Éowyn the Shieldmaiden of Rohan is a renowned hero of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, and her bravery saw the defeat of the Witch-king. Within her lies renewal as well, for she becomes a healer rather than a warrior. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Éowyn in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

‘‘Tis folly to part a shield maiden from her sword, for her greatest gifts are skill in battle and the will to defend home and hearth. @@christianfarren1179 Faramir did "welcome her strength and spirit" and helped her by his love (not pity) to find healing for her broken spirit, after she was almost destroyed in accomplishing the greatest single act of valour in battle in the whole story. Please re-read all Faramir says in the chapter "the Houses of Healing" Like all Tolkien's best work, it is profound and rewards many readings. Love can’t cure everything, but it can make the pain more bearable - I believe that’s the case here, Eowyn and Faramir didn’t exactly “cure” each other but their love and companionship helped them better cope with the PTSD and depression from their battles, which is realistically the best anyone suffering from mental illness can hope for.

This line was actually from the movies, but taken from a line of dialogue between Eowyn and the warden of the houses of Healing. "It needs but one foe to breed a war, not two, Master Warden;() and those who have not swords can still die upon them." She was actually saying this to him because even after slaying the witch king and being on the brink of death, she still sought death in battle.

You might say that Eowyn was the punchline in Glorfindel's longest-running practical joke... When he said that (approx) "Not by the hand of man will he be killed" it could be taken that he meant that it would be an elf that would do it, maybe even himself, and so the Witch-king kept his fear of the elf-lords (as we see at the Ford of Bruinan scene in the Fellowship) which played well into keeping the ring-wraiths away from elf-lands during the 3rd age. Of course, it could also be a dwarf that would end him, and there is no record of the Witch-king assaulting the dwarves, either, although they were also instrumental in frustrating various of Sauron's plans. Also, it kept him fearful of the wizards, who were not men, but maiar, angels who only looked like men, and so he would retreat from the power of Gandalf on Weathertop. He never tried to assault where a wizard defended, until the last upon Pelannor Fields when it was too late to change his mind. It also kept him blind to the other possibilities. Having written off the dangers of the kings and champions mortal men, he couldn't conceive that mortal WOMEN could also be courageous, and even deadly. Being assured that men could not end him, he certainly didn't think someone even humbler -- a hobbit -- could bring him harm. ...and so there he is, on the field of victory so far as he knows, not realizing he is facing a woman and being stealthed by a hobbit, secure in his invincibility, and then she says, "...but no man am I!" and then he gets stabbed in the back of knee, and his last thought as Eowyn's sword lunges into his face has to be something like, "Dammit, Glorfindel, best deception in history!" I like to think that Glorfindel's second-sight was aware that the event had occurred, and that the elf-lord laughed out loud: "See, I told you! I told it to you straight, and you never figured it out!" He had played the Witch-king both for the interim (hampering his options), and for the finale.

You might be a bit off. Her journey into the valley of despair started before she met Aragorn, as she watched her “father” slip into dishonorable dotage. Read Gandalf’s words in the houses of healing. “Being born into the body of a woman with a spirit as high and valiant as Eomer her brother,” those were the words Gandalf used, insinuating that in all ways of courage, bravery and honor she was Eomer’s equal. She definitely claimed the most legendary PVP victory in the entire third age.

I've always found Eowyn a fascinating character in the books plus in the movies as well. One of my favorites. I always felt for her unrequited love for Aragorn. But she was a very brave shield maiden warrior in the battle of Pelennor Fields. She was definitely a more well rounded and interesting character in the books than Arwen was. Though I like Arwen she was still a pale imitation of her ancestor Luthien and hardly made an impact in the books. In the movies it was different of course. Anyways all hail Eowyn Shield Maiden of Rohan and Lady of Ithilien.

Eowyn was first conceived of as a wife for Aragorn, though that didn't last long in the writing. And she was always going to be the witch king's slayer. But she was a fully developed and a remarkable and fascinating character. Arwen, on the other hand was a last-minute addition, when the book was almost completed and Tolkein decided the king needed a queen. All the earlier mentions of Arwen were written in and there wasn't really time to develop her more fully. She didn't even exist earlier in Tolkein's mythology.

@@rachelport3723 Thanks for that info. I know a lot about Tolkien's works but I didn't know that his original conception would have had Eowyn becoming Aragorn's wife. Though there would have been the huge problem of Aragorn far out living Eowyn because he was a dunadan. He lived 210 years, so he would have died many decades after her death. Fascinating though.

I read the chapter of Eowyn's healing last night and it kind of made me angry. Nobody could see her hopelessness until it was far too late. Gandalf rebukes Eomer lightly saying he had his glory, his fields, his horses, not seeing that Eowyn did all she could to keep Theoden's spirits up, even then she felt like life was a cage closing and shrinking around her. Then Aragon repeatedly tells her to stay out of the battle because she was a woman. When waking, she admits that she might be healthy but she has no hope. As one who has fought depression, I know what it is like to feel no hope in the world. It is a hideous thing. People only see her killing the Witch-King but nobody sees her hopelessness.

Tolkien leaves nothing out, he weaves into his world, all the various archetypes, and roles which show the complex interplay, of male, and female, and shows us that the least likely outcome, is many times the vital part, and glory of the story. Yay! Thanks! I always felt that when her uncle didn’t want Eowyn to go into battle, but lead the people into Helms Deep, that he was doing the right thing. The people needed to be led to safety, and that is just, if not more important, than just doing battle. 🤷‍♀️. But heck yeah. Just like Nelson said👇. Absolutely.

My favorite LOTR character. I feel so identified with her for many reasons and events in my own life (no, doesn’t include slaying wraiths😂) Eowyn thought that only through great deeds she would feel fulfilled but she discovered that there is glory and joy in a life of compassion. She is truly an excellent model of the potential inside a woman’s heart. Thank you so much for this!!!

Once again beautifully done. Éowyn is one of my favorite characters she is brave and fierce and the story of Faramir and Éowyn always touches my heart. Tolkien wrote their story so deftly. Two hearts healing each other. Only one correction Faramir and Éowyn did not marry in Edoras. They were trothplighted by Éomer. It is a medieval form of becoming engaged. Other than that slight niggle I loved this!

Well not really. Getting married doesn't make a woman any less "powerful". My mom is a "feminist" not them feminazis. And she's had kids and a family and all that for over 16 years. In truth if more female characters WERE like her and less sexist then we'd all be happy

"Sometimes a Hobbit and a spark of courage are all it takes to change the world". THIS is the truth that Gandalf found when he came to the aid of the Shire Folk during the Long Winter. "You have to put a Hobbit in a very tight place before you find out what they're made of". And the Warden of the Houses of Healing: "They are a remarkable race. Very tough in the fibre, I deem", after Aragorn told him that Merry would be fit and able to rise the very next day after the horror he endured.

Excellent work on this video. I would like to suggest something maybe a bit different for a future video of yours. Maybe you could look at music that has been inspired by Tolkien? Bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blind Guardian, Wind Rose and many others have drawn inspiration from Tolkien's work and it might be cool to take a look at? I am not sure how you would go about it but it's just a thought.

Éowyn kicked ass at anything she chose to do (except cooking, if Peter Jackson's deleted scenes are to be believed. Which honestly makes me like her even more, somehow), and made plenty of mistakes along the way to finding her place in the world. I like her a lot.

There were a Wizard, a Dwarf and three Elves present at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. And yet Tolkien chose to give the honor of destroying the mighty Witch-King of Angmar to a 25-6 year old girl from one of the "lesser" races of men, who was also going through suicidal depression. As somebody who has struggled with depression and anxiety in the past, this is something I personally love.
