Still here. COVID didn't get me. I know you all have been waiting for a batch of meatloaf. Here you go. I appreciate all the concerned emails from folks checking on me. It sure is nice to know I have some friends out there.
In this batch we have, Shop moving announcement, Norton grinding books, Helical tooth jacobs chuck, Colvin and Stanley toolbit test, Coneiak plastic polisher, Gyrocompass, PIG mat products, hot wire foam cutter.

My friend's dad is the inventor of the Wonder cutter! It was invented very close to you, in Lompoc. If you have ever passed the 80 ft styrofoam blue whale in the middle of a farmer's field off of I-5, that is his place, and that whale was his daughter's science fair project. Small world!

After watching your channel from the start, I didn't need another reason to admire you and your work. But then you casually mentioned Thrasher magazine. Not only that, you mentioned it in the context of hot wire foam cutting. When I was a teen, my dad's screen printing shop took on some interesting side work making enormous foam signs and "sculptures" for trade shows. Not just any trade shows, but for skateboarding and surfing trade shows. I spent several summers using hot wire foam cutters making Vans, Vision Streetwear, Quicksilver, and dozens of other brands' signs. During the school year, I spent most of my time in the high school machine shop learning how to program and run a CNC mill that replayed jobs off a micro cassette tape that you need a special device to record on to. So crazy to be reminded of all that with a single mention of Thrasher.

Tom, A couple of things. First; I need grippy mat for my tool boxes. Second; Did anybody notice the spinning 1144 (marker) steel in the lathe, I see a Swastika. Third; That gyro is pretty cool, what would it do up in a Airplane? I’m going to retire in a few years, I dread the move.

Hey Tom, I work in a facility at the University of Nebraska Omaha with a powder based metal 3d printer that sits idle quite a bit of the time. I can probably get a few of those helical chuck keys 3D printed in 17-4PH stainless at near material cost whenever you get around to modeling it. Also if you could do a video on the how you actually create the model from the chuck measurements that would be awesome.

Hi Tom, great to see a vid from you and great to see you're still here :) I won't lie I kept looking for material from you. Also awesome that you found a new shop and a better deal. It never ceases to amaze me how some landlords think they're the best thing since sliced bread and just end up driving good tenants away. All the best from CT!

Sometimes it's no the landlords. Out in about Ipswich, Australia, the real estate agents there were charging Brisbane city rates (State capital, 50 minutes up the motorway) on their commercial zones despite... Eh hem: ***all the buildings being empty for the last 10 years*** (maybe 15). Everything is broken, not up to code, the landlords are too broke to fix it and the value proposition is too poor to sell out. The city council is now buying back buildings and rebuilding them.

@@Zappyguy111 True. I wasn't going to bring up the middle men to keep my post short :) However, screwing with your tenants in the belief that you can do better is a strategy that is guaranteed to fail eventually and all they'll be left with is an empty building no one will rent or buy. Funny, that's kind of how some people conduct their personal lives 😂

The pen engraving on the metal side of the gyro compass enclosure reads "NAIT Expl." This may give us a clue to what it was used in. As this has the Northwest Industries tag from Edmonton, AB, NAIT here likely stands for Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, a technical school in Edmonton. Expl may be a reference to the Geological Exploration Technologist specialization available through the school. Due to sensitivity of the instrument it may be able to help map magnetic anomalies. I can imagine that would be helpful in attempting to find some mineral deposits.

NWI in Edmonton was a military contractor and back in the late 70-80’s they rebuilt the CF 104 star fighter. The star fighter had a primitive INS gyro system. I believe that was an instrument for calibration of that INS.

Nice stuff Tom. Was the compass designed to operate in a vacuum, thus the case design, make it even more sensitive?
@alexanderkupke920
@alexanderkupke920 3 жыл бұрын
As sensitive as this thing is, I wonder if it really is intended to go on an aircraft as a compass. With all the vibration going on I bet that thing would start spinning around like crazy. And with nwi being an aircraft manufacturer, that would be the first assumption. A spherical compass in a fluid would be much more suited for the task instead of such a precision gyroscopic mount. But with the weird housing and crazy sensitivity, I wonder if that was actually a tool used as kind of a reference for calibration, although I cannot imagine how you are supposed to read it. I have seen some South, West, East, North marks on it, but I cannot make sense of the numbered scales on it.

I made a "Wonder Cutter" for my son using an old soldering gun and some Nichrome wire. He used it to sculpt foam blocks for his train layout. The USAF was formed from the USAAF by an Act of Congress in 1947. It's a compass. It's supposed to be responsive to magnetic fields; principally geomagnetic fields that are much weaker than any nearby magnet. Northwest Industries Ltd. was located in Hangar 11 at the Edmonton Airport in Edmonton, Alberta. It was an aircraft repair station. The founder (now dead) is a member of the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame for his contributions to air transportation in the far north.

Good to see you back. Good luck on the move. That compass is not a gyro compass but a true magnetic compass tho it is kind of gimballed like one. Gyro compasses align with the rotation of the earth. That compass aligns with the magnetic field. You should be able to watch the decline of the magnetic field with that thing. When it starts spinning, look for cover. ;-}

Hi Tom glad you’re back. Being an aviator myself and living in Edmonton Alberta, Northwest Industries was an airplane manufacturer and repair facility. They were based out of our city centre airport Blachford field, which has since been closed and had quite the history itself. Northwest Industries had a full machine shop and from my knowledge produced its own avionics in house as well. They are notable for doing work for the USAF overhauling 112 F-84 fighter planes. I believe this was one of the first times a company outside the US was awarded such work. This would have been around 1965. Hanger 11 at the closed airport is still standing today as they grounds are slowly being converted to a new housing development. The instrument you have looks like some sort of angle of attack indicator but I’m really not sure. Lastly I noticed the back is engraved with NAIT EXPL. I would think this stands for Northern Alberta Institute of Technology which was and still is right across the road from Hanger 11. Maybe given to the school as a sample? In any case you have quite the desk ornament. I’m hoping someone who’s seasoned with more years of avionics knowledge than I am can chime in and elaborate.

The 'Gyrocompass' as others have mentioned, is for measuring not only the Azimuth to magnetic North, but the 'Dip' or vertical angle of the local magnetic field. Used by Geophysicists, Geologists, prospectors, etc... What you have is a beautiful example from the mechanical age of instrumentation. Today it is done electronically, and called a 'three axis magnetometer'. You have one in your smartphone, along with some accelerometers and software, that do a pretty damn good job of figuring out which way is True North, despite all the near and far distortions of the magnetic field...

That compass is very interesting, Northwestern in Edmonton was a huge aerospace manufacturer, turned into Spar Aerospace. They did a lot of work for the National Research Counsel. That could very well have been something used in the guidance system in a sounding rocket. Very cool item that may well need some deep digging to find out more about it. My father inlaw worked for the NRC launching those rockets out of Churchill Manitoba. He also later worked for NASA, Boeing and Lockheed, this was in the days after he worked for Avro, Yes that AV Row company that built the Arrow.

It used nichrome wire that burned through the nomex felt pad between the tile and the aluminum vehicle substrate. It wasn’t used much since we rarely reinstalled flown tiles. The smell of burning RTV and Nomex felt was wonderful!

Hi Tom, sorry about the move but it does sound as if you have found a more suitable place. Hope the move goes very well for you both. The Gyro Compass, I wonder several things, is it for measuring the angle the magnet force is heading into the Earth, or bearing in mind Canada is rather near the Magnetic North Pole is it an alternative sort of magnetic compass that reads dip angle, with a suitable chart it could be used for heading information. A very interesting device whatever it is for. All the best.

Tom, I don't think that is a gyro at all. It looks to be a compass that can align itself to the vertical and horizontal components of the Earth's magnetic field simultaneously. Typical compasses are balanced to attempt to only detect the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field. Note that were the center rotating wheel to be spun up like a gyro is typically, you could not read the numbers on the wheel. The center rotating wheel also lacks any visible vanes to be driven by air. Hope this helps.

I hope the move to the new shop goes well and everyone stays safe during the move. You have lots of big, heavy machines, not to mention the boxes of tools and instruments. Take Care and Stay Safe. Bob

Nice meatloaf Tom. When you get around to modeling the helical chuck key and need it metal 3D printed, let me know. I work for Markforged, and we design and sell metal 3D printers. I can get you a few printed up.

It's not so much that the gyro compass is sensitive, it's more a case that the strong magnet is powerful in that it has strong flux lines that extend a long distance from it. The compass is a passive device.

Oh man, nice baby hot wire! I used to work on the dumb end of a giant cnc one of those. By the dumb end I mean that I would pull the waste off the cuts and tape em up to be fed into a granulator haha Cool stuff!

I like your quote on Perfection. One that seems to apply to your moving shop, "Necessity is the Mother of Invention". Good to see some new content, looking forward to seeing the next iteration of oX TooLs. Hopefully you can get some random B roll footage of the moving process and make the most out of the situation.

be careful with magnets and compasses. sometimes they reverse the poles on compasses when they get close enough. I learned it the hard way hiking on an overcast day in an unfamiliar mountain range with a compass and map not realizing we are heading south for 2 hours.

Forgot how much I enjoy this channel. Really sucks having to move. Running all new electrical is such a pain in the ass.
