You know coming out of the US Marine Corps sometimes it was hard to think of ourselves as being "advanced" in many ways. We got the hand me downs, the guys I worked with were goofs, and logistics were all kinds of fucked up. Then I worked with other NATO militaries and see stuff like this and it really made me realize how much better our gear really is compared to most countries -- even if it is considered old and outdated by US military standards. Also the cohesiveness and overall professionalism in the field really shined through.

It makes me think of when we in the US military started transitioning from Cold War era stuff into the more modern gear around the early-mid 2000s. It took a while for more of the new stuff to be more widely issued. I still remember when the new gear was only being issued to units preparing to deploy overseas to OEF and later OIF. In the USMC I still remember seeing the weird mixing of new and old equipment and uniform items. Seeing the Russians go through that same, slow phasing in of new equipment isn't surprising.

I had a depressing thought the other day. Being a groundpounder has always been the job that has soldiers in the most "suck" but in the modern age, it is truly incomprehensible the amount of infantry deaths there would be if engaging a peer force. Weapon system lethality has reached a level of efficiency that scares the crap out of me. Airburst smart munitions fired from armored vehicles that render defilade pointless, thermals/NVGs that make camouflage/night cover obsolete, AGMs that have an error radius of mere meters. If the engagements such as the recent Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict or Taliban offensives are indicators of fighting against an enemy with near or similar capabilities as yours, entire platoons can be wiped out in the blink of an eye. There's no hiding, only praying that your side's countermeasures can hopefully save your life and prevent instant vaporization.
@nguyenbaokhiem67283 жыл бұрын
yep, it sure is. I can remember the first time watching the combat footage of Azeri drones absolutely obliterating entire Armenian armored battalions and infantry platoons (as well as the statistics of the casualties suffered), which absolutely blew my mind of how devastating a near-peer conflict could be.
@justnukeit81283 жыл бұрын
It is for that very reason that many see the future of infantry combat relegated to subterranian and dense urban environments. The surface has become hyper lethal, so much so that in order to survive the infantry simple cannot fight in the open.
@wigon3 жыл бұрын
@@justnukeit8128 That's actually nothing new. Troops caught on in the open during WWII had artillery called on them immediately. People forget how incredibly bloody WWII was. They may have not had smart munitions, but the artillery back then was PLENTY accurate as were the snipers. Any modern war with a near-peer enemy would resemble the casualty levels of WWII. As far as weapons like showcased in the recent Armenian /Azerbajan war, the precision guided artillery strikes largely depended on drones. Drones would likely be rendered obsolete due to intense jamming via electronic warfare units. Likewise, smart artillery munitions designed to penetrate the top armor of tanks can often be defeated by the simple edition of roof-top ERA blocks. Things like airburst munitions are also nothing new. They were used in WWII to deadly effect. However that's why infantry train to build overhead cover using timbers and sandbags. Our Army also has HEMMT based (and trailer mounted) mobile concrete mixers that allow for rapid construction of thick concrete bunkers and other field fortifications. That combined with laser jamming systems, IR jammers, active protection systems, and a whole host of other counter-measures and it would boil down to which side had the best leaders, the best soldiers, and most importantly, the political willpower to win the fight. Getting air superiority would also be critical. That is why Russian forces invest heavily in a very wide range of air-defense systems including cutting-edge self-propelled anti-air artillery gun systems (SPAAGs) that use IR detection systems (instead of radar) coupled with digital AI technology that make them difficult to jam or decoy. Likewise their huge array of short, medium, and long range surface to air missile systems are formidable. So yeah... that would be a horrific war between the U.S. and Russia or the U.S. and China (who also have many advanced systems). Nobody wants to see that. Besides most U.S. military folks actually like Russian military personnel and have a lot of respect for them (and vice-versa) as both sides did a good job killing terrorists in Syria.

Don't even have to look at those conflicts, the gulf war showed how deadly conventional warfare is - 300 (mostly blue on blue) killed vs 20k-50k killed. The 6Б45 clearly has MOLLE to attach those pouches and other gear so why use the 6Ш117 LBV? We clearly see with the desert digital loadout that the 6Б45 can attach all that gear so what’s the point to adding more layers? As someone who owns the Greyshop replica 6Б45 I’ve found no issues running the pouches directly mounted and to me at least the weight is similarly distributed whether I’m wearing 6Ш117 or direct mounting it. But of course that’s just my personal experience and there’s probably some obvious detail I’m missing.
@andrewblackmore31503 жыл бұрын
Versatility basically. If say, at a rest stop you wanted to remove the equipment, you can do so but still remain protected, when you have the pouches attached to the armour if you remove your equipment you also remove your protection. Also there could be situations where you need to lose the armour to increase mobility, to scout for instance. But in certain situations they also do indeed mount the pouches direct onto the armour, usually in fairly static roles such as Peacekeeping or MPs.

Some of the Ratnik kit's shortcomings were noted in Ukraine, particularly the EMR camouflage pattern, which didn't really suit the terrain that well. What the MOD did was controversial but very smart IMHO: they issued soldiers with the standard issue kit that was available and gave the troops the green light to buy their own kit as they deemed necessary. The troops ended up massively buying earless or semi-earless helmets, corset body armor, and switched to multicam-like camo patterns that better suited the terrain. The MOD took note and introduced the "VKBO 3.0" uniform pattern and "Strelok" PPE in late 2023. They are currently issuing a batch of 25 thousand of the latter to the troops at the front, and they're a significant upgrade over the Ratnik kit.

@@Nathan-Roman point well taken, truth be told it was initially criticized for being too specific to a certain terrain and had to undergo several tweaks over the years. The latest version contains a bit of coyote brown to make it more versatile. Ideally I'd pick SURPAT over it, but the damn thing is patented and the proprietor (SRVV) charges an arm and a leg for it, so it's a no-brainer that the MOD just went for multicam.
@Nathan-Roman7 ай бұрын
@@alexeishayya-shirokov3603 It's hard to argue with Multicam, it sees the success it does because it is a true multi terrain pattern that actually works. Photos generally don't do it justice, but in real life it is very effective.

Its quite an improvement, but as you mentioned in response to another comment, it does feel like Russia still lags behind at least a decade in comparison to (for example) the average US infantryman, which is understandable considering their economy. I wonder how the average PLA grunt fares in comparison, i can't find any decent information about their gear. As always, thank you for the video!
