More expectations that aren't always realities: Expectation: "Guinea pigs are excellent beginner pets for children! They are way less work than a cat or dog." Reality: They are actually more difficult than they look, and they can easily be stressed out by inexperienced children. Expectation: "Guinea pigs don't poop where they eat! Why would they do that? They just go in corners or in their litter boxes." Reality: There is literally nowhere that you can't find a guinea pig poop, even when they're litter-trained. Expectation: "Let's get two guinea pigs and just hope that they'll get along! After all, they are sociable creatures!" Reality: Assuming that two guinea pigs will get along fine is like assuming that a cat and a dog will be best friends. Expectation: "Let's get a Mrs. Guinea pig and a Mr. Guinea pig!" Reality: More babies than you can handle. Expectation: "Let's just get two male guinea pigs or two females! That way, we won't end up with babies!" Reality: Some females and especially males just aren't compatible. Choose your guinea pigs wisely. Expectation: "Let's just neuter or spay our guinea pigs! That way, we won't end up with babies!" Reality: Neutering and especially spaying guinea pigs can be dangerous, and won't stop males from chasing females around. Expectation: "Guinea pigs are just rodents, and they don't live very long." Reality: Actually they can live over 8 years. Expectation: "Guinea pigs can live over 8 years? That means that we'll have our beloved guinea pigs for a very long time!" Reality: Sadly, that's just not always the case. Guinea pigs can just get sick and die when they look healthy. And believe me, it's traumatizing. It really is. :(
@Lori-jm9cm3 жыл бұрын
Yes, oh so true. All of this. The guinea pig health thing is especially the most painful. I consider myself a knowledgeable and responsible guinea mama and yet I have had several guinea pig deaths over the years, and every single one of them was completely unexpected and sudden. I just lost one of my two girls a few days ago and although I took her in to the vet the morning after I noticed she did not eat the evening before, less than 48 hours later she was gone.
@aleaciaball69323 жыл бұрын
@@Lori-jm9cm and no one knows why they die?
@Lori-jm9cm3 жыл бұрын
@@aleaciaball6932 Sometimes yes, Aleacia, the vet will know, but often by the time a guinea pig shows signs of illness that are recognizable as such by owners, even if diagnosed, it can be too late. If a guinea pig doesn't eat, due to not feeling well, in a VERY short time this can be fatal all by itself, due to GI stasis which would be a secondary problem, when possibly the initial one could have been treated successfully. And for lots of people, particularly new owners because guineas are very different , between not seeing signs in time, to waffling on whether it's necessary, to worrying about the expense, and one of the worst, not being able to find a vet who sees guinea pigs AND has an opening immediately, lots of times there is too long a time before they are seen.. I knew what I was doing and still lost my girl, and tho I have 2 different options for care and both are good, she died and I never got a satisfactory answer. Could have been pneumonia, or it could have been a tumor, x-ray inconclusive. To be honest I'm very much struggling with that explanation still. It has been a heartbreaking experience, being a guinea pig owner, because I knew what I was doing and gave them great homes, vet care, and still had very traumatic and sudden loses of several of mine over the years. I did not ever breed or mate my guinea pigs, so that was never a factor. But trust me, have IN ADVANCE, a vet who knows guinea pigs WELL, be aware of the cost because SMALLER PET DOES NOT EQUAL SMALLER VET BILL, and learn all you can before you get a guinea pig. ALSO to add to the list above. A happy healthy pig needs a cage at least 3 times the size of a pet store cage Vitamin C vitamin C CRUCIAL and not drops in water. CalciumAND phosphorous content in fruit and veggies Learn what's good, not good and also what fruit veg and other foods should NEVER be fed. Alfalfa hay, only for young pigs and pregnant ones. Then switch to Timothy hay PELLETS oddly, many pellets are made with primarily Alfalfa which again , not suitable for most pigs over 6 months. But they don't say "for young guinea pigs" straight out. Again, a lot to learn to take best care and still they are not going to have the long lives you want them to, much of the time. Educate yourself and know that they are awesome but messy, delicate and require patience. Also not one you should just fill a water bottle, throw a huge bowl of food in and leave for the weekend either.
@Eedg7692 жыл бұрын
Two guinea pigs. They had a litter of three (healthy), then daddy pig got mommy pig AND daughter pig pregnant, for 2 additional litters. One litter had 4 stillborns and one survivor (named Lucky, of course). Other litter was 4 little piglets. So within 6 months we went from 2 to 10 pigs. Four were given away; of the rest, they all died within 2 years, leaving the final pig - Lucky - to live on alone for another three years. It was a good experience but we didn’t do free-range or carpeted cages (yuck) - instead wood chips which had to be cleaned out weekly.

Haha, this is so accurate. I can relate to all of these realities, especially the 2:56 AM cam and cleaning reality! My two guinea pigs' cage is in my bedroom and I have resorted to wearing ear plugs to muffle the sound of the water bottle at all hours of the night. And, although I tidy their cage several times a day, it seems as soon as I am finished they once again have poop and hay all over the place (which is exactly why I tidy it up several times a day!) But I wouldn't trade my little cuties for anything because I love them. :)

If I get up for the restroom in the middle of the night I have to be extra quiet... If they hear me moving around they think it's breakfast time and start screaming and zooming around. Doesn't matter if it's 1am. My footsteps mean breakfast. Sigh.

Thank you for this! I watch guineapigs on youtube and see all these lovely clean cages - and I'm spot cleaning sometimes three times a day and it's poop everywhere! It's nice to see that I'm not the only one struggling with it! Also nice to see nose bops and stealing food too. My two (soon to be three) have to eat that one bit of hay the other one has even though there is a full hay rack, so they'll start snatching it.

Everything you captured in this video was perfect. They wake me up randomly throughout the night and I can’t keep them in one area when I let them roam. In fact, one of my piggies refuses to share a living space with the others. Nonetheless, I love them very much. Great content! ✨

I took care of my niece and nephews piggies for a week. Quite the experience. Took a couple days for them to open up to me but once they knew I was the hooman feeding them the wheeks wouldn’t stop 😆. Definitely would do it again, or get 2 of my own 🙂

I'm doing my best for my first time taking care of guinea pigs. I treat them as my children (though I don't have any 😂) They're easily startled, but so far they are getting use to some of the noises produced by my movements, and they've started liking me too by liking and smelling my hand. They're definitely hard to take care but it's definitely worth it!

I had my Guinean pig in a small home for a couple years now 😞 I have recently seen things about having bigger homes for them. Me and my mom made a bigger place for him to live (it’s huge!) and I am so thankful for your help to show me the cage size that should be the regular size. He already looks happier. And if you have a Guinea pig it’s really simple just get a c&c cage or make a wooden cage! Thank you again! And he doesn’t have a buddy right now because his brother ( Guinea pig friend’) passed away. He will forever be missed.

sister in law was moving, needed someone to look after her cavies, she had this big assed outdoor cage setup, anyways the dogs loved them, were obsessed, they would lie there watching them and interacting with them for hours, so we ended up getting our pets some pet guinea pigs and now the two mutts are over the moon with joy.
