Eccezionale !!!!!!!!!!!

Around year 1980 I wrote a letter (hand writing ) to Leo in Minneapolis asking him to tell me how to play Owls, and he responded to me (!) he could not remember how he played it…. I still remind the colored envelope with a small pink pig drawn in the back.. and his hand written signature Leo

Very clean and nicely done, as usual! You do such an excellent job of playing his tunes. Podunavac really made some big sounding guitars. I used to play Leo's but it felt like a Cadillac and my little hands were only good for a VW! It really made me appreciate just how strong his fingers were.
@andrewlardner7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Bill. Leo once told me a personal story about Bozo that made me appreciate his artistry, I believe he overcame a lot in his life as many of our ancestors did. I'm curious to know more about the Bozo you reference. I believe he still has the Bozo he played in the live footage but don't know what became of the fancier one. The guitar I'm playing here spent a day with Leo once.
@wchphoto7 жыл бұрын
Was that the story about being allergic to sawdust? At one point, Leo had me take his guitars home (3 of them) so he'd have less to worry about. It was a handful but it meant I could play them at any time. The Bozo had a tremendous sound, much as your video here, with a huge bass and octave strings that really rang out. In the 3 years I worked for him, it was the Bozo, the Martin 12 cutaway (repaired by Lundberg) and various 6 string Gibsons (?). This was before he discovered Taylor guitars. I just did a search for any mention of Leo's good-ol-days guitars and found this 1982 mention of "Blue Dot" (in response to a question about writing). Because he mentions my name, it kinda ties Leo, you and me together since I finally learned that darn piece from your video!
@andrewlardner7 жыл бұрын
Funny connection. I recently came across the only other recording of Blue Dot I've ever heard besides MFAS. Unfortunately he starts playing and stops saying he can't play it on the guitar he's borrowing.

Owls is tricky, to get the first bit up to tempo, play as sweet as Leo does in the middle section, then get back on the original tempo. Big piece to pull in terms of performance

Awesome as usual! Would love to see more Kottke covers! Also when you're playing Kottke stuff on the 12 string what gauge strings do you use??
@andrewlardner7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the guitar, anywhere from low tension light to medium. The Bozos are really well built and can handle higher tension, many of the early B45 gibsons didn't hold up to tension over the years so they get much lighter strings.

Sorry I did not see this comment earlier Donato. Send me a message if you are ever in my part of the United States. Bozos, while still very rare instruments, are much easier to find in the US than they would be in Europe I am sure.
