The video is good! Thank you! But, I think, your teacher is no worse than the presenter. 1.Sometimes the problem is the students. There are some, who can not understand this topic in his/her lifetime! 2.This topic cannot be clarified definitively, there will always be a lot of unclear things. In particular, due to the vagueness of the key phrase in the presenter's explanation "central=essential=information". It depends on speaker's and listener's individual interpretation.

A comma indicates a smaller break than a full stop. Some writers think of a comma as a soft pause-a punctuation mark that separates words, clauses, or ideas within a sentence.

Isn't this essential? A. My ankle is still giving me trouble. B. What's the problem? (Reason?) A. I broke it last summer. (And this one could have a different response ) Sometimes I just can't agree with grammar when it comes to essential and non-essential. Thank you for the vídeo!❤
@oxfordenglishnowАй бұрын
You're absolutely right; context matters a lot in deciding what's essential or non-essential in grammar and conversation! In your example: A. My ankle is still giving me trouble. B. What's the problem? (Reason?) A. I broke it last summer. Here, the response "I broke it last summer" provides key information that explains the ongoing problem, so it feels essential to the conversation because it's a direct answer to "What's the problem?" In casual or everyday speech, essential and non-essential details can feel subjective, depending on how much information the listener expects. Grammar guidelines sometimes label additional details as "non-essential" if they don't change the main meaning. But in conversation, any detail that adds clarity or context often feels essential to fully understand the situation. So, even if grammar rules would call it "extra," it might still be necessary to include in order to avoid confusion. Let me know if you have any more tricky examples to discuss-I love diving into these! 😊

Hi, so I am quite curious at 6:11. As it mentioned at the beginning of the video that defining a relative clause is to provide essential information. So as to understand what it referred to. However, the sentence" This is George whom I met last year." does not make sense to me as the object is George is already defined when you use "This" with a Noun you have already determined what you referred to. Because of it, I think that sentence is a non-defining relative clause and require a comma. I think the correct sentence would be " This is George, whom I met last year." or "The boy who I met last year is George.

The first sentence "The friend that I want to introduce you to is away this weekend" is the correct one. why? it is a defining/ identifying relative clause pointing basically to the specific friend talking about. It is giving an essential information about a friend which is being referred to. Without the adjective clause used in the above sentences, the noun is incomplete, but we have our defining/ identifying relative clause which has identified the actual friend the speaker is talking about. Additionally, it was said that the demonstrative pronoun "that" should not be preceded by any objective case of pronoun. Correct me if I am wrong.

It was such a clear and beautiful video! May I ask something about the usage of when and where ? when we use them in non-defining relative clauses, does it need to specify place or time in every sentence? or 'The park ,where we played yesterday, is near my house.' is this sentence can also be non-defining too? If it says the Central Park, then I am sure it is a non defining but this point is confusing for me. Thank u so much for now and have a nice day!
@oxfordenglishnowАй бұрын
Great question! The distinction between defining and non-defining relative clauses can indeed feel tricky, especially with words like where and when. Let's break this down: 1. Defining vs. Non-Defining Relative Clauses A defining relative clause provides essential information about the noun it modifies. Without it, the sentence’s meaning becomes unclear. A non-defining relative clause adds extra, non-essential information. You can remove it, and the sentence would still make sense. 2. Regarding "The park, where we played yesterday, is near my house": This sentence can be a non-defining relative clause because the commas signal that the information about playing there yesterday is not crucial to identify the park. The meaning of the sentence: You already know which park I mean; I'm just giving you some additional information about it. If you said: "The park where we played yesterday is near my house," (no commas) → This becomes a defining relative clause because the clause is identifying which park you’re talking about. 3. Does it always need to specify a particular time or place? Not necessarily! But for non-defining relative clauses, the noun you're referring to (like "The park" in this case) is typically something specific or already clear in the context. That’s why it feels more natural to use proper nouns (like "Central Park") or something that’s already understood in the conversation. Example: "Central Park, where we played yesterday, is famous for its beauty." → Non-defining, because everyone knows Central Park, and the information about playing there is extra. "The park, where we played yesterday, is near my house." → Also non-defining if you and the listener already know which park is being discussed. If it's unclear which park is meant, then you'd use a defining clause without commas: "The park where we played yesterday is near my house." Summary: Use commas for non-defining clauses; they're like "extra info." Non-defining clauses usually refer to specific or already identified places/times. Both your example with "The park" and one with "Central Park" can work as non-defining, depending on context.
