"Hats off to you Owney, even though you killed a man..." I found this way funnier than I should. Owney killed a man in Reno just to watch him die! Thanks for this, Jacob.

I’m 12 and in 3rd grade I learned about owney and I read something that said postal men brought owney on their trains because they thought of him as good luck when in the late 1800 s and there were trains that always fell of bridges and in general, but when owney was on a train it never fell.

It wasn't as bad as all that; it's not like they boxed him up and shipped him around. He was a mascot, and was doted on by the postal employees. Most of his travel time was spent on board trains or mail delivery wagons, where like any dog he hung out and enjoyed the sights and smells of travel with one or more human companions. He genuinely seemed to enjoy his time with the postal service, and while he ran off to do "dog things" occasionally he usually returned on his own accord. For the time (attitudes about pets were very different in the 1800s than they are today) he lived a pretty comfortable life and never lacked for food and affection. His "execution", ordered by the postmaster in Chicago, became symbolic of conflicts between employees and management in the postal service, as the local employees were outraged at this callous abuse of their beloved mascot. The employees insisted on sending his body to a taxidermist, and while they couched it as an honor in the press, when they sent his stuffed body back to DC it was a clear and cynical protest of disassociated and uncaring upper management. This little furry guy became a not insignificant part of the early labor movement.
@daveturner860
@daveturner860 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah...I'm sure he loved it. (sarcasm) Why don't you ask them to mail you all over the country and see how much you'd like it. At first it would be great but it would get old very quick. Eventually you'd beg them to stop.. Today this would be called animal cruelty.

You must have missed the part where he explained the body is preserved on it's own as part of being considered for sainthood. Not quite the same as doing the exact opposite lol. There are more but on display in museum at least a pair of shoes and and book bound in tanned human skin. That could be considered the ghoulish he spoke of.

fucking sickening that people do this to animals. just let the poor thing rest in piece and give it proper burial. sure you can still tell his story to others i mean you got the damn badges and a statue of him. but seriously leaving a dead dog on display for others to see forever is just cruel. makes me wish and pray someone smashes that glass apart, steal him and give him the justice he deserves.

The dog Owney in todays world a weighted chain is considered by MSPCA and ASPCA to be in humaine. The dog probably had pain spots from all the sharp pointed tags , or could not go to bed because they hurt when he laid down, or the newspaper photographer was mean to dog or his camera was thought to be something to harm dog with who turned and defended himself and Owney was shot to death - it is a very sad end to the postal dog. Who fed the dog ? Maybe the reason people thought he was good luck for mail was because he defended mail car from people illegally boarding train ? May be something was in mail like his bone and he followed it and defended it ? He may even ghad gone the oposite way in that possibly Owney thought the news paper photographer was going to take the tags off him and liked wearing the dog coat under them with them over the top as he had and bit him becuase of that. He may have been fine with postal service uniformed workers and not news paper photographers or trespassers or theives he defended the freight cars. === The tags was the post office mailing him from one place to the next - he was the most travelled dog in world the only dog to circumvent navigate the world. ~~~~~~ * * Maybe the postal train crews fed him when onboard. Maybe mailing him around was a away of giving him a home and feeding him on Uncle Sam as a humanitarian act to egive him a home and keep him alive - as if it was a good thing for him ?
