I wonder if there's a measurable difference between students who get accepted to Oxford vs Cambridge. This (my) theory is hard to explain, but I will try to. I think there are two distinct types of people "inhalers" vs "exhalers" what I mean by this is when you either completely inhale or exhale you get a a weird sensation throughout your body, one feels kind of like if you were sucking an invisible energy and the other one feels almost as if you were pushing it out, which might make you look almost sullen at times. My theory is people unconsciously stay at one of these modes throughout their life and it is shaping their behaviour and personality. Based upon whether you're an "inhaler" or "exhaler" you will have different approach to learning and even your sense of style will be different. What strikes me the most is how strongly "inhale" person defined style is the Oxford building versus Cambridge that clearly looks like it was built for "exhale" kind of people. I know it sounds ridiculous, but try to change your default style of being and you might see what I mean by it. As an "inhaler" you might suddenly see Oxford building as beautiful and as an "exhaler" Cambridge building will all of a sudden look amazing.

Difficult call. Oxford has more to see but more commercialised., however the smaller size of Cambridge has its advantages. . Maybe I would tip the balance to Cambridge but either one is worth a visit.

I work in Oxford but slightly prefer Cambridge as it's smaller, quirkier and more charming. Central Oxford is breathtaking, though.

I didn't understand the suggestion you can't walk across the Bridge of Sighs. I have walked across it in Cambridge many times. Most recently in March this year. Just walked through the College entrance gate, through the courts, crossed the bridge, then walked through the college gardens backing on to the River Cam, then eventually up West Road towards the Sidgwick Sites (Arts & Humanities).

Mmm, I am no doubt biased, being a retired Oxford academic, but having spent some considerable time in both cities, I would suggest that Oxford offers visitors just that something more, as an overall experience, but in the end, it is entirely subjective on individual tastes and expectations :) Oh yes, the Harry Potter 'Z'!!!!!! on the ground outside the Sheldonian Theatre, not the Caledonian, surly ???? Well done !!!

Oxfords way better no doubt

@@humanbeing1776 Well, of course, I am apt to agree !!! However, there is one area in which Cambridge indisputably leads, and that is their exceptionally beautiful and gifted choirs of Kings College and Clare College, which I don`t believe Oxford can match in any meaningful sense, but that is only my opinion of course :)

My daughter graduated from New College Oxford a few years ago, she doesn't speak a word of Latin and neither did most of her buddies except perhaps a few who'd come from private schools, so I think the answer is "No" 🙂

If you can't work out the answer to that, canman, I'd say it's 'academic' for you to find out the answer.

Disappointingly, neither place has anything like an abundance of what we might think of as 'Oxbridge types'. The cities' fame leads to mass international interest from the obvious-minded and the monied, as students and tourists, rather than the quirkily original kinds of people. I doubt it was always like so as much. Think of the great alumni of the 1960s, for instance, even in to the 1990s. Cambridge is regarded as more stunning in its exteriors, Oxford a little more in its interiors (aside from Cambridge's Kings Chapel, of course). Cambridge has a desolate grandeur - desolate as in it feels too quiet when no-one's around. It's like an ancient version of a campus university. Oxford, by contrast, has a true small city life to it. Oxford can, weirdly, feel like the younger university as its architecture is more proto-Victorian (or sometimes actually Victorian, of course), whereas Cambridge feels more Renaissance and Georgian in general.
