Spoke about Jose always having the best players. But I think that underplays what he achieved with Porto

@@liamio2802 better than at Spurs, haha. Redknapp would get better results than Jose at Spurs at the moment.

Totally agree you get more out of people by telling them they are good than otherwise, the power of words is no wonder to some.

Disagree with Harry. It's not just about the best players, or it being reliance on the players, which is an easy way to absolve blame. Alot of the time it's about managers not getting the best out of the players they do have. Sometimes it can be simply things like stubbornly refusing to play someone (or play them in their best position) who is clearly beneficial to the team because the manager doesn't trust them, or refusing to play a system that gets the best out of the team. Sometimes managers let their egos get the best of them and start tinkering like madmen or refuse to do the obvious things that work because they want to look like geniuses. Some managers, and this is especially a problem with British managers culturally, are also unable to actually coach a philosophy into their teams, they think it's all about buying players, making them run alot in training, and just throwing them on the pitch relying purely on player ability, instead of really working towards a plan and a system/style of play that requires in depth teaching and drilling players. Managers like Guardiola, Klopp, Wenger, etc, will instill a style of play into their players that reflects their philosophy and is vastly different to what others do. Others who are tactical masters like Mourinho and Benitez will drill their players extremely well to be organised and solid. Whereas managers like Allardyce or Pardew or Bruce will just shout at their players to lump it into the box. There's a big difference. Occasionally you can see that big difference a good manager makes vs a bad manager with the exact same group of players when there's a managerial change.

Rhoombrp complete nonsense mate. Allardyce is someone who is extremely tactically minded and drills his players well. You'll find that the technique you're deriding went out of top flight football long ago.

Rhoombrp nonsense, your theories are out of date. In any case Alladyce was one of the first managers to take stat analysis (game index data for example) to the nth/PhD level. Besides, Harry did say it had a lot (notice how I spelt “a lot”) to do with how you treat players - which in turn partly translates to playing the players in the their best positions and with the best system to get the very best from them.
