I live in Leeds and met Mothin Ali at a Green Fair last week. He was there with his wife and we had a long chat about his involvement with permaculture, and his commitment to and enthusiasm for his community in Harehills (an area I've previously also lived in). I was left very impressed by him and felt enormously heartened that Harehills has such a great representative. His actions last night are a further testament to what was already obvious to me - he's a genuine, warm-hearted and committed human being, trying to make the world a better place. Thanks for the interview Owen.

If the police can't help social services enforce the law of the land then ..... then what is the point of any law, what is the point of social services? Who protects the child? Why did the police feel the need to bring protection? Thing is, social services are given a LOT of training on what to do in situations like this. Calling in a small army of police at the slightest hint of disagreement rather than escalating it via the courts etc is why this happened. Of course, we can't know exactly what the decision making process was, just that some basic stipulations were not followed by someone and it caused it to all escalate uncontrollably.
@johntate6537Ай бұрын
Nobody in the video was having a go at social services or the police. Mothin actually talked about the police having things under control. He was putting his body on the line to protect the police and demonstrators from each other. And he's been liaising with the police and the local community since. The issue here is of a neglected area going up in flames out of pent up frustration. The gap between rich and poor in this country is out of control, but all attempts at building some kind of alternative - left-wing activism, trade unionism, various campaigns over social and ecological issues, etc., etc. are ritually attacked in the mainstream media and by mainstream politicians with activists, communities and just ordinary people going about their lives who don't fit the prescribed mould being belittled and demonised. The mindset that the appropriate reaction to people's increasing (and justified) frustration is to just keep dialling up the repressive powers of the state is part of the problem. Maybe learn to listen to what people are actually saying and see communities that are not your own not as aliens to be forcibly controlled but as fellow human beings deserving of understand, respect and support.

Same. I understand that Mothin calmed tension when violence erupted? Possibly the man shouting for peace in front of the rioters? I do not understand why Jones insists on inserting race in what appears to be a non-racial incident. It appears to negatively taint whatever positivity Mothin might have been attempting to bring.
@ollie6133Ай бұрын
@@shirairyu9806 Presumably because the mainstream media frame the incident in such a way that suggests its racial. It helps to fight back against that by representing the ethnic groups involved, and showing that they aren't in for anything else other than the community. It helps deflate the usual divisive nonsense.

So what explains bus set on fire and police car overturned?
@doodle1983Ай бұрын
Let's be honest here Owen as usual brings deflection away from abominable behaviour and mentions "far right" several times despite this being distruction and anarchy by everyone except the far right. Owen can't bring himself to condemn the actions of people, who didn’t look angry to me but actually looked like they were having a great time, destroying their own neighbourhood, despite saying its not fit for habitation before the mayhem brought upon it. Lastly i will excuse the mp for his "community coming together " nonsense as he's not exactly mensa material but I'd not want to be within a hundred miles of a community which came together to roll police cars and played who can set the bus on fire with absolute apathy on their faces not "anger", this looked to me like boredom was the cause. I genuinely wish mothin all the best as he starts out on his journey to civilise his community.

Jones , straw manned the discussion from the very start As usual criminal behaviour from people who had no business getting involved is then blamed on social deprivation, racism, Islamophobia and of course the Far Right.Anybody with one ounce of common sense can see that this incident didn't need to happen.There was no provocation just social workers doing their job with , presumably, facts completely unknown to the mob , that ensued.Ali didn't renounce the violence he just started to use the default excuses of the Left I admire his courage when spouting the blatant nonsense he spoke with a straight face.
