Israeli media sources are actually showing the nuances. I'd love if you could interview more ex-IDF soldiers and peace activists to get a perspective that's really hard to find here. Thanks and continue your great work!

What really stood out to me was that it were mostly young women and they pulled the knife out at a distance while walking towards soldiers. I kinda see that more as an attempt to get shot/killed then a attempted murder. It takes a lot to reach the point where you are willing to just end it all I don't say it all have to do with the occupation, but living under occupation for sure doesn't help the situation.

You completely skip the issue at hand. Western Palestine, Gaza, was freed 18 years, ago when Israel withdrew. Hamas has been rocketing Israel ever since. Hamas is responsible for their own children's deaths. They educate their own kids to be suicide martyrs, they complain when Israel retaliates. Their mission is to kill. Ours is not. It is collateral damage. They proved themselves as indiscriminate animals on Oct 7. No other country in the world would hezitate to react as did Israel.

The colonel who is believed to have been killed Saturday week in one of the ambushes is said to be Col Shalom Hagari, brother of IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari. It was in an Arabic-language broadcast but I haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere. It may be a coincidence that Daniel Hagari seems to have been replaced by another spokesman (a Brit with a Scottish accent) the following day. Losses are hitting close to the war cabinet. War cabinet member and ex chief of staff Gen Gadi Eisenkot lost his son last week and his nephew a day later. It’s not been plain sailing on the Israeli side and now killing three of their own hostages…

Hamas' 7/10 attack reflects Algeria's 01/11/1954 attack on the french which, after hundreds of thousands of algerians killed, brought international attention to the colonization in addition to the defeat of french forces in the guerrilla battles. As the French retaliation got more brutal, more and more Algerians started turning against the french government and the FLN got more support. As the years passed, even the french public turned against the colonization. All this lead to the eventual inevitable end of a 132 years long occupation and genocide. Also like the hamas attack, the Algerian attack happened in a french holiday. There are many similarities which point to the inevitable end of occupation of Palestine, unless of course, the US chooses to follow israel's WW3 path. Edit: some said that the difference is the FLN attack didn't happen within frances borders. Wrong, there was no Algeria at the time because Algerian land got completely annexed by france and became france proper. So yes, the FLN attack happened within france and was widely labeled as a "terrorist" attack. Hmm, familiar.

That’s an interesting observation. I hadn’t thought of that. I guess one of the differences in this situation was that they crossed the border, whereas the battle of Algiers and subsequent battles took place within the borders of Algeria. Perhaps that seems like a small detail but I think from a symbolic perspective, especially vis-à-vis an world w is largely ignorant of the history of this region, Or am I just talking about people in the US. I pray that you are correct. But from what I can see this is a different situation entirely. They’re leveling the place and there will be nowhere to return to. It might not even be livable for the captors. Pure insanity

One big difference: the French living in Algeria (the so-called pieds noirs) had somewhere to go - the metropole, France. Israelis who have known no other country, whose parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents were born there have nowhere to go, therefore they will fight to the bitter end - and, don’t forget, they have nuclear weapons.

Really?. Netanyahu is likely to be finished after this if not end up in jail. I think there’s this hidden mindset that the Palestinians are far too unsophisticated to pull off something like this. If you put the atrocity aside, October 7th was a highly successful military operation. Even the IDF stated as much as have dozens of western military analysts. At some point the west is going to have to wake up and realise that the rest of the world is capable too
