I have never had potty failures as bad as I have with my Bostons. I guess I was unable to be consistent in the beginning, and now, they're two years old and still soil the house. They can be outside playing for hours and will come in and go in the living room. I am retiring in a month and will be able to walk them every hour, so I will give this technique a shot. Fingers crossed!

We’ve owned 14 dogs before we got our first Bostie one month ago. We’ve successfully house trained NINE Italian Greyhounds-which are notoriously hard to house train. This Boston is by far the most difficult breed we’ve had. Way harder than an IG. House training a dog isn’t rocket science, but this Bostie is clueless. He is currently 14 weeks old and our IG is 18 weeks old (yes two puppies). The IG figured it out in less than a week. The Boston will pee right in front of us right after he just peed outside. He learned the dog door on his own the first week, so we know he CAN learn. We don’t take our eyes off him and take him out every 25-30 minutes. He’s gone out on his own and did his business maybe a dozen times. Maybe. We follow him when he goes out on his own, always watching. He’s a sweet boy from a very reputable breeder, but we don’t quite know what else to do. And strangely enough-he will go out on his own and poop, but will come back inside and then pee-even after he just peed. And he doesn’t sniff around looking for a place-he just stops and kinda squats and pees. WTH?!?

Hi! Would be good to talk about the health related issues and differences from this breed and the Frenchie. If you could upload something in regards to these matters, when it comes to vet visits/costs and if the breed is right for the person or not. Maybe things the breed doesn't like, some dog breeds don't like going on walks in the rain etc.

Once you you get them potty trained, they will not go in the house. If they do, it's because they could not physically hold it anymore. I remember in one house we lived. She went inside. We got home and saw the pile. She was hiding under the table shaking hard, and would not come out 😂😂. Of course we didn't get mad at her. Another time, we weren't home. She really had to go. She chewed out the side panel of a room air conditioner! We found her out back relaxing in the sun 😂😂😂 There are dogs, then there are Boston Terriers.

My Boston, Gracie, is 6 months old. On the weekends, when I’m home with her I take her out every hour to hour and a half. I still can’t pick up on a cue for when she has to go outside to potty. She doesn’t go by the door or bark. She is constantly sniffing the floor so it’s hard to tell when she means it. She’s fine during the week when she’s kenneled and the dog walker is taking her out after four hours.

We did all things you mention with Frankie, who is now 22 months old and they worked like a charm. We also used a crate early on and kept using it for quite some time. He NEVER had an accident in the crate, and we found it very helpful to get him house trained quickly. Also, to this day he runs into the crate at bedtime. I’m sure the “hidden” treats we used to leave there didn’t hurt.....

BTW, I once read, ‘Dogs know Human language, you need to learn Dog language.’ When your dog shows signs he/she wants to go potty (walking around sniffing or sitting by the door) it’s their way of talking to you. My partner and I have a 2 year old that we got as a puppy and we just rescued a 3 year old female that was used as a breeder. She is just so sweet and affectionate and we just love her. Problem is that she's a little harder to potty train. Do you think she could have some trauma from being a breeder. I don't think who ever had her let her inside their house or showed her any loving but we just love her and she's with us now and she's loved and safe.

Thanks for doing the video, I appreciate it. I already have a Tibetan Terrier, and I'm picking up my new Boston puppy at the end of the week. I have a dog door installed in the sliding door, and my other dog uses it all the time when he has to go to the bathroom, among other things. Can you tell me how you would change, or if you would change, the potty training method you described in your video? I like the idea of using a leash, but obviously training him to use the dog door at the same time complicates that. Additionally, I can't just close off the dog door because my other dog uses it. Thoughts? Thanks!

Well, it depends on what your definition of "potty train" is. Sure, Bostons learn where to go very quickly as they are highly intelligent. What's nearly impossible to do is get them to stop "marking" the house on occasion. I'm not sure if it's instinct or in order to punish the owners for being left alone for a couple of hours, but we've had our last Boston. We love their intelligence, their devotion, their love of play, and the way they love to snuggle, but what we hate is their thick headiness. Too bad.

My wife and I are high school teachers and school is starting full time here in the next two weeks. We've always wanted a Boston and our 8 year old is finally at the right age to help. Our biggest fear is not being able to potty train and crate train the puppy quick enough. We know we'll have to hire a dog walker, but we're just concerned this might be too rushed, but the puppy we want is available just this week. The breeder says they start potty training at 6 weeks. The puppy is 10 weeks old this week. We're just scared we're not gonna be able to train the pup up for our hectic teaching lives and all consistency will fly out the window. Advice? Great channel and community, thanks!

I am not sure I’ll follow up in a timely manner but, I want to train the Boston’s and our Frenchton to use a inside toilet. I’d also like to teach them to do more for themselves: open and shut doors, picking up and putting away their toys, communicating more clearly for their needs, and to listen at prompts to do simple things. One of our Boston’s stalls, not exactly sure why, when prompted to do things. Also , I’d like to teach them not to bark needlessly- like to come back inside from their secured dog yard after 22 seconds…with a bark to alert me and every 30 secs or so she will bark as a prompt to me. It doesn’t bother me thst she is giving her little alert to come in. It’s that I don’t want her to repeat her demand so frequently. Re: housebreaking: they are very easy to potty train as is our frenchton and our chewie had a short prior when she had more accidents. But now no problem. The Boston’s absolutely need consistently: our notions are in a schedule they know and live by. It can switch up depending on the weather but overall they know where and when to do what. Got to give credit to my rn mother- nurses are disciplined Tim structures and no nonsense on and off the clock. Anyway, regarding the treats to go outside. Yes my Boston will walk me ne up at 2 am to get s cookie to go outside and will stand by the door rather then urinating etc just to get the cookie. Sometimes she does it se we times a night. Mostly they don’t abuse it though.

Our female knows to go on indoor pads. We are having trouble teaching her to say she wants to go out (basically get our attention and go to the door outside)
@madweazl
@madweazl 3 жыл бұрын
Indoor pads reinforce going inside the house so I'd avoid using them at all cost. As for signs, one of ours will come get my attention but she does that all the time so it took a bit to pick up on what she was trying to tell me/us. If she wants attention, she'll come by my office chair (where I spend most of my time). At first, I thought she just wanted attention but I started paying attention to what she was doing. If she wanted attention, she'd let me pick her up or pet her but if she wanted something else, she'd back away from me trying to pet her (or pick her up). Took a couple days but I discovered that she needed (or wanted) to go out if she backed away from me. She did this at a really early age (3 months or so). Our youngest one (3.5 months now) hasn't given any clues other than running off to a different area of the house. We take her out any time she wakes from a nap, plays a bit, eats, or drinks anything. Early on, that works out to about every 20-30 minutes but if the never (or rarely) go in the house, they simply don't associate peeing or pooping in the house (it simply belongs outside).

I have a two year old rescue Boston. He is almost there...I have been leaving him out of his crate at night as of late and the part he has always had issues with is the first in the morning going out to go do his business. I don't think he was ever housetrained and I have been following all these steps. At first I would leave him in his crate at night and he never goes there but as I said I have been leaving him out lately at night and he always has an accident in the morning. I guess my question is what time or how long should I wait before letting him out in the morning? I can wake up earlier to do so I was just wondering how long he can hold it etc. How many hours? Fyi I do take him out right before he goes to sleep.

My 11 week old Boston does a good job at notifying that he needs to go #2, however, as far as going pee, we are still struggling in this area. It is also freezing outside and his walk from the crate to outside is pretty far. I have been carrying him to his potty spot because if I don't he either will go in the house on the way or I have to drag him on a leash and take a few steps and I don't want to do that because it instils fear. I am worried that by always carrying him, he is not going to catch on to it. Any advice?

So basically we’re being trained. 🙂 I’ve learned my little guy’s cues and he has very few accidents, but he takes no initiative to go to the door when he has to go (he’s 16 weeks old now).

I wish it was so simple for us. For 2 weeks our 8-month-old Bostin Eddie has been peeing in the house. In the future, we can walk him out 2-3 times a day and so far it seems impossible(

We have successfully trained both Bostons and Shepherds for many years. In all of those years we have only had one problem child (every family has at least one). She hated to go out in the rain and snow, we have a back yard so we would let the dogs out. For many years she was good about going outside only, until she was about 6, and started peeing in the house (never pooping). Of course we took her to the dr. to see if there was some kind of bladder infection or something, thinking it was excessive peeping. Nothing wrong good bill of health. So I was determined to get to the bottom of this. I went out with the dogs, after a few days, a very cold winter day, I noticed that Mackey was done very quickly, and ready to go in. Her mistake was she squatted to peep close to the stairs to get back in the house.....NO YELLOW SNOW. She had been squatting but not peeing and then coming in the house all casual like, until no one was paying attention, and peeing under the dining room table. It was holiday season so I was in that room a lot. I have never or ever had a problem like this since. That girl was too smart and funny. Most of our dog stories are about her and the large Shepard she had total control of.

I would start trying to put your Boston on your work schedule. So if you know you'll be leaving for work at 6:30 take your Boston out as if you are leaving for work. Then again at lunch time if you come home for lunch. Basically start acting like you're at work weeks before you go back so your Boston can get used to that schedule.

Thanks. Honestly it was something Bella did naturally. It just happens to be one of her cues. I’m sure you can train your Boston to do this through repetition, but there is nothing we did to make her do this.

Hi there, I’m planning to get a boston terrier soon. I’m a novice owner so I’m doing all the research I can before getting this dog. I live in Canada where it is winter for 6 months lmao. Is it possible to potty train them both indoors and outdoors? If so, how? Im worried that winter months will be really cold for them and the times I have to go to work, I wont be able to let them outside to potty and they’ll end up peeing/pooing everywhere in the house. Any adivce ?

We got Boston Terrier 3 months old puppy in December, it is too cold outside if we try to take her for potty, she was shivering not going potty, I have put Potty pads in a corner to get adjusted, she goes there once a while but most of the times it goes all around the home it is getting very difficult training, since we are not taking out we never know when she will go potty all around the home. I keep trying to tell her go potty here by taking to potty pads, but she is not following, and these she even eating potty pads. any suggestion greatly appreciated

Then my Boston terrier is broken. 😂 I got her when she was almost 7 months old. Immediately tried to teach her to go outside. She never knew what grass was before me apparently and was petrified of everything outside. Cars, other dogs, loud noises, people talking, she tucks tail and cowers. I would walk her around or as the weather allowed and she still would not relax. She will literally hold her pee and poop until we get away from the commotion which is inside. As soon as we would walk in she would drop her bottom. Of course I clapped my hands to discourage this and cleaned the area. I crate trained her, she will pee on her bedding. I had a timer on my phone for every 15 minutes we would keep trying. This is difficult going up and down three stories all day long and half the night. We persisted. The most I’ve been able to get my Boston to do is mostly avoid going to the bathroom on the carpet (she still messes up and has accidents) now goes on the tile in our kitchen but flat out will not relax enough to go outside. She’s three years old now and it’s highly frustrating that she’s not made any progress. After trying for almost two years I’ve pretty much have given up.

My now 7 yo Boston was bell trained, as my pug was before him. It worked rather well for both dogs. However, he no longer uses the bell. If he needs to go out, he stands by the back door and waits and waits until I feel him staring at the back of my head. At night, he lets me sleep for a good 6-7 hour stretch before I feel him pawing at my face. He still has his "accidents", but I don't give him too hard a time, because I can see that look of guilt on his face when he peed on the floor.

How many weeks on average does it take to totally potty train a Boston puppy? I am going on a month and he still is having accidents. I think I’m not being as consistent as I should be and not watching him like a hawk. We were doing really well until my mom came to visit with her elderly dog that went around marking and peeing on things. I may need to get one of those black lights to find hidden pee pee spots and thoroughly clean with a powerful pee destroyer. .

I have a 6 month old I acquired from an excellent breeder. I have potty trained 3 large breed dogs prior to my female BT. I am struggling with this dog. I have a fenced in backyard and a dog door that opens when she approaches. She goes out often to do her business, but she continues to pee and poop in the house. So will not go in her crate, but when I release her in the morning I can see that she is running to a corner rather than going out the dog door. She will poop outside then come into the house and poop again in the house. She pees with reckless abandon in the house. I will continue to crate her in the night and partially during the day for another month. If she continues to go in the house it is my plan to hire a dog trainer. I feel that she is willful and has little interest in pleasing me. She has learned many commands and will do them reliably on one day, and then completely ignore me on another day. Even with treats, she will simply choose to disobey. She is adorable and fun to observe, but I give BT's very low marks on intelligence, desire to please their owner, attentiveness, and compliance. She is my 3rd dog, the others were large breeds. I did not expect this level of difficulty. I would advise others, thinking of getting a BT, to do their research. The BT is not particularly intelligent and not a good learner. I do training EVERY DAY and walk her 3 to 4 times per day. And she rewards me with puddles and small piles of poop in the home.
