The Italian playboy owner of this vessel was converting it into a mega-yacht when he died of a heart-attack during a car race in Europe.
Ice-class US Research ship with diesel electric propulsion, 15,000 mile-range, can do over 20-knots. At 3,700+ Gross Tons, it offers enormous space for 18 luxury suites, a full spa, screening room, onboard film/TV/recording studio, full gym, submarine launch through moonpool, multiple twin-turbine helicopters, etc., etc.
The vessel features a UNIQUE BULBOUS BOW VIEWING POD. Lie back and watch the dolphins playing under way.
Full Rolls-Royce Marine engines/propulsion, bridge and power systems.
This vessel has been called, "The finest ship currently available for conversion in the world."

Watching this video about an ice-rated, former research vessel has my imagination working overtime. If money was no obstacle, this would be a fun and rewarding project for a conversion to a super yacht or even converted into another research vessel for a university or marine biology lab. When objects/vessels are well made, they should not be wasted or abandoned. A heavily built vessel gives it a remarkable degree of versatility and ability to go into harsher climates. I hope there is a follow-up story to this vessel and it’s not kept secret or ignored.

I sailed on her for about three years. She was top heavy and rolled like a pig in heavy weather. She would have been a nightmare as an ocean going yacht but would have made a great "never leave the dock" vessel which there is a market for. If she had been gutted and had the engines removed all of that space could have been used as passenger space. She would have made a perfect floating casino/restaurant/hotel but it's too late now, she's gone. She had a sister ship, the Discovery.

Equipment 1st; ppl 2nd; supplies for construction 3rd limiting factor time wise; 4th is medical++ level 2 or better min care; 5th make it nice so ppl enjoy on board living the end skeetch that & start work 3rd version that gets most of that list at best price & reasonable time line 1.5 yrs+/- 2yrs max reasonable range fine.

The reason for this is simple. The govt has plan repairs years in advance for funding to be approved, then contracting in place and scheduled it has to be completed by the contractors by law. (Congressional approval) once funding is in the pipeline it has to be spent. One of the reasons we will never have a balanced federal budget. ChiefD

It's incredible well built. Not sure if a super yacht can be pulled out of it though. My issue is with the "plus side" list, or rather the lack of the "minus side"? I've been boating for far too many years to believe there is none, and I'm far too old to not to notice it's lacking. Aside cost, I'm not saying they're show stoppers, I'm saying they're not being shared.
@ExpeditionYachts

I agree- there are pluses and minuses of any vessel. I could produce videos all day and night pointing out deficiencies of mega-yachts that have won every award that they give to each other every year. I'm focused on maritime opportunities that are sitting right in front of us. The object with a conversion is to retain the capabilities and as much of the existing structure and systems for re-purposing to fulfill a particular mission. In the end you want to get a vessel with capabilities that surpass a 'white boat' that costs many times more; or a new-build.

I used to own the tugboat delanco which I bought from gulf oil in Houston texas. She was built in 1919 and as of a year ago was still in the towing business. She was repowerd in 1953 with a V 12 567 EMD. 90 feet long. Theres a ex national guard 100 foot tug in bristol condition for sale in tacoma. They went down to 75 thousand and no buyers. Shes powered by a 1200 HP Fairbanks Morse. Cant understand why a wealthy person would buy a ranger fake tugboat for 5 times the price instead. The Sahara looks very much like a martinac tuna clipper. @@btwbrand Yeah, I heard that. They were asking 5 million for her at some point. It's so dumb to do that. Think of the millions of dollars that were wasted. The ship I served on was a subtender. At the end of the "cold war" she was sent to the breakers. She could have been converted into a hospital ship that could have aided in natural disasters. It also left the subs she served in a lurch. Subs have issues like any other ship or boat. Scotland was home to a tender. After it was scrapped and the site close, the nearest repair site was in the US. Can you imagine hitting a log with your screw and having to go all the way home making noise that anyone in the North Atlantic can hear?

I think these boats are way better and cheaper than what is being built now for 100M dollars. I think you could refit it for 10 to 15 million as a basic boat. His refit of 250M is way the hell off unless you want to fill it with carrera marble or crazy expensive wood. But I know people that do refit and would guess around 10 to 15 M its worth it as a charter at the end.

Who buys a finished refitted vessel like this?
@ExpeditionYachts
@ExpeditionYachts 8 жыл бұрын
+Fr. Duffy Fighting 69th Yes, a shrewd buyer who understands what a ship is. Who understands that these government ships, even an old ol like this, will outperform any Russian billionaire's yacht coming out of a German shipyard. This vessel hit 18-knots on its last sea trial with the original engines. With a bit of love, she'll do more than 20. And she'll hold that non-stop from Seattle to Hong Kong and have still hold enough fuel to turn around and steam home.

Seems to be a opportunity for a cut price megayacht. More a renovation job of an existing ship then an alternative to a custom build of a similar sized yacht. Whether the interior and exterior deck fittings would match the likes from Lurssen/Oceanco/Feadship/Blohm + Voss/Benetti ect is moot. It'd take a lot of work besides a new coat of paint on her hull to change her interior and hull fittings to make her not look like the ex-navy government ship she is. It'd make a fair exploration ship to the poles and off the beaten super and mega yachting track, but for Mediterranean cruising where the other super and mega yachts cruise I don't think it'd look the part.
@shananagans5
@shananagans5 10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to look the part of the mega yacht set. I rather like the government/commercial boat look. If I had the money I would prefer something like this with a nice home level interior over a Lurssen or Fedship. The high level yachts are just incredible, no doubt, but, could you imagine how much attention they would get pulling into port in a poor country? Even with good security I wouldn't feel safe. I would want something like this that would be safe in virtually any conditions, wouldn't attract unwanted attention & could explore remote areas for long periods of time. lol It's a moot point though. I don't have the money. My exploring will have to be limited to a tent & the far side of the lake. lol :)

Edward Grabow Seeing as the larger megayachts are mostly owned by billionaires who are in their forth and fifth decade, I doubt they would want to be seen on this ship either, as impressions seem to count in those circles, and this ship as fine as she is, and as sea faring as she is would look so out of place sailing into say Antibes and docking next to say Madam Gu, not to mention how she'd look sailing into Hercules Port, and then docking next to say Alfa Nero, Sahara would look so out of place. But then not being a ship man, what do I know. I just know that the yachts built by Lurssen/Oceanco/Feadship/Blohm + Voss/Benetti ect are geared for comfort for the people who can afford to run and maintain them and have jet set parties on them i.e Indian Princess and some look beautiful, and have lovely interiors.

Puzzoozoo This isn't a yacht for someone that wants to look pretty & impress their friends. This is for someone that isn't image conscience that wants to safely explore the world. It's the yacht version of the old pickup you take out & use without worrying about scratching it. If I had the money I would go for something like this before I would buy a fancy new yacht. This has a classic ship look which I love & I wouldn't worry about damaging it. Even if I had the money it would stress me out to see the crew hammering ice off of a shiny new yacht. It would stress me out to drag something off the bottom & possibly damage the deck. I am in no way knocking the Feadships of the world. They are truly impressive & very capable yachts but they just aren't my style. My dream is to have a yacht to explore the world & relax. You can have a very comfortable interior built & comfortable deck spaces built on this & be every bit as comfortable as any Lursson or Fedship without the flashy exterior. With this, or something like it you could pull into any port in the world without attracting attention. People just assume you are a commercial ship. If you pull into in a poor area you could safely get off & walk around. If you pulled into a poor area in an obviously privately owned $80 million yacht that could be dangerous for your crew & your family. I guess it just depends on what someone wants a yacht for. I have no desire to impress people & if I had the $ to buy something like this I figure I would not want to let people know I was that wealthy. Others want to impress. It may even be beneficial for business contacts. When you really look there are lots of converted commercial ships so I assume I am not alone in my desire to have a yacht that doesn't attract attention.

If I can't get all that less ppl say 30 is lowest poss construction work crew. Medical 4 min, & engine & machine crew 4,+ whose has to run the ship normal crewing min. Short of that size it is waste of ful to drive some where, bc no man power. If once there u hve on shore living trailers in a box, that is fine too, so if working at elevation u just place store living box on top of cliff, 1k up & down every day is a drag if not flying.

Buy the ship for good price,like the scrap tonnage worth,move it to China in condition it is and for 80 M$ you may have a Exquisite not a yacht but a ship.But if you refit it in Seattle than this guy say you will need 200 M.Watch out it will cost you actually or more likely 600 M , and the craftsmanship is poor, take it to China and you will be very happy you did. TH

Have you refit ships in China and/or Seattle...? China has had a number of disasters. There are some good yards, but I am told by project managers that it is very tricky - NERO being the prime example. Seattle has many accomplished, hard-working craftsmen who have done credible commercial and yacht projects for decent prices. You get what you pay for. This vessel will never be a new Lurssen, but it represents the best platform available for conversion anywhere. And a smart re-fit will create lasting asset value.

You weren't listening very well, he said it originally cost the Govt. $200 million to build this ship, not $200 million to refit it, as for China they are notorious for cutting corners & using sub-standard materials, unless you have a well known & reputable project manager I would have the work done in the U.S. for a ship of this size.
