Our second hand cars are cheaper than the rest of the eu, mainly because of supply and demand. We can only sell our rhd cars on our small island. So supply far out strips demand. That's why you can get some great buys for a grand.

Age and location is the biggest factor when it comes to insurance price. Since 2001 when I turned 25 (got full no claims), I've never had a quote of over 300 (for first year) doesn't matter what I insure or look up Alwasy between 280-350. 2 years ago I insured a 2005 ka for 120,for my girl to learn in. Then she took over the insurance (1700). Even in 1996 I tried to insure a cavalier gsi and that was "only" 1700. I didn't bother and bought an 1991 escort van. That cost me 700, to insurer in Liverpool, I moved to North Wales and the year after it was 400. Once I hit 25, its been a steady 300. That's form a 97 rover 420 sli to a gtc and now a Leon 190. All around £300pa.

Basically if you are young or have no no claims bonus or worse both, you are going to get screwed on insurance unless you like 'black boxes' or 'fronting' another driver on your policy or just lying about other things to your insurance which would leave you screwed if you ever needed it. Classic car insurance is generally cheap though. Only £170 for the year on my modified MK1 Eunos

Don't think you explained the tax system particularly well, although it is complex, really you need a visual, or at the very least the info in front of you. The old system (upto 2001) was engine size based, cars under 1650 cc qualifying for the cheaper rate of around £130, and those over being around £250 (don't know exactly, havent checked for years), then from 2001-17 it was CO2 based, with the cleanest cars (under 100g/km) being free, those under 120g/km being very cheap (£20-30) and anything over that starting around £130 going up the more CO2 it produces, with the caveat that as they added more bands in 2006 cars upto 06 are no more than £305 a year, but the most expensive is £550 after that. From 2017 all cars are £140 a year, except new cars, but thats effectively a sales tax theyve utilised the car road tax system to implement, then as you say £40k+ cars do incur an additional premium. Basically, depending on your choice of car it can cost you no tax, or a huge amount, and you rightly mentioned that this has an impact on values, as a 2006 car might be worth £1200 but need another £550 to be spent just to drive it on the road.

This video would be much more better if the video would be divided in chunks like: "buying a car" from minute 3 to 5 for example (I don't know if this is the case). I'm telling this because I'm not a UK resident or whatsoever, but I heard a youtuber say that the insurance system in the UK it's rather expensive or something like that. So obviously what I'm interested in is how is to own a car in the UK and how does the insurance system work.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 5 жыл бұрын
Just a couple of slight corrections: the new car tax bands changed on 1st April 2017, not 2016, and in addition to the surcharge for vehicles with a list price of over £40,000, there is also a surcharge for diesels which do not meet their emissions targets (this can vary somewhat). There may be other surcharges as well, seemingly as and when the government feels like it! From the mid-1990s and up to March 2001, tax was based on engine size, one rate for up to 1.5 litres and one for over 1.5 litres. This remains in place to this day as a legacy for anyone buying a car from before 2001. Any car over 40 years old, of course, does not need tax or an MOT (although you need to apply for an exemption before it is granted), and does not pay for the London Ultra Low Emission Zone! Many sensible people with such old classics do still have an annual MOT, though.
@StephenButlerOne
@StephenButlerOne 5 жыл бұрын
I was amazed when I checked to see if my 2015 2l diesel GTC would pass the London low emission tax and it failed. I bet that caught alot of locals out big time. Wasn't it sold as a way to get ten plus year old out of the city? Anyjow my car was up for renewal and I got a petrol for the first time in 15years. Its relatively powerful, (leon st fr 190) and nippy, but god I miss the torque.

@@StephenButlerOne I changed my 2014 diesel Chevrolet Cruze in 2017 for exactly the same reason. It fell foul of the legislation by about a year, which was very irritating... My petrol Seat does get around the same economy, though, which is reassuring, but nowhere near the same performance as yours!
@StephenButlerOne
@StephenButlerOne 5 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting with that performance it come at a cost of mpg. Though the gtc diesel only ever got 36mpg (my old laguna only 110bhp got 55mpg every month), the leon is currently at 34mpg, so with the 10p difference in fuel cost. Its actually cheaper to run. However my biggest annoyance with both the gtc and worse the Leon is the small fuel tanks. 45litres is a joke, for a mid 30s car. I struggle to get 380miles out of it. I loved the laguna for its 75 litre tank an 55mpg. It would do 65-70mpg on long trips meaning a 1000miles a tank was possible. Though at that time petrol was high £1.40s so it would hurt filling it up. I'll add I hate visiting fuel stations so I'll run a car till the light comes on (then some), then fill it full. I cba with this £20 a go nonsense some do (my mother for one). I'd rather bight the bullet and fill it.

if your car road tax is due, and you'd been clamped, make sure you can pay it out online. However, make sure you sit and watch over your car after your car until the clamp is release because these dvla are heartless, untruthful, dishonest morons that after you'd paid, they're still coming to tow your car away except if they meet you with the car. Two days ago this happened to me, I bought my car on sunday, two days to the day it was clamped. I was clamped late in the night, and it was so cold and unexpected. I 've never bought a car untaxed, and I didn't see this coming. Believe me I asked the dealer so that I know every detail on this car but he told me that everything was intact. I would only tax this vehicle for £20, why would I want to risk being intimidated by dvla rogue workers? I couldn't sleep throughout that night, I knew what these people are up to, this is my third car being stolen by the council, bailiff and now came the dvla (I believe these people or say corporation including the police) all work together. I called the police on this matter, and what I heard from the police officer who spoke with me made me cry not only for the situation but the world where my children would grow in. For a person {or police officer} to talk and said that she doesn't mean to be 'mean' indicates that she realised that she's being 'mean'. VERY SAD! The receptionist told me they may be coming that morning to release the clamp but not sure of the actual time, and that I should call the other office. As I called the other office, the nasty piece of work receptionist told me it would be later in the afternoon, and she doesn't know when; Well I came to realise their logic, all the confusions were to let me leave the car unattempted to and they could tow the car before I was back. To cut a long story short, the dvla tow-driver came out of his truck with the hope that I wasn't in the car and he would tow the car {mind you he now came a few minutes after the last receptionist told me that the car would be declamped in the afternoon}. Being towed would enable them to charge more money, and opportunity to sell the vehicle. I was waiting at the back of the car but I lied down because I was frozen to death, I thank God I looked up, and here I saw his tow truck and him taking a photo of the sign board around. When he saw me he jumped, he wasn't expecting to see me; I took out my phone to take his photo, and asked him some few questions but he didn't alter a word back to me. This dvla bastard rogue wanted to steal almost £5k car just like that after I'd paid them overnight, and all it's needed was to release the vehicle . UK isn't a pleasant and happy country to abode anymore, too many corrupt, dishonest corporations, and greedy individuals operating here and there. May God's Kingdom come!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I have couple of questions regarding UK road tax: a) I read somewhere that people buying cars costing more than £40,000 now have to pay a premium rate of £325 on top of the standard VED from year 2 to year 6 of ownership. Does this rule apply to buying a used car as well? What if I buy a 3-year old used car (newly priced at £55,000) for £33,000? Will I still have to pay the premium rate for next 3 years? b) I also read that cars registered from 1 March 2001 to 1 April 2017 will still be subjected to the old road tax system based on CO2 emission rate. So if the above mentioned car was an e-hybrid version and registered in March 2017, will I pay road tax according to the previous system? Which is zero because it's emission rate is less than 100g/kg! Sounds too good to be true! Thanks in advance.
