Stephen was the 'heart' in everything he did with Ricky. It's obvious from looking at the stuff Ricky has done post their split, that the emotional punch which went hand in hand with the cutting comedy was missing.
@MichaelLeightonsKarlyPilkboys6 жыл бұрын
Derek felt too clumsy. The sentimentality in The Office and Extras felt like a natural consequence of the story, whereas Derek seemed a maudlin attempt at replicating the same thing. I still like some of Ricky's solo stuff, but Stephen gave their work some acidity and sophistication.

That’s a very interesting idea, I hadn’t realised that but wouldn’t be surprised that the very poignant aspects of their work is down to Merchant.

Merchant managed to articulate his views on comedic offence better than Ricky managed to over 30 episodes of self repeating podcasts. I love Ricky but man he’s really begun to grate recently.

In my opinion, I think Steve Merchant is funny. I think he should do some stand up, radio work, theatre productions, TV show writing, voice over work or podcasts.

How could anyone possibly find anything on An Idiot Abroad offensive? Other than someone not understanding why certain landmarks are popular and aren't impressed by them, that's just an opinion about something that's objective as it is, what in that show is offensive?
@jamesgabany16 жыл бұрын
As if people need a good reason to be offended nowadays.

I know. It's like they're just attention seekers looking to cause trouble or grief to hard working people because they get a kick out of being acknowledged by someone.

The more one endures these truly surreal times in which we now sadly live the more one reaslises that "offensive" has increasingly become a cypher/euphemism for 'too close to the truth' more often than not. Indeed, that's certainly true of Karl Pilkington declaring numerous worldly 'wonders' to be dumps, rubbish, or just plain underwhelming via 'An Idiot Abroad'! It's 'offensive' to some expressly because he's (arguably) correct in his forthright observations...

The Office (both UK & USA) was amazingly one of the best of it genre that I have ever seen. As Stephen said, they don’t always translate well, and the irony in the USA version was so surprising given that we don’t think they get it. I have watched both versions several times and I feel qualified to say it because of that fact and also I have seen a LOT of comedy given I am 70, not 16 as most commenters on here seem to be. ( side note…Mrs. Brown’s Boys is the unfunniest…it depends on offensive language to get laughs.)

One of the few entertainers who's as funny unscripted as he is when he's written something. He's an absolute genius when it comes to writing, particularly the timing. Gervais is fantastic too, and in my opinion, plays the character better than Steve does (his stand-up), but there's no way the office would have taken off if one didn't have the other. Karl on the other hand....easily the funniest bloke on the planet, and all totally unintentional
@PrivateMinus90FTW4 жыл бұрын
@Queenie QC You can tell how hard Steve worked at comedy. He's obviously got a natural talent for it. But it's clear he's really studied comedians and writers.

Stephen was the carbon to Ricky's iron. Separately they are very different elements - together they are steel. Ricky makes up the bulk of the final product, but Stephen is what gives the result sharpness and its strength without which it is just a fat lump taking up valuable real estate.
@MichaelLeightonsKarlyPilkboys6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Comparing The Office, which has genuinely nuanced moments, with Derek, which seems clumsy and mawkish, underlines Stephen Merchant's contributions. Gervais has good, entertaining ideas, but they the lack finesse and lasting quality The Office and Extras has.
@catlikethief60126 жыл бұрын
Ace Sul Any evidence to back that up or did you just make it up as you went along ? I suspect the latter.
@catlikethief60126 жыл бұрын
Ace Sul You stated your opinion as though it was factual, I’m simply asking for the evidence to back these claims of yours. However, like before stated, I doubt it is in existence. Idiot.
@acesul88116 жыл бұрын
Well obviously it isn't factual that Steve Merchant is a lump of carbon and Ricky Gervais is a lump of iron ore. Nor is it factual that The Office is a literal steel sword forged from the fusion of iron and carbon. You have seen through my lies. Well done. You have exposed my hidden agenda of using two separate elements that are stronger together as a metaphor to describe the Merchant\Gervais relationship. In no way is Ricky literally an Iron man.
@catlikethief60126 жыл бұрын
Ace Sul You truly have exposed yourself here to be what can only be described as a complete idiot. Of course I was not referencing the metaphor you were making in my comment. Apologies, however I thought that would have been obvious. Apparently not. Never mind, let’s take it at a slower pace for you. My original comment regarding lack of evidence was, in actuality, relating to your comment regarding Gervais being the main writer of the two with Merchant only adding precision to the work. I personally have never read or heard these claims and was inquiring into whether or not you did in fact have any substantial evidence to back these claims. Hope this was easy enough to read.
