Haha I'm not sure why I'm here. My lil bud Olaf is sleeping curled up in my hand. Honestly, I got so lucky with his temperment. He doesn't poop in his wheel, he's got his little designated corner where he does his business, and is SUPER friendly with people. He's totally fine with being handled by strangers, and will only huff at me and be grumpy for about 10 seconds after I wake him up. They really do learn the sound of your voice, and I've noticed that he'll always follow me around my apartment if he's in his hamster ball if I talk to him. They're super rewarding pets, and even though you're going to get pooped on a few times, they're totally worth it!

Girls, do your research! Hedgies need a saucer weel, the one that you show can hurt their back. Also, they need a heater (as they're from Africa, 27C is recommended) And you can train them to pop always in the same spot so the cage would be cleaner. I also recommend to feed them worms at least two times a week as they contain a lot of protein and fat. If you can, have them with you while your at home -avoiding noisy atmospheres- . Mine always sleeps on my legs while I'm reading, painting or watching TV. If they associate your smell with relaxing moments, they will be friendly in a short period of time.
@vanillislimeasmr38717 жыл бұрын
How to make them poop in one place?
@jolief78277 жыл бұрын
You don't have to have a saucer wheel as long as you have the correct size. When they run on their wheel and their back is straight they will have no issues.
@alexcagg6 жыл бұрын
Put two separate textures in the cage, I do paper towels and fleece. Put the wheel over the paper towels as hedgies usually poop while moving the poop scent will accumulate on the paper towels and wheel and the hedgehog will naturally use it as a bathroom. Buty ultimately its a hedgehog. There will be poop, it'll get on the wheel they'll run in it and walk around the cage. But they wont actively shit in their home if you train them like this, keeping fleece and beds cleaner.

Harley might be stubborn due to you guys putting him in such a small cage. Animals need bigger places to roam. Try a wire cage with a lot more space and see if his behavior changes. There's quite a few studies out there explaining why hamsters, bunnies, dogs, etc. tend to have negative personality traits when put in small cages.

Even a large bin cage is better than this wire cage. If you buy a big plastic bin (the biggest you can find - at least 450 square feet) and let the lid open your hedgehog will not be able to jump AND will have the ventilation he needs. Don’t stick them in small cages or bins.

I used to have 2, but recently one of mine passed away at the age of 3 almost 4 :( If any of you are planning to get a pet hedgehog, just know that they need so much attention, and they take a lot of work. Each hedgehog has its own personality, but if you want your hedgehog to warm up to make sure you give it lots of love!!
@andihearts50337 жыл бұрын
a cheaper and better option to cages are plastic storage bins. the hedgehogs can't try to climb them and hurt their feet and they're obviously cheaper and also come in a variety of sizes, the cage they showed is far too small, they need room to move.

I usually let my Hedgie smell my hand first so he knows it's me. Then I use two fingers to keep him from totally balling up. Usually about two seconds later he's perfectly fine. He's also very cranky when I try to hold him during quilling. I've tried bowls for his food, and the Hedgie food (he hates it) and he prefers just to pull it under his floof bedding and hide it for late night snacks.

I've had hedgehogs and I would also recommend you clean their cage more often than they cleaned theirs - That wheel was discusting.
@mrshhofficial10 жыл бұрын
about how often?
@saratague10 жыл бұрын
H H- At least once a week, but if the wheel looks really bad, clean it sooner. You have to have the plastic wheels, not the ones with the spaces in the bottom or their feet get stuck and it can injure them, but this particular wheel isn't a good brand for a hedgehog - It's curved and almost keeps the poop on the wheel. If you're going to have that kind of wheel, it's fine, but make sure to clean it more often.
@toadrocks61910 жыл бұрын

I fed my first hedgie, Louie, quality dry cat food, he loved it, but he died after having him for a little over a year, not sure if it was because of the cat food, I read that once they become adults, the fish oil can cause digestive problems, don't know if that's true, my new hedgie, Chewbacca(Chewie), eats Hedgehog formula food and he loves the freeze dried mealworms. Btw, they shouldn't eat everything.

But she calmed down very quickly and now, literally like two days later, she's so sweet and snuggly and sleeps in my bed because she hates her cage. (She's a rescue and her previous owners kept her in a cage so small she could barely turn around so we think she hates her current cage because she's had bad experiences with them previously.

You absolutely cannot have a hedgehog in a 2 ft cage thus is far far too small! Also bars and cages are NOT recommended any recommend breeder or well informed hedgehog owner will tell you this. A vivarium is most recommended as the have to be kept at a minimum of 21 degrees and a vivarium is the best home to contain the heat. you really shouldn't be advising other potential hedgehog owners if you don't know yourself 😞👎👎👎

In Belgium you’re not allowed to have hedgehogs, but we found a baby in our backyard. It had a little wound and it seemed confused since it was walking around during the day. So we took care of him for a few days but eventually took him to a sanctuary because it was really difficult to keep cats away. I’m really hoping the doctor at the sanctuary will take care of him for now but will let us have him back when he’s better.

Ok first of all meal worms are very fattening for them, they need crickets with their protein. At least 3-5 times a week (they're prone to obesity) and not those bottles because then they can stab their eyes get an eye infection and then their eyes will have to be removed. :-)

In the end, I don't get why people get hedgehogs? They poop everywhere; keep you awake at night; have spiky quills that hurt; aren't friendly; may get you sick 'cause of potential salmonella; they die after like 6 years... Does cuteness really make up for all of that?
@MyRennae8 жыл бұрын
***** Dogs can protect you and your belongings, they can learn to guide blind people, they are affectionnate (hedgehogs aren't), they live longer, they have a basic understanding of feelings (people who've had dogs know what I'm talking about, they're sad when you are and happy when you are)...there's no comparison. Try to make a point instead of venting.

Informative but you forget to mention common household things that may pose a hazard for your hedgehog or their general durability. Like for example. Is there anything else besides tea tree oil I should keep a hedgehog away from? Other pets that could see the hedgehog as a potential meal? From what heights can a hedgehog fall from without hurting themselves? Important for people that want to form a bond with the hedgehog and possibly play with them on their couches or beds etc. Other than that it was spot on!

Sorry, but that cage is waaaay to small, girls. WAY to small. It's barely big enough for a baby guinea pig. Heck, I wouldn't even put my hamster in it. You need to build him a coop, as in SEVERAL feet larger and deeper than the one you're advising people. Hedgehogs are by nature explores and food foragers, and they love to bury wholes too (instinct). These are the kinda animals you do NOT want to keep in a small environment, believe me. Unless you want to get a very grumpy one, like yours. Cheers!

forgot to mention about their claws. they need their claws clipped regularly, or they will curl under and grow into their paws.

the noisy wheel and animal nouses at night help me sleep. I've had a lot of hamsters, it is kinda like white noise and it comforts me to remind me of my little buddy.

Pro-tip. Cottage cheese is a good snack for them. Sometimes you get catfoods that are low in calcium and over a prolonged amount of time your hedgehog could develop bone diseases or suffer from tooth decay.

Seems like a pretty bad idea. Hedgehogs are pretty wild, they are nocturnal, they like to burrow, they don't like to be handled (hence the spikes), they won't be happy in a confined space, handled by diurnal humans. Having a pet is selfish as it is, this is taking it a bit far.

THEY ARE African pygmy hedgehogs, NOT wild ones. They WON'T SURVIVE without at least 25-30 °C. Also, no pygmy hedgehog exists on nature. they are domestic, like cats, and like cats, they are happy at home, and even wouldn't SURVIVE, outside. HAVEN'T THEY GOT THE RIGHT TO SURVIVE AND LIVE ?

never buy an animal because they are "cute".......a pet is a huge commitment and you should think twice before adopting one. hedgehogs are better left in the wild..please

+Doctor DJ You'd be surprised how many domestic cats can survive in the wild. Genetically the only real difference between domestic and wild cats is a lost fear of humans. Besides that they retain feral traits.

Courtney Carroll These are hedgehogs, though. They'd easily die because they wouldn't know what to eat or maybe even get eaten by some other animal.

I Absolutely love my hedgehog.. He is spoiled, still learning his likes and dislikes food wise. I work nights from home, so we spend a lot of time together. We shop online for cool stuff for him 😎 He has a BIG cage with a dome, saucers, chair, tent, food corner, snack wheel & a cool wicker bed with a nice soft hedgehog furry bed inside it. I am going to be getting him an outside play area to enjoy the beautiful weather this spring & summer. He is an early morning runner , between 5-7am..which is actually perfect..because that's when I am winding down from work too. We literally have the same perfect schedule together. I got him from a family that didn't have the time needed for him unfortunately, but they definitely wanted the best home for him..I'm glad I was chosen. I send them videos and pictures because thier little kids were sad he had to go. Now its like having an extended family 👪

using fleece for cages is really bad. they're related to shrew and moles and love burrowing, and they will try to burrow which is bad for their nails. i use carefresh natural bedding. don't use fabric for their cages

Holding them doesn't hurt at all and tip - when your getting a hedgehog out of his home be slow, they get scared by big movements and sounds Ik this because I own a hedgehog :)

glasstanks or terrariums are recommended because many hedgies are climber and their feet get stucked and brake. Secondly its easier for keeping a constantly warm temperature. Fruit and vegetables are not that good for ur hedgies digestion.
@Mark-sp4xs7 жыл бұрын
To help a hedghog get a good schedual for you, for a couple days, leave lights on 3 hours earlier and keep them up, then in the day you keep them in light later in the day

Other than cat food, my hedgie will only eat mealworms. I got an insect mix that is mostly that but has some crickets and grasshoppers in it. He won't eat those.
@ashleya26159 жыл бұрын
I noticed ur hedgehog seemed to be jumpy and skid-dish, i recommend one of u putting ur old shirt that has ur natural smell on it and put it in the little home so that he knows, u are a secure and safe person. Then for a while he should stop curling up in a ball when u grab him...Also his cage needs to be a bit bigger then the one you have..I recommend u getting a bigger one and i know that he will love you guys so much for it.

the cage in the video is way too small... in a bigger cage you are able to put a bowl, or something like that in it, and fill it with sand or just bedding, in the bowl should be space for the wheel too. With this its a lot more sanitary and you don't need to cleen the cage that often.

One thing that a lot of videos don't touch on, is pain management. If your hedgey gets sick, or experiences some sort of pain, you can use Children's Liquid Tylenol (160mg acetaminophen dosage). DO NOT GIVE THEM THE WHOLE DOSE. Dip a toothpick in the tylenol liquid, and apply a drop the size of a small bead, or size of a donut sprinkle, to do the trick. Put it on a wax worm, and they'll eat it right up (be sure to smash the waxworm's head to keep it from rolling over and wiping off the medicine).

The Carolina storm wheel on Etsy is practically silent. I swear by that! & I use softwood. And you really shouldn’t keep a hedgehog in a cage smaller than a 4x4.
