The Boston Terrier is a cute, small and compact dog breed. Known as “The American Gentleman”, The Boston Terrier is a classic American dog breed that was accepted into the AKC in 1893 into the non-sporting group. This is one of the few dog breeds that originated in the United States.
So, what breeds made up the Boston Terrier?
The Story of the first generations of Boston Terriers is that they were a Mix of bulldog terriers and the English bulldog that created the cute tuxedo looking small bulldogs. Their body type is strong, compact, and well proportioned. Their heads are square and rather flat on top. They also have a short square muzzle. They are known for their large round appealing eyes that look like a baby. The ears generally stand small and erect like ‘bat” ears. They are born with genetically short or corkscrewed tails. They have a short and smooth haircoat that needs minimal grooming and care. Simple baths to keep them clean is all they need.
Boston Terriers have a good amount of energy and excel at agility. They are a quiet dog breed that normally doesn’t bark too much. They love giving kisses and super affectionate. They are very family friendly and normally always friendly with strangers, other dogs and are good with cats! I highly recommend this dog to anyone looking for a nice family dog.
Boston terriers technically have 3 weight categories with their range being 10 to 25 pounds.
The life span of a Boston Terrier is between 11 and 13 years old. Although some of them of course can live longer.
A famous Boston terrier I want to mention is Sergeant Stuby who was assigned to the 26th Division in World War I. He served for 18 months and participated in 17 battles on the Western Front. He saved his troops from surprise mustard gas attacks and comforted the wounded. I would do an entire video about Sergeant Stubby but lets get back to the Boston Terrier Breed.
So The accepted AKC colors of the Boston Terrier are Brindle, Black, and Seal with White markings.
For Show Boston Terriers the Required Markings are a White muzzle band, even white blaze between the eyes and over the head, white collar, white fore chest, white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. There are many other colors of sweet Boston terriers such as: chocolate, liver or red, Blue or even solid colors, but these are not yet considered the classic show quality colors.
Since I am a veterinarian, I want to cover some of the common health issues associated with the Boston Terrier for you to look out for if you are getting one.
First is that they are a Brachycephalic dog breed meaning they have those smooshed in faces that can cause breathing issues, they can’t tolerate heat and they need special care at the vet if they are to undergo anesthesia.
Secondly, are their budging eyes predisposing them to having cherry eye, eye injuries, dry eye that can lead to corneal ulcers, and glaucoma due to bulging eyes blocking the tear draining system.
They are an allergic dog breed along with our boxer dogs, and frequently come to the vet for scratching, licking, and chewing at their paws. This can be managed with allergy pill, allergy injections, regular bathing and occasionally antibiotics and antihistamine pills.
Lastly, they are prone to spinal injuries, slipped discs or intervertebral disc disease and a common spinal abnormality in compacted bully breeds called hemivertebrae which is a congenital abnormality where the vertebrae are deformed in a wedge shape that causes compression and twisting of the spinal cord leaving them with nerve damage, urinary incontinence issues, paralysis and in pain. Some mild cases can be treated with pain medication and anti-inflammatories and rest while other may need a surgery done by a neurologist to fix the issues, called a hemilaminectomy.
Of course all breeds will have a laundry list of disease that they can get..
So please don’t let this deter you from getting a sweet Boston Terrier!!!
Thank you for watching this video and I hope you learned something new about the Boston Terrier!

My beautiful Boston lived to be almost 18 years old. We made sure she ate a very good quality diet, got her exercise (without over doing it) and received plenty of love and affection. It's been three years since she has been gone and there are no words to describe how deeply we miss her. Our sweet little girl.....

I have a family member who recently bred his male and female Boston Terrier, and I am getting a little gray and white female in about 2-weeks. I’ve only ever had chihuahuas and chihuahua mixes. Today, I have begun the process of puppy proofing and puppy preparing the living space. I haven’t had a puppy in my home in 13-years, and that was a teacup chihuahua. Wish me luck.

My wife and I have a Boston that we got when we lived in South Korea. They are very rare in that country but are becoming very popular. We moved back to the states in 2018, and she came with us flying from Seoul to San Francisco to Houston. She did very well on the flight and rode in a carrier in the cabin. She will be 11 years old in 5 days. Her name is Cookie because my Korean wife and a couple of her Korean friends thought that she looked like an Oreo cookie. She is sweet and slightly neurotic and we love her to death.

We are seniors who currently have our first Boston Terrier. He is almost 2. His first year of life he was an absolute beast with jumping and serious biting, to the point we thought we may have to re-home him. I was committed to making it work, so we invested in both group and private training along with a litany of toys to entertain and distract him. It was well worth the time, money and effort! He has become a wonderful companion. Some things that we found invaluable: *An easy walk harness for leash training. *A squirt bottle for correction and small treats for reward. *An outdoor tug toy to hang from a tree or pole in a fenced yard. *A yoga ball or peanut ball to chase around the fenced yard and tire themselves out.

I've had Boston terrier since I was 3 years old. My parents used to be AKC breeders of Boston terriers. They are the best breed ever. They will love you till the day I die. I recently lost my most recent Boston terrier, Ellie, after 13 years of current love. Even the day she died, she waited till she came home to work so she could die in my arms. I miss her every And hopefully we'll get another one soon. Because they bring so much joy to your heart. You won't ever wanna be without one go Boston. Terriers thank you for forty years of love

We've had our little guy for a little over 4 months now and he is one lovable dog. He does follow me everywhere inside the house but will wander a bit outside. The first few weeks were the hardest with having to take him outside every 2-4 hours. They are definitely in need of temperature control. He doesn't want to be too hot or too cold.

Both our Bostons were rescues, different personalities as everyone says. Our first guy lived a happy 14 years. 😔 Our second we drove from Boston to Kentucky to pick him up. He has been with us 2 years and is 4 years old now. He has the bark of a killer but the personality of a lover, and can jump like he’s in the circus! I think this is why no one one wanted him. Well he works great with us!!!🥰

Our experience with Boston Terriers runs very close to Dr. Lindsey's description. Personally, I never thought to much about Bostons. They were cute, but ... ... then my girlfriend adopted one at an adoption event at her local bank where they feature each dog for a week, to replace her 14y/o " Sneagle" Jasmine who had recently passed away. She is Black &White, features all the Boston color characteristics, however: she has been blessed with varying degrees of black speckles of varying sizes all over her body, especially fine spotted sox on all fours . She has been previously names Betty Boop , so we kept that. I've never encountered a dog with more character personality and such expressive eyes and face. She adjusted to her new home immediately and brings joy to our lives daily. Get a Boston Terrier ! They love their humans.

I had a Boston for 7 years. We loved him so much. His name was Donut. He was the best dog with the biggest personality. So loving, loved to play, loved car rides. Got into trouble from time to time. He would mark in the house which was a painful habit but we loved him even with his issues. Unfortunately he got IVD (intervertebral disc disease) and was paralyzed over night a few months ago. It broke my heart into a billion pieces because we had to put him to sleep. It was so sudden and he was in immense pain. I def want another Boston but I am so worried about the IVD happening again. I don’t think my heart can take it but it’s hard to think of having another breed after having a Boston ❤

I’m Australian and have my first Boston terrier. Got her because I was thinking about a pug or Frenchie until I found out about all the health issues and boy I’m glad I did. She still has a cute little squishy face but has much more projection than those do and we have no issues with her breathing except for some light snoring. We have been to dog parks with pugs and frenchies not and it is really sad so see my little Comet zooming around like a mad thing and to see the pugs and Frenchies watching wistfully while snuffling and snorting around barely doing any exercise. She does get some hay fever and watery eyes because of her bug eyes so she needs some antihistamines when it gets really bad and we have special wipes to keep them clean. Unfortunately people in Australia are wising up to this breed now so no doubt they will start to be breed irresponsibly and their health here will also start to deteriorate. But for now the Bostons in Australia are still a pretty healthy little breed.

My mom has a Boston Terrier! She is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. My mom has had her for probably 6 years now and I think I only ever heard her bark or make any noise maybe 3 times. I always tease that she is mute because she literally doesn't make any noise. My mom's Boston Terrier is a bit on the older side but you wouldn't be able to tell! she acts just like a puppy. She is the perfect mix of a playful and lazy dog.

She loves running after our American Shepard and Is best friends with our 16 month old Standard Poodle. Yard fence surrounding the house lets the dogs run around and around. The BT runs full blast. I've had 6 Boston's now in the 50 years they have been in the family. They are the only breed for me. One health issue you didn't mention was they are also prone to seizures from about age 8. All, but one, has made it to 13 years and my current one is 12 and doing well, not even showing signs of the seizures that every other one of mine have had. One thing a prospective Boston parent needs to realize, though, is from the time you get them until they are about 2.5 years old, they can be very destructive when left alone. My mother had a two tier coffee table back in the 70s and our own Boston chewed off all 8 corners of that 2 years. However, as I stated at the beginning...despite these things, you cannot have a better family member that wears fur than a Boston and I hope to get #7 before I leave this planet.

Great dogs if your in an appartment with fussy neighbors...they are very quiet in general (mine litterally never barks at anything). The reason I mention this is because two of my closest friends have Chihuahua's (ones a mix), and they are great dogs, but a nightmare when it comes to barking (not saying all of them are)...they've both had issues with neighbors constanly complaining. Bostons are amazing all round. For dry eyes, I just give my dog a couple of drops of Burt's Bees' eye wash every day, he actually likes it (like 8 bucks off amazon and each one last me for around 6 months). He doesn't have eye issues (knock on wood), it's more of a preventative thing cause it can get really dry in the winter and his eyes are pretty bulgie.

I had lost my Bella Rose back on Jan. 9th while at the vets for checkup. the reason she was at the vets in 1st place her eye seem to be getting cloudy. she suddenly had severe seizure, afterwards the vets said we must let her go due to all the pain and suffering she was in, my Bella was barely 4 years old, I miss her so very much, but now wonder did I do the right thing?

I own 3 Bostons, or they own me. The best dog breed ever. Loving, playful and just goofy. There isn’t a day that goes by where one or all of them make me laugh.

My Zingo is a Boston Terrier. She lived almost 14 years. My profile has a picture of her. Zingo was super smart. I trained her to do about 40 commands. She was active dog like a Lab yet very small. She was very friendly yet like the dog in the video aloof meaning cool and distant at times yet very friendly. Zingo was smart, friendly and needed to be with people. She did not like being held or in lap but would sit beside you and let you pet her all day. Tempature was a concern they can not be to hot or too cold. Snubed nose they can not tolerate 85F and above and short hair they get cold at 60F. Zingo would tolerate children but if they continued to pester her she would yap and semi-bite at children. She would never bite at children but just let child known that child was bothering her to much. At the end of her life she could not see very well and got cancer. Summery, I love my Zingo and will get another Boston Terrier. Overall they are friendly, active, and wonderful companions.

I’ve had Bostons for 30 years. I can't imagine life without one. My recommendation would be to check the parents and try to get one with a little bit of a snout, rather than one with a really flat face. As cute as they are, the really flat-faced ones can have terrible breathing problems and may require airway surgery. The ones with a bit of a snout will breath better and be able to be a more active family dog. They are smart, funny, loving and friendly. You can't go wrong with a Boston.

I have 5 year old Boston Terrier named Toby. I love him so much. He’s super smart, super friendly, and super fast. He obsessed with his three dozen balls day and night. He’s the best dog I’ve ever had and if I adopt another dog it has to be Boston terrier.

I didn't want a dog, I have 2 guinea pigs that run the house. That changed when a beautiful little Boston girl was thrown out of a car in front of me. God love her, she was almost hit numerous times chasing her car. I caught her and wondered what on earth I was going to do with this tiny girl. I got her home, telling the kids we weren't keeping her, and looked online to see if someone was missing her. Mind you, in my area, we've had 15 dogs get stolen just in the last few weeks... all smoosh face, smaller dogs. So I didn't know if the people who dumped her were her owners or if they stole her and didn't want her. She wasn't posted anywhere, no chip, no collar and 2 rescues were willing to take her. That didn't work out because my son instantly became attached. He'd begged us, Santa and even tried to convince our neighbor to get him a dog for years 😂 I'm so grateful for her and I 💯 believe it was divine intervention that had me turning that corner at the right time. My son had just lost his best friend, his grandfather and his little heart had been broken so deeply. It was the first death he understood and he was extremely close to his grandpa. His beautiful blue eyes didn't sparkle the same after that and then our Charlie Moo was sent from Heaven ❤ she is an amazing dog. I've had dogs around my whole life, always big dogs too, never been around a Boston. We had some great dogs but never one like her. She is the perfect dog. I've had to explain to my son that dogs aren't normally like this and he shouldn't expect his next one to be like her, she's that wonderful. She was obviously abused previously. She's afraid of brooms, bags and if we move too quickly, she ducks and tucks her huge ears back. She's gotten so much better though. I can sweep without her crying and dropping to the floor like she used to. Time, love and patience has been healing. I can't picture life without her now, she's the perfect girl. We're extremely blessed ❤

Hi, I got a couple of questions about the Bostons. What’s the point of having three weight classes? They don’t “show” by the weight class…do they? Also, what is the concern about color? I see other breeds with all kinds of colors, some even shown by color ( ridiculous). I see early pics of original Bostons who are predominantly white. Oh and one more question. To call these dogs terriers because there was some terrier blood originally infused into the breed seems like a misnomer. There basically bred down bulldogs even Bostons are bred down from there original size. I know this all sounds hostile I don’t mean it to be, I love these guys in fact my wife and have two. Thanks. Steve.

My son rescued a brother/sister combination. They were great pets! The downside was that it was expensive to maintain their health. The eyes alone cost a fortune to keep healthy. They have since passed and I really missed their company.

What was wrong with their eyes?
@2-old-Forthischet

@@CarvedHauntsCollects the male dog developed some kind of infection and the ophthalmologist (for animals) could not save it after some treatment so had to remove it and replaced it with a glass eye. The sister developed cataracts and due to her age they decided to just let it run it's course. She eventually became totally blind. It was not cheap. On the upside, my son just rescued a new male Boston Terrier last week from the same place as the other two. It's about two years old and a really well behaved pet. This rescue actually interviews prospective homes to make sure it's in the best interest of the dogs.

I had my Boston terrier for 11 years. He passed away Jan 22 of this year. He was very devoted to me. Unfortunately, he was blind in the right eye due to glaucoma but was fine. Then a freak accident happened and I had to put him down. One of the worst days of my life. It'll be a while before I get another dog.

My two Boston Terrorists are trained not to go out our front door no matter what as a safety precaution. A dog can walk by and they'll bark at him but not set foot over the thresh hold...although on occasion they may FALL out due to sticking their necks out as far as possible. Looks like Bolt may have been trained not to, also.
