I'm sorry he's got it so bad. :( My mare Luna also has allergies, but so far not the itchy kind. She has trouble with her breathing and she breaks out in hives. Last Summer it was so bad she looked like her hide was made out of bubble wrap. It was terrible! Her main triggers are dust and bug bites. I have to wet her hay down and she's on a ton of supplements , but what seems to help her the most is Spirulina and OTC antihistamines. Generic Benadryl had really helped her this year. Tea Tree Oil spray really helps her break outs, too. I hope your boy is doing better, and you have things managed. Stay strong! :)

Bless your mare, it’s so tough for them. I hope she’s doing okay. Thank you, (touch wood ) my old chap is doing well. He always has a few itchy rubbed spots, but he’s coping well. I’m always finding new triggers, so just have to do our best. Interestingly my boy is quite allergic to Tea Tree. So pleased you’ve found ways to help your mare.

Informative video. I'm so sorry he has such problems. I have a slightly itchy younger fellow and I can't seem to get his coat where it needs to be. I'm trying different things and also eliminating things in hopes we can figure it out. Thanks.

Hi. Know this posting is a few years ago but have you / did you considered his micro biome? So many issues begin in the gut and addressing that works wonders in so many ways. Love your posts and approach and personality 😘

Hi, Thank you for your comment, no didn’t consider his micro biome at the time. Now he’s semi retired we’ve noticed a huge improvement in him and we now think it was because he was allergic to his own sweat or sweating caused a strong reaction for him. Certainly something to consider if any future problems though. ☺️

Have you ever had allergy testing done on him? I have a 5 year old mare who has had pretty severe allergies her whole life. I haven’t worked with her as much as I’d like because they are so bad. She is going to hopefully be getting allergy testing done within the month and starting treatments 🤞🏻

Hi, yes definitely considered it when chatting to the vets. But because we already know he is allergic to quite a few things, the vets suspect the list is probably never ending and that even the allergy testing wouldn’t pick it all up. Plus the end result is still a bit the same. In that we can only do so much about his pollen issues, insects bites etc. It’s a combination of all his allergies rather than one particular. I wish there was more we could do though. Fingers crossed for your mare, I hope you get some answers to what causes her allergy issues.
