When NYT readers responded to this article in letters to the editor, at least half of the letter-writers justified the indiscriminate bombing of civilians as Israeli self-defense or ‘this what Hamas gets for starting the war on October 7th. I wanted to write a letter, but refrained because it would have been too inflammatory for the NYT to print. In my letter, I wanted to suggest that the leaders of the present administration (as well as editors of the Times) have the experience of cradling dead infants whose bodies have stiffened because of exposure to the cold in the tent cities in Gaza. It seems to me that the back and forth of language and position-taking is too far removed from the actual experience of the Palestinians. Holding the shrouded corpse of a baby perhaps would change that person’s mind.
