Cupellation - from cupel to SILVER bead

DIY fire assay - refining without acids
Silver cupellation - the full process. Cupel is made from dry portland cement . Silver contacts are then smelted with lead and refined employing the cupellation process. The lead in the form of litharge and the others base metals oxides are absorbed by the cupel, leaving the pure silver button behind.

Would this process also separate silver from gold? The latter in "nobler" than silver but maybe it would take too long to oxidize the silver ?

no, you can't separate gold from silver or silver from platinum or palladium using cupellation, what you can do is separation of noble from base metals

Why is the lead added? It seems counterintuitive to add contaminants in order to refine the silver.

Why you put soap on your hands when washing them? Water washes away the soap together with the oils it’s has dissolved. Think of the lead (lead oxide to be precise) as soap

Usually contacts from relays, contactors, etc are Ag+Pd for hardness 1-5% Pd which tend to stay in Ag as is also noble but increase melting point of Ag...

I know its an old video but hope you can advise me. I use lead cupellation to cupel e-waste alloy that most of it Copper, once I use oxidizing flame the copper oxidized very quickly, is it practical to just use reducing flame for hours to oxidize lead? Is cupellation using propane flame must be reducing flame? Thanks for your help

Did you say it would work with all kinds of breaker contacts? I have some that are silver tungsten carbide. I was told that the tungsten carbide had a melting point of 6,000F degrees. If it's true will you lose any silver heating it to that temperature and how would you get it that hot? Thanks

Its very difficult but it does work, and you don't have to heat it to 6000F

Anyway I read that the tungsten carbide contacts could be sold for reuse but I don’t recall the reply saying who would by them, I have a few pounds of them. That was a great video. You don't get a lot of fumes. The lead forms lead oxide which slides down the bead and is absorbed by the cupel. With nitric acid, you generate a lot of nitric oxide fumes - also very toxic.

Да понять та можно😀вот в этом процесе смысла нет совсем.Как тигелёк использовать для выпариванья сплава после купиляции свинцом это да,вариант...что бы тигельки не покупать,хотя они дешовые.Это когда с рудами,шлихами мутят и свинец как купелятор и растворитель золота,серебро до 20% поглощает,не катит кароче если когда с щолочами и до 700 градусов.😀Я автора очень уважаю,люблю смотреть,но в этом смысла не вижу.Медь,никель,хром и прочее что есть лигирующие в сплаве будет и никак не очистит этот метод,хоть кислородом продувай сам сплав часами,медь останится.Да и чистить эти сплавы свинцовые жопа,долго и нудно,всё в солях его или упаривать до апупения как автор показал.

Просто когда медь там есть нужно добавлят на 20 раза болше свинца. (1гр. Cu /20 гр. Pb) На конце купеляции остаются только ДМ

@@OwlTech333 с чего он медь вытолкнит от туда?Другие окислятся на воздухе и то не факт при такой плавке.Да это древний как мир способ😀м музеях манеты и изделия,сплавы хрен знает что.Да я этим мутю плавлю 3 года балуюсь,если спициальные флюсы сыпать при купиляции золота может как то почистится от примесей...те что силитра или другое убирёт.Свинец и серебро почистить не думаю😀золото,медь,железо,спутники свинца и прочие всё в серебре с таким методом,полно проб читал из наших мест...от добычи руд.Лаврио,Халькидики..на 1 кг серика до 2 гр рыжика и прочено куча

Можно сам попробувать: Сплавите вместе 1гр Ag ; 1гр. Cu ;22гр. Pb, потом сделайте как показал на ролике. На конце будет только шарик Ag, его вес 1гр.

Not if done right. I can prove it to you by fusing 1g Ag 99.99 % with 5g Pb and the resulting bead will be 1g Ag +/- 0.1%
