I try to tackle the most technical mountain bike trail I ever rode on the King Song S18!
Episode 67- S18 Off road riding progression! I have been riding the trails at Forest Park for the past few weeks and getting a bit confident of my own off-road abilities. What better way to shake things up a bit by getting out of my own comfort zone and try the park with the toughest reputation in the area, Sprain Ridge Park? Would I have the guts the ride the tougher challenges or will I fall flat on my face?

Roger Underhill thank you! That is actually super helpful! I think I may have set the pressure a bit too low in my video. I’ll have to play with it a bit more! Unfortunately I pop the tube on my s18 so I’ll have to fix it first before I can get back on that wheel!

@OWGAC

I don’t have another one to compare with, the shock usually compress about 1” just from me stepping on it, I always assume its normal this way? It felt normal and I am able to “bounce” on it. If anything the pressure is probably on the high side, I drop it to 170/60 and have been liking it so far.

The volume shocks in the sound of your voice, when talking while riding the S18, sound like you are still being pounded by undampened road bumps. But I could be very much mistaken.
@redfoxdude
@redfoxdude 3 жыл бұрын
It does look quite compressed. The top shock mount just barely sticks out on mine when I'm riding on smooth roads (I think... 30-40% sag?), and it compresses near where Hsiang has it when I hop a curb for example. Not a lot of room to take bumps if it's sagging a lot (but plenty for dips), but hey, you like the way it rides.

Great Video!! I just took my S18 to nearby mountain biking trails and it was a blast. Took a few falls similar to yours. I was fully geared up so that helps a lot. I was amazed at how steep it would climb. After 2 weeks of ownership I am more interested and excited about riding the S18 then I am my 150mm travel 29er mountain bike, which was 2x as expensive. As a new EUC owner I get what you are saying about the wheel not being as powerful as some other wheels, but that is true of any form of motorized vehicle. I do not find the S18 is power limited for off road riding, limitations are my skill and the suspension design and travel. I expect that like mountain bikes we will see more EUC suspension designs that allow more wheel travel, and gyro based control systems that account for suspension movement. Lots of opportunity in this new market!

We are just scratching the possibilities of what can be done with an EUC! I am sure someone more skilled than I can pull off even more amazing rides, but it is certainly fun to try!

I love off roading more than street riding as well. I just took the V11 off road through some pretty fun bike trails and it was amazing. Several obstacles like the ones you were faced with, the V11 and I were able to conquer. I think that might be my next video. By the way the pedal height made a huge different. The sherman could not keep up with me at all.

It looks like you have difficulty setting up suspension on this one too, after the V11 sending you up in the sky. It shows that on the first suspension wheel gen, setup is really not as easy as it should. And then maintenance is needed to compensate for pressure loss, it's just complicated. I like the idea of automatic suspension adjustment with a compressor built-in as Denis Hagov was suggesting in his review. It would be so much better, with a few presets like street and off-road. Regarding tire pressure for off-road: go as low as you can without banging the rim :)

I haven’t had the chance to look, but I do believe there are shock you can get that does that. Probably a good idea to upgrade if you ride off road regularly

Put 20-22 psi on tyre, 200-100 on suspension based on 70-75kg rider (when you put off the pump it looses to 180-80 that is what you want) and use 15click. Don't forget to put the feet inside the jumping pad and bunny hop on woods, take them in front of the wheel and enjoy the s18 potential :D

Calculating the right shock pressure for the S18 would include rider, EUC weight and the leverage from the suspension design. The S18 is 55 lb. If we assume the motor, wheel and frame is 20 lb then there is 35lb for the the rest of the EUC (case, batteries, etc.). For a weight of 255 lb the shock mfr DNM suggested uc 250PSI/50PSI but that was too high, leaving 1.3 cm of travel untouched

Practice makes perfect.. thanks to share your learning experience with us... I feel on EUC it is different to most things off-road it is almost like you have to try to take the high line going over things rather than around to avoid pedal clip... getting over logs is a mixture of finding a high point to take it on and being dynamic in the legs and making a jump/bonk at the right moment.. this definitely takes practice if you can find a few logs lying around in a flat open area... At one point I saw some fallen trees and I was thinking yes he is going to ride the fallen tree trunks...
@OWGAC
@OWGAC 3 жыл бұрын
Yes very much so! Its such a niche thing that I feel like no one really know how to do this just yet, and most of the off-road videos I seen are mostly higher speed rides through more straight forward tracks, but I like these technical slower trails, and yes I have been practicing riding up past logs but still terrible at it. I am not very good with jumping also.

at 11:00, mtbikers call it a "roller" - that one is about 15 feet high with a >60 degree slope plus a lip midway down. There are bigger, gnarlier ones in that park. Tho, trail wardens won't be happy seeing an EUC in there. Ride safely and just be courteous to other trail users.

@@OWGAC Again, just be cautious. Current trail advocacy in that area is not PEV-friendly even to pedal assist. Local trail wardens/riders are protective of the work they put in to maintain the trails and not familiar yet with EUCs. If anything, set your shock rebound a bit slower and about 30% sag. Low tire pressure def offers the best grip on techy roots/rocks. I ride at 14-16 psi w/ stans sealant on my trail bike. Pick good lines and not deal with flat tires. I can only imagine getting an EUC flat in the woods. Also, hard to get help if you get injured. That said, I once fooled around w/ my mten3 out there after a bike ride but just took it up slow on the fire roads.

Brave try, but that trail looked to be a bit of a black run and I don't think it showed off the S18's suspension advantage. Some trails just aren't suitable for EUCs! Probably something where you could get up a bit of speed and could try jumping might have been better. But at least you had fun!

Well I am totally bias, and EUC is harder to learn, but if you enjoy a challenge, then it is also more interesting than the Matis.

need a bit more pressure in that suspension no? you had like barely any room for it to compress.
@RaidenPhotos
@RaidenPhotos 3 жыл бұрын
can hear it in your voice while you talk down the trail. Other people ive watched with more pressure and suspension travel can talk on the trail and you dont hear their voice rattling until they are cooking it at close to top speeds.

You need some pads to help you jump over many of these obstacles. Just keep doing trails and you will great in no time since you are already an experienced rider.

Hsiang did you feel like the lack of a handle on the S18 was an issue? I guess what I'm asking is, do you think you would have dropped the wheel as much if the handle was accessible? Also don't feel bad about getting roasted in the comments. Video never accurately depicts how difficult terrain is lmao
@OWGAC
@OWGAC 3 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t particularly concern about dropping the wheel, its taken a beating pretty well so I wasn’t trying to hard to hold it up. So I don’t think a handle would have made a difference, just more bits to break off! And Oh I don’t mind people giving me a hard time!

Entertaining video, as you always do, however, looks like (and others have mentioned it too), you really should set up these suspension wheels to actually work before filming videos which should be showcasing the wheel's suspension capabilities, rather than not. Looks very clear that you have not properly tuned the suspension on this, nor the V11 you crashed on...gotta dial those, otherwise you're getting zero benefit from the suspension systems...🤷‍♂️
@OWGAC
@OWGAC 3 жыл бұрын
Will do!! I did think I had the pressure set 40psi too low but I’ll play with it some more and bring a pump next time so I can dial it while I am on the trail!
