Penrose is a remarkable genius. Back in the 70's and 80's when I was first deciding to become a physicist and mathematician it was Penrose and Feynman that were the biggest and brightest lights. This man has led a life of genius. He is in his eighties and he is still publishing original and highly creative research. I was fortunate to have one of his doctoral students become an associate professor at my university while I was in graduate school. We had numerous discussions about Penrose and his unstoppable originality. He said it was a phenomenal thing to watch him work and create - possessing such humility and calmness but with continual deep insights on an order that put him firmly in the gallery of the greats.

This is a speech with varied highlights. To hear spacetime curvature and black holes discussed by a luminary of these theoretical concepts is one. On a more earthly scale, it is engaging when he describes the biosphere by ticking off such elements as the sun, thermonuclear reactions, photosynthesis, plants, animals and us, concluding "And that's how it all works."

I think this is definitely one of the better CCC talks. Dr. Penrose, (IMO), has a tendency to speak in ways where sometimes, it's a little hard to follow the 'phrases and sentences' in his spoken 'paragraphs', and taken together with his habit of sometimes switching slides back and forth quickly as he speaks 'off the cuff', he can be hard to follow. THIS talk, (IMO), he really 'hits his stride', and aside from a little problem with showing slides toward the very end, the entire talk is VERY well paced, and well served by his transparencies and other graphics.

Aside from his knowledge, imagination, and training, he is clearly and obviously a highly moral and pleasant man, so it's petty for those of you commenters to harp, get your knickers tied all in knots, for stuff that doesn't conform to your narrow, pinched ideas. Wonderful lecture. I need to learn more about the crossover threshold and the inverse which triggers or ignites another big bang. I don't have a physics background, so it's hard for me to understand. I'll watch more talks by Sir Roger on KZbin and I'm sure to get a better understanding. I love the fact that his CCC does not point to a singular point. I also really like the explanation for the circular patterns found being clumping resulting from supermassive black hole collisions, if I've got that right.

one thing bothers me - when the high frequency photons from the sun hit the earth and are re-emitted as more lower energy infra red photons, that is an increase in entropy - so if at the end of the aeon nothing is left but photons - how can those photons have no entropy - hmmm i must watch the lecture again and it will eventually become clear to me :-)
@matonmongo

I believe Roger's mentioned in other talks that he means maximum entropy would be reached at the end of the universe when only photons remain and even all the black holes have evaporated. So there'd be no remaining mass since photons are considered massless. And regardless whether talking energy or mass, entropy is basically a measure of the level of 'dispersal'.

Utterly brilliant and imaginative. Reviving Hawking's original idea of information loss to "renormalize" the entropy of the end of an Eon to that of the beginning of the next is fascinating. It is a tenuous and web-like cosmological story, but that's the nature of cosmology. A question though: it seems to me that, beyond choices among various approaches, the only really _dubious_ "roll of the dice" in Penrose's approach here, conceivable and not implausible, though not anticipated (and certainly not predicted) by current understanding, is the idea that _mass itself_ ultimately disappears, a process other than particle decay. It gets rid of those pesky leftover electrons, but is it motivated? Strangely enough, as exotic as this proposal is, it coheres as a whole more beautifully than does the notion of disappearing mass it presupposes.

Correct, Inflation was before the Grand Expand. Inflation of Dielectric energy, terminate to terminate. Then, Dielectric energy crystallized into Dielectric voidence field/Magnetism. This is why the Universe is homogeneous. The Scalable Aether Universe was expanded after the grand expand of Dielectric energy.

I might be wrong but i think he dealt with that in passing when describing that the inverse of cosmological constant is the parameter of relevance in the new universe, and that this prevents the situation you describe. He only briefly mentioned this during the questions at the end. I may be wrong however so if anyone else heard his mention of using the cosmological constant as the scaling factor in this universe but once the infinity boundary is crossed over into the next big bang the reciprocal or inverse of the cosmological constant is the scaling factor, they might be able to answer your question and confirm whether my rather intuitive answer is correct.

im completely out of my depth but what i think he is saying is, eventually in the distant future there will be no matter to keep time, no mass left to fill space. And with nothing left to occupy space or keep the time, the scale of time and space becomes irrelevant. kind of like if you open 3d modeling software and make a hollow sphere. Whether the sphere has a 3 meter diameter or 3 billion kilometer diameter, if you zoom out enough they are both tiny points of nothing. scale has no meaning. that point somehow becomes the next big bang and lingering gravitational waves from the previous Aeon imprint themselves upon new matter and influence the clumping and distribution of the next Aeon's universe.

Does the gravitational waves from two black holes colliding match up with the matter lost due to its loss of the information of the gravity? Also once the universe is very boring, post popping supermassive black holes, does the loss of matter other than photons cause the loss of any gravity present in the universe and then that allows another big bang? Minus the rapid expansion of course.

Halton Arp found a lot of evidence that red-shift is not caused simply by the doppler effect. Some observations of quasars also imply that red-shift can be intrinsic to young star formation. This is my favourite Penrose lecture. One question, I get that with the expansion of the universe, that eventually black holes will be hotter than the surrounding space time, and therefore, according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, they should start radiating. It makes perfect sense for what we know of physics, traditional systems etc. But, given that our current understanding of physics breaks down at singularities, such as the type in a blackhole, is it proven, that the 2nd law applies? How can we apply current physics, to a system, where physics breaks down? I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain that to my dumb brain. Thx, and Roger, you rock!
@schmetterling4477
@schmetterling4477 3 жыл бұрын
There is no singularity inside black holes. Every black hole is made of matter, it's just matter in an extremely deep gravitational well. The second law is simply the definition of temperature. What Roger Penrose says here is, in classical terms, a rescaling of temperature. What to us is extremely cold will become extremely hot to the inhabitants of the next eon.
@victorblaer

@@schmetterling4477 I'm not sure the consensus agrees with you. I'm familiar with the thermodynamic and statistical mechanics of the 2nd law. Per General Relativity, it is a finite amount of mass crammed into a zero point of space. +NGC6144 Others have brought Clarity on why this model is flawed, however, as the Black Holes collide and evaporate, logic distates so does gravity. Neo Pagan makes a comment which immediately came to mind, and perhaps I misread him. The statement: "Infinite regeneration of "the" sequential constant ...The "big bang" ...one of many" is incoherent (assuming I am not reading you wrong Neo). The ?'s asked by the audience continued to come back to what Penrose deflects. A constant theme of "how do you get from one to the other?" (compressed infinites, photons who do not experience time, in a state of null time) evaporated Black Holes, NONE, not in any way, shape or form, nullify infinite regress. If the man who IMHO is the brightest and who I affectionately call, The "one with the mind of math," rivaling Hilbert, continues to Cling to this model, he is no better than his former friend whose last Novel so rightly demolished. Hawking's the Grande Design, a claptrap, of "Philosophy is dead" jam packed with Philosophy, and sprinkled with Witten's useless attempt to unify the 5 ST's, by adding an 1th dimension and calling it M-Theory, or the Multiverse. Shoddy math, unobservable and cannot be falsified. As Penrose and over 70% in Physics so exclaim, (what I have dubbed) "The Argument from Star Trek" is a claptrap of nonsense, and (quoting Penrose and so many more) does not even amount to a theory, but imaginative Metaphysics. To anyone who believes information survives in a Singularity, I dare to comment on such a fantasy. THINK QUANTUM. Or, have you discovered Tachyons? if Penrose does not stop talking about "playing games" with equations and making veiled assertions that "Theoretical" Compressed infinites, somehow led to initial causation, well, it would explain, although this was done in 2005 and I have more of an interest in some of his other theories, not once in any book, or lecture, does he even make an attempt to refute that which cannot be refuted. The Borde, Guth, Vilenkin theorem. Penrose here is still playing ball in the Classical model. Whether one believes or does not, in a quantum model, you simply cannot ignore the BGV and hope it will go away. An Eternal Universe, while related to the claptrap of M-Theory nonsense, Penrose points out on the Quantum Vacuum for one thing, either remove yourself from the Classical model (and the theory falls apart) and move on to the Quantum view, which he rightly knows is nonsense. Above all, stop dancing around Infinite regress. Before the Big banH (Hawking's Singularity), there was not one person like Carroll and Krauss who call "nothing" and then imagine it as something, it's worse than Magic. There was pure negation, no time, no matter,no energy, no space and NO PHOTONS. BGV shows this to be true even if the nonsense posited in M-Theory is correct. All the universes had t have finite beginning in time. Most know why M-Theory was created, it began with a book written by an atheist (I forget who) called "just six numbers." Time for a breather and pop in a search on conformal cyclic cosmology 2015 and see, how and if it has progressed in any way, I can;t think of any, but Penrose is smarter than I.

If the cosmological constant is dark energy, which can exist only by a coupling with gravity, then the question is does dark energy increase in entropy, which would carry gravity in entropy along with it? You must have gravity to have dark energy and vice versa. Energy of any type is not supposed to degenerate, hence dark energy and dark matter continue robustly and so would gravity with it.

Extremely interesting stuff to ponder 🤔. Perhaps I missed it, but is there a way for these cycles to wind down completely? For if not, and they agonize on eternally, then we must repeat this veil of tears again and again. Though recognizing that each cycle is different from others, eternity implies (to me) eventual repetition, and what a waste of energy that would be. Surely you have covered this point, and I just missed it. Perhaps it's that a bit of stuff (note, I'm being safe here using "stuff") is lost with each cycle until there is only a whimper eventually, a petered out universe. A mere soap bubble. As an aside, if this is a good representation of what happens, it must not be acting alone but joined by fellow travelers, like exotic self-generating flowers popping up until.....until when? Ah, yes....it is weirder than we can imagine.

I have always preferred the Steady State theory(S.S.) of Fred Hoyle, Bondi and Gold, to the Big Bang theory. When the Big Bang was found not to make sense, another thing called "inflation" was invented to botch its flaws. On the other hand, S.S. has no flaws within itself. Those seeking to disprove it had to resort to something outside the S.S. :- quasars, which because of their ultra high red-shifts, were said to be all situate at least 3 billion light years away, and none nearby to Earth. Recent research , however, showed that high red-shifts have in fact no relation to the distances of quasars. Red-shifts are only related to velocities, and not to distances. Thus it was originally not justifiable to use quasars to disprove S.S..
@Rationalist001
@Rationalist001 6 жыл бұрын
It's fair enough to say 'I have always preferred the Steady State theory', but if you're going to do so it might be worth noting that it is now rejected by the vast majority of cosmologists, astrophysicists and astronomers, as the observational evidence points to a hot Big Bang cosmology with a finite age of the universe, which the steady state model does not predict
@Rationalist001

The existence of quasars and the cosmic microwave background radiation both pretty much destroy SS.
@Rationalist001
@Rationalist001 6 жыл бұрын
You also mention 'those seeking to disprove it had to resort to something outside the SS'... but of course this is what all theories do. Steady State had to re-invent itself in 1993 as Quasi--steady State in order to introduce new mechanics (little bangs) to account for observation, and further adaptations to the model were made to match the observed acceleration of expansion. To date, several flaws and discrepancies in the QSS model have been documented and there have been no answers forthcoming from its proponents.

A lot of exotic particles probably went extinct do to the Big Bang. Particles that could time travel and combine with their past selves could have existed. Doing this could make it possible to gain mass. When we think about matter and anti matter. If we had matter that could time travel then it would be the things that survived total annihilation. Before the Big Bang Time=Distance. After the Big Bang Distance=Time. Before the Big Bang no other movement except for time movement. Once distance=time is added the particles that do time travel miss when trying to combine with its past self and the mechanism that triggers the time travel is disabled. If a Big Crunch is in the future of our universe maybe it will have something to do with the past of the particles that exist today. If this happens I suppose the mechanism will re-engage and begin the process leading to another Big Bang. If the past particles are quantumly tugging the expansion may someday slow down.

The Big Bang is caused by a reversible, adiabatic phase change from a maximum energy phase of spacetime into pure radiation consisting of grand-unified bosons and gravitons. This all occurs as flat spacetime during the Planck Epoch so that an Inflation event is not needed to create flatness and homogeneity. The initial phase of spacetime is characterized by the Planck density and the highest attainable Hubble constant for flat spacetime. This initial state is flat and homogenous and it may be a perfect crystalline state devoid of defects, i.e. a low entropy state. The properties of the maximum energy phase of spacetime are given by the Planck units (See Wikipedia) which explains the origin of the fundamental constants of nature as simply reflecting the thermodynamic properties of spacetime. The maximum energy phase of spacetime forms the core of dark stars (black holes). The existence of a core allows the dark star to grow faster than it evaporates eventually reaching a critical size where it de-stabilizes and this starts the rapid expansion we call the "Big Bang". Spacetime is quantized by Planck volumes and its expansion is driven by the creation of new spacetime quanta. The rate of spacetime volume-quanta creation depends on its energy density. In this way all universe systems are the same in their basic histories and their bulk thermodynamic properties. Each universe produces billions or more of the seeds that create future offspring universes. The growth of a seed probably takes several trillion years. This multiverse system is created by a parent dark star that may form from the collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate of the ground state phase of spacetime, i.e. dark energy as the Cosmological constant. In this picture an infinite number of eternal multiverses exist within an infinite flat four dimensional spacetime which has the ground state energy density.

sirivella madhu impossible. this violates perhaps the most fundamental rule of the universe--the conservation of energy. the thing about zero point energy, is that it wouldn't be the zero point energy any more if you could extract energy from it. let me say that again, this time in a different way: the zero point is the lowest energy state in the universe...taking energy away from it would mean that it is no longer the lowest energy state anymore.
@sirivellamadhuphotos
@sirivellamadhuphotos 7 жыл бұрын
but what I think is that, the universe can generate itself then the only way that can be generated is from nothing like 0 = +1 -1 and the +1 is what we see and the -1 is mysterious one like antimatter and something like that. what do you think about that in this case, the conservation of energy might take a different form. thanks for your reply.

According to Hindu mythology, the universe was created with a sound: “Om.” It’s a syllable that contains within it everything that ever was and everything that will be. When the Arecibo telescope is pointed at the space between stars, it hears a faint hum. Astronomers call that the “cosmic microwave background.” It’s the residual radiation of the Big Bang, the explosion that created the universe fourteen billion years ago. But you can also think of it as a barely audible reverberation of that original “Om.” That syllable was so resonant that the night sky will keep vibrating for as long as the universe exists. When Arecibo is not listening to anything else, it hears the voice of creation. Ted Chiang, ‘The Great Silence’.

My oh my does this man Bumble so much of the time away. His "old school" learning really shows by HAND WAVING, drawing pictures and excluding math to explain the early universe. I have never heard this man's name much and when it was rarely mentioned outside of the U.K. (reminiscent of Tim Henman) no respect was conveyed, nor are any of his ideas taken seriously and it totally shows why. His analysis, if it qualifies as one, reminds me of how a 5th grader would tackle these issues.

“ We can unify all through the understanding that everything consists of bits of information, though that raises the question of where these bits come from.” - Vlatko Vedral My information theory answers Professor Vedral's question - “...where did these bits come from?” HOW THE UNIVERSE EMERGED FROM THE VOID What Caused the Big Bang? Something from nothing. “Everything is information” - Vlatko Vedral James Rushing 6.30.16 LB, CA This Creation Theory shows how information was first created; how law, existence, energy, matter, time and space, emerged from the Void and created the Universe. THE LAW The first law of identity: Identity Precedes Existence. An identity must have two or more attributes to exist - an existent must be something before it is. EXISTENCE The Void had three attributes: the Void was necessary, sufficient and potentially the Universe, therefore, the Void had an Identity, and so, the Void had existence. ENERGY Upon having existence, the Void combined with the force of its identity and created a new and unique identity - the second law of identity. The second law of identity: every existent has an identity and the force of its identity. The Void, the Force of it's Identity and the First and Second Laws of Identity were the first Identities to be created. Third law of identity Now, the Void, the force of its identity and the first two laws of identity combined and created a new and unique identity - the third law of identity. Third law of identity: no two identities may occupy the same location. Every identity seeks to maintain its identity. This law is the source of the first expansion. Matter Next, these five identities combined to create the fourth law of identity. Fourth law of identity: two or more identities may combine to create a new identity. Time Next, these six identities combined to create the fifth law of identity. Fifth law of identity: time is created to “complete” each creation cycle. Space Space does not exist and never did. What seems to be space is the field of information bits that expanded after the big bang. How quantum information emerged from nothing. These were the first seven identities to exist: the void, the force of its identity, the first, second, third, fourth and fifth laws of identity. These seven, unique identities, combined, according to the fourth law of identity, to create an eighth, new and unique identity; then, these eight combined to create a ninth; and these nine combined to create a tenth, unique identity, etc. Where a=the Void, b=the force of the void's Identity, c=first law of Identity, d=second law, e=third law, f=fourth law, g=fifth law, h=new existent, i=new existent, etc. a+b=c>a+b+c=d>a+b+c+d=e>a+b+c+d+e=f>a+b+c+d+e+f=g>a+b+c+d+e+f+g=h>a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h=i>a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h+i=j>a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h+i+j=k>etc. This Creation of Information Mechanism “cycled” for billions or trillions of years creating a “field of information” that expanded with each cycle, creating our Universe as a continuous “tape” of information. THE BIG BANG The Information Creation Mechanism filled the Universe to a maximum size and density, and then collapsed to a point of maximum density, and with a Big Bang, exploded, creating the second expansion of information, this time with “bits of information,” each “bit” containing all the information and energy necessary to create matter, the cosmos, and life, according to the Laws of Identity. LAWS OF IDENTITY First law of identity: identity precedes existence. Second law of identity: every existent has an identity and the force of its identity. Third law of identity: no two identities may occupy the same location, or, every identity seeks to maintain its location. Fourth law of identity: two or more identities may combine to create a new identity. Fifth law of identity : time is created to combine identities to create new identities . the universe is in a constant state of combining. creation takes time. IMPLICATIONS Everything is information Everything is information is the Theory Of Everything A is A, Existence Exists. What a thing is, determines what it does - Cause and Effect. The Laws of Identity are Universal. Information is Identity. The Law of Identity, A=A , is also known as the Law of non-contradiction and the Law of the Excluded Middle. A=A is the fundamental equation, and the source of Reason, Logic, Science, and, the source of Spiritually, Truth, Love, Freedom and Art; which are the values that create the deep, underlying unity of all that exists. Information, combining and recombining, creating new information, according to the Laws Of Identity, is “the creation mechanism that created the universe.” The Laws Of Identity control creation, design, evolution, and the now; making the Universe self-creating, self-contained and self-explaining. The Force of Identity created the Laws of Physics that built the Universe and created life. Life was followed by consciousness and modern humans. The Force of Identity was the First Force to be created, and is the creator of the Known Forces that created and govern the Universe. They are, in order of creation, the Force of Identity/the Electromagnetic Force, the Strong Force, the Weak Force, and the Force of Gravity. Matter was created after the Big Bang, when the “Bits of Information” combined in all possible ways after the Big Bang. This was the Second Expansion. There was a first and second expansion. One before the Big Bang and one after. The Laws Of Identity are suited for life because they are the same Laws Of Identity that created life. The Force Of Identity can be explained mathematically by an equation: A=A . This equation, A=A, allowed the discovery of physics as a way to know and apply the Laws Of Identity. The Void and the Force of its Identity combined and created the Universe. The Universe and the Force of its Identity combined and created the cosmos. Life emerged from the combining of the cosmos with the force of the cosmos. Mind evolved from the ceaseless combining of life with existence according to the Third Law of Identity. Modern man appeared, not by accident, but by the Laws of Identity, created by the Void and the Force Of Its Identity. A=A is the first equation and the Universal Constant. The Cosmos, Life and Consciousness can be explained by the same equation, A=A, since they are a creation of the same Laws of Identity. Understanding math is natural and crucial to human survival because math and humans are a creation of the same Law Of Identity. We are all one with the Universe and the Creator of the Universe, because all that exists has been created by the same Laws of Identity. The big bang is THEORY that's been de-bunked...in all actuality that's the moment when they turned on the hologram and everything came to life in this realm. the even bigger question is, who turned on the program? where's the control room and who's running the program from the otherside? does the program have an end date? If GAS BONDING is a fact , Gravity/ Black Holes are not ! All downward falling motion including Newtons apple begins when rising gas molecules becomes trapped gas molecules, known as GAS BONDING, which take on a state of solid mass, blocking out it's electrons motion, it's fire power, thus becomes ENERGY LOCK lifeless gas molecules, and falls downward in real time, following it's electrons unlimited potential velocity at the speed of light, which connects with the earth ENERGY CONSERVATION SYSTEM, establishing a downward falling path for trapped lifeless gas molecules/solid objects only. Equating the above fact with the physical universe same as Einstein E = MC2 equates with the physical universe. E = ENERGY = MM = MOLECULE MOTION = Molecules in motion within star flames earth gases birds and balloons plains and rockets, even us humans rise from molecules in motion creating an ENERGY FLOW , the ruling force of the universe. M = MASS = GB = GAS BONDING = Gas BONDING take on a state of solid mass, with trapped gas molecules falling downward as solids. C2 = LIGHT SPEED = E = ELECTRONS = Electrons Unlimited Potential Velocity at the speed of light, connects with the earth ENERGY CONSERVATION SYSTEM, establishing a downward falling path for trapped lifeless gas molecules/solid objects only. This they should've known ! Gravity is a mythical concept mentally applied, with guaranteed result to it's point of origin, the BRAIN.

Ok many ways using donut shaped or ice cream coned shaped permeant shaped magnets will collect surrounding energy in the field, so when you shoot or spread a beam or frequency in, the output is increased being usable as a beam or spread out using a prism ,then collect the energy many ways so you can use and charge a battery making any system usable closed loop and usable for you and the cycle of the earth as well, and not pissing of the big company's we can use. Same side planets we could build space stations and a huge power sending wall as well as safe underground living mining dying planets this is why we need new tech because no planet last forever longer is better . We can build simple things right now ,We are like babies every being comes from the same we have many older and younger brothers and sisters we was once being mixed made and taught we young humans worked for our elders then elder laws stepped in letting us develop we are like babies growing ,every man and women has done wrong making slaves of ourselves we all can change making a better way ,we don't have to give up evil but we already have plenty of evil we need forever solutions happiness is a higher energy for everything, Just don't forget positives of all foods.
