For sure, once you get it in a safe place, it's basically a non-issue until you go mining again. Even then I am very careless about exposure to Slimelung and I don't notice a major production dropoff if a couple of my dupes happen to contract it.
@JD_Mortal3 жыл бұрын
Now... Back a few updates ago... Dupes died from it, if you didn't cure it, in 10 days! It was also easy to spread around and hard to control. You needed to handle it like a brain-surgeon. Buddy-plants were your buddy, more than oxygen and chlorine. Nothing is worse than the bad programming logic and controls of the game itself. There is no way to tell them NOT to use germ-items in things and they will freely pick up germ-infected algae, if they are mining in the slime area, if the next task is farming or refilling an oxidizer as the next task in the list. (As opposed to grabbing a clean algae that is next to the farm or oxidizer or algae-terrarium.) NOTE: Once the game has decided to use THAT infected item, ALL new dupes will come to grab that item next, if you force them to drop the item. Ten more will come, then 20, then all of them... (I use a doorway to lock them out, after I manually pull them our, so they drop the infected items they all want to take out of the room, until the room is safe to enter.)

I still remember when slimelung was actually dangerous. Now, it can be almost be ignored and food poisoning is easy to handle. One thing that still bothers me tho are the sinks and showers. For example: Dupe uses the toilet, germ infected water gets pumped into a water sieve, normal, but germ infected water comes out. So why does my dupes don't get infected when they shower and wash their hands with germ-infected water?

Slimelung can be cured in Sickbay now, no need of steel. That makes it way easier. On other hand, you cant just spam Deodorizers to get rid of slime in the air, because they need power now. There have been moments where the room is filled with unbreathable gas because I either had too little oxygen or too many other gasses in my base. Normally this isn't much of a problem, but slimelung dupes run out of oxygen before they can make decent progression on their meal. Nice tutorial. However, dealing with germs early on really isn't that big of a deal. You made a great example of building your germ generating buildings behind the wash basin. At that point, you don't need to worry about killing or dealing with the germs for quite some time. Just store it away in a reservoir until you get your colony stabilized. I find dealing with germs a nice extra challenge with setting up your colony. This is great for new players just starting because you did mention that it is overwhelming for new players. Still, great tutorial covering a lot of information.

Its bothering me that i'm more than 26 min into a video about germ control and you've never once used the germ overlay to easily show where germs are and aren't and what kind. Trying to read the tiny words in a video playing at double speed (because it's over an hour long) or trying to pause when you're mousing over just the right place is giving me a headache and makes the videos really hard to watch. :( the rest of the video is mostly well thought out and shows several scenarios and gives lots of useful information. I'm gonna need an extra dose of excedrin to get thru it tho.
@Magnet_MD3 жыл бұрын
Hey Shiney, sorry about that. I think that the germ overlay is honestly not that helpful, and this is part of why this system is hard to understand. In my opinion, dealing with germs is not a matter of understanding where they are, but rather controlling the germ sources and exposure points. One of the methods I recommend is to only deal with food poisoning germs before duplicants eat or drink, and the overlay would show a bunch of food poisoning germs all over the place, but still, it wouldn't matter because the duplicants aren't exposing themselves. Hopefully that helps a little bit, but I'd also say that germs are not the biggest of deals (especially in the early game), so you can avoid a majority of them by just following a few simple examples and containing the germ sources.
4 жыл бұрын
Great video, very thorough. Everything you ever wanted to know about germs but never bother to ask. :-) Conclusion : I was worrying for the wrong things and was applying wrong/useless mitigations. I normally never bother with deodorizers and put the canisters in liquid. I guess you want to use the deodorizers early game because it produce a bit of oxygen? I'm looking forward to your oxygen production setup. It seam very nice and simple. Also, I feel like it would work even if you don't have access to High Pressure Gas Vent. I'm having all kind of problems with the Gas Shutoffs and Gas Element Sensor because if pressure blocks a vent, everything gets mixed up. Plastic is rather late game.
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wouldn't use a high pressure gas vent anyway, that was a dumb idea on my part to show it that way in the video. I am just used to dumping stuff into an enclosed chamber with one of those vents, but they should be hooked up to regular vents for sure.
@DarknessLPs4 жыл бұрын
I think the reason for the 'sink at edge of bathroom' does actually work to prevent germs is because dupes usually go to the bathroom, wash their hands, and then go eat. So it prevents food poisoning germs from getting to the food which is really what is cared about. Slime lung germs really only affect breathing so as long as dupes aren't breathing it in...it's pretty much harmless. It can be on stuff and as long as it's not off gassing, I don't think it really matters....even if it does off gas, it's still not that big a deal unless you have polluted oxygen in your base.
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my only point with the sinks at the exit of the bathroom is that there are a lot of other sources that could put food poisoning germs onto duplicants. That only solves part of it, but then the germs spread and can fester. The most fool-proof way seems to be to force duplicants and food to be clean when it's time to eat. If they get dirty elsewhere, oh well.
@DarknessLPs4 жыл бұрын
@@Magnet_MD That's a good point to make, I was simply trying to explain the possible logic for food poisoning germs. Taking into consideration how inexpensive pipe can be and the fact that you really only need a couple liquid reservoirs, a little power, a sieve and a small amount of automation, it really might be the best idea to simply spread a few sinks around your eating and cooking area in addition to outside of your toilets. Honestly though, the germs are almost a non-issue. Slimelung is a bit annoying and slows down the dupes so that one is a bit more of a problem but food poisoning is kind of unimportant right now.
@LucyTheBox4 жыл бұрын
On food poisoning: I quickly set up a vaccuum food storage room (pretty easy to set up and barely requires any research). Germs die, food doesn't spoil. Then I place a washing basin next to my toilet. I don't do anything with the dirt or polluted water, I just place a deoderiser and use it as oxygen production. Even if they get food poisoning from other sources, those sources will be interacted with fairly irregularly. The vaccuum storage prevents germs from just reproducing on your food meaning the food poisoning will be gone within a cycle usually. Meanwhile, your toilets get used every day, without a washing basin, thats just constant food poisoning germs everywhere. The goal isn't to eliminate all sources of food poisoning. The goal is just to stop the main cause of food poisoning, which will greatly decrease the amount of times your dupes have food poisoning
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
My main thought on this is that exposure will eventually happen, and the downsides just aren't worth investing into until there are bigger problems that have been solved. Making sure food and the duplicant is clean when they eat seems to be the best option, and I was only using bleach stone/chlorine cause it kills germs really fast (and there's not much else to do with it).

Magnet: "Oh, I won't set up a water positive plumbing toilet and sink for a while." Also Magnet: "You can't handle the germs." Suggestion: Plumbing toilets and sinks, deals with most of your germs and no handling germy stuff. The clean water coming out of the sieve can be priorized off pipe with a liquid bridge or reservoir (additional buffer function) - once your clean water is backed up until the priority re-introducem it will take the low priority path further down the pipe. guide that into a reservoid or two and let them sit. time will kill off the germs in the clean water and after a while you have 5t of clean, room temperature, germ free water. All this needs is sand and a bit of power for the sieve and occasional reconnecting the de-germing reservoirs. all of that is pretty cheap. and a compost with deodorizers even generates oxygen and dirt (although the heat can get annoying after 50 cycles or so)

I'd recommend Francis John's method of Terrain bathrooms. Build a room right next to the toilets with deodorizers at the entrance, and store your polluted dirt in there with the polluted water. The polluted water can be a decent early game dumping pool, and to help produce an early game thimblereed farm. Putting the dirt in here removes the germs from traveling outside the bathroom, as well as eliminating the need for composts that waste a lot of time for little pay-out given germ-free dirt is a primary diggable resource in the starting area.

My guess is that things will change, one way or another, currently we just have a huge bunch of useless stuff in the game. Gameplay mechanics went other way than expected and kind of got separated from the infrastruture base. Well, we can live with it, can't we? they poop before eating, unless occupied, won't be too late if only one dupe is ahead and travel is short. technically can set extra bathtime or downtime, can bring them closer to hall or beds and better morale. sleep time on 3 too long, 2 enough if travel is shorter. since tables are assigned, splitting mess hall is possible. having sinks both sides and maybe doors filtered would change paths too. for example 2 shifts 4-4 dupes, 1 block diff. if 4 enters right, needs 4 sinks, if they delayed then 8. if they split path, probably less mixing. I checked toilets and sinks, 3:2 ok but chitchat can synch them. not sure how that works. probably one is ok, too many won't matter. could rejoin hall or make it 2 levels. it's still a room if not closed tiles. to be more staggered one would go left, the other right. same side and doors works too, different levels. but if unreachable then no doors needed and can merge in a room still. if there are 8 sinks to walk trough is a lot of walk. they all need to reach food tho from same place or two split. for ease of build, toilets to left but walled off, sinks under a level, mess hall entry to bottom, other side reverse. could skip one sink 4:3. will try for 8-12 dupes.

The reason it doesn't work in sandbox is because you don't have a Dupe to transmit the germs to the object. The Dupes transmit it wherever they touch. No Dupe, no transfer. The liquid to air transmission happens because the Dupe had germs and exhaled germy CO2.

You might call me paranoid, but a sick dupe stops running and working to express his frustration, and he does it a lot. Is that a big deal? I'd like to know your opinion. The best way to prevent Slimelung in the early game - DON'T dig out the slime. You can freely dig out everything else in the Slime Biome around the slime, like gold amalgam, sedimentary rock, plants, you can even take polluted water, it's going to be germ free, but leave the slime alone. The moment you dig out one tile of slime, the entire area is infected. But as long as you don't, you are gonna be fine. Food Poisoning is complicated, I get it. What I do is create a "polluted room" under my bathroom with Sink and Deodorizer inside + combine Infinite Bathroom with Infinite Shower. Didn't have to worry about Food Poisoning ever since.

I still have the habits from the beta stage, like avoiding at all cost slimelung since it was way more dangerous. 1:10:18 this especially sounds so wrong to me, plants now don't care if the water has germs in it? They produce germ free food? Why would they change that? Also never bothered to remove the germs from the electrolyzer oxygen, dupes don't get sick from it so whatever

Couldn't you just ship the cooked food to anywhere past the direction of the sinks? You save yourself some bleach stone, but only if the food was not touched at all after cooking. This is assuming that duplicants aren't allowed to eat raw food, your sinks are never overloaded, and cooked food is immediately shipped after cooking.
@Magnet_MD3 жыл бұрын
Yep, you can ship it anywhere past the sinks. The bleach stone is just to kill any stray germs and to keep the food fresh. And yes, this setup is making all of the assumptions you listed. You could implement it in phases, and the easiest one is probably shipping or carrying it to a refrigerator somewhere past the sinks, to kill most of the germs and (much more importantly) keep the food fresh. This setup isn't something I'd heavily prioritize (still a lot less important than the things I listed in the video, but by the time you have shipping and plumbing, you might as well hook something like this up to save some extra trips to the bathroom.

@@Magnet_MD Mk, this should help me have one less thing to worry about ingame (apart from exploring slimelung w/out atmo suits I wanted before, and transitioning to electrolyzer oxygen), especially when I went into ranching really early, but have yet to install automated railing. The problem with disease is that it doesn't matter. I ended up using a mod to make slimelung deadly again, because otherwise whats the point? As to bathrooms, you are not supposed to keep using the basic versions. Switch to the piped versions before you need to empty the starter ones the first time. Food poisoning solved forever.

Rads are the easy way to go if you have the dlc. Simply plant one weezwort and the rads will kill everything in minutes. Works for all germs. You can even put sewage water in vats beside a farm plot so you can plant a wheezwort to turn it into germ free clean water in minutes. You can even combine your idea with it and send vent pipes past uranium doors to automate disinfecting without the use of any disinfecting material or gases, just rads.

yo i know its old but the thing about sickness percentage is individual, when it says 27% u cant think about it as a group of 15, its 27% of 100% for each and everyone of them so sometimes u get all of them sick, sometimes u get only 1 like ur video. like everyone rolled a dice and only one got a number below 27 the others got above it. got that when i was modding this war of mine few years ago lol

Each exposure should increase resistance and each infection should build-up tolerance. (Thus, if you live in a bubble of purity, you should be more devastated from contact. If you live like a pig, constantly exposed and sometimes infected, but never to the point of severe issues... You should be able to thrive better if you live less like a pig, or continue to live like a pig. just like in real life. Many people are "doctor/medication/sanitation codependent"... While most poor people and lazy people and unaware or unscathed people, who constantly live on the edge, never visiting a hospital or doctor or popping medication... They have less issues than the others. Both now, and in the future.) Honestly, they need to give us more control over how to manage these things. Since they refuse to, they had no choice but to nerf the devastation. Nerfed to the point of, as you see, being almost pointless. Just wasted game processing.

Weird way to say it. You build a sink and that's it. It's not hard. It's not like it takes some master plan to build a sink. You put it down and it's done. Sure germs don't matter really. I've never had trouble with food poisoning and I use sinks. Never had to spread around my base. Never have it get on food. By about cycle 12 I put in good toilets. There is no by product of bad. I usually tie Reeds to be bathrooms and they eat the germ water. So I have zero germy dirt. It seems you're trying so hard not to use something that's so easy to use it's silly not too. Now I guess if you going to use an outhouse for ever then I guess it becomes a problem. Most players first upgrade you make is good bathrooms. Why? Because they are clean and take no dupe action to keep them going. So if you're using outhouses long enough to become a problem then you're kind of failing anyway. Not being mean. So don't take it that way. You do very nice videos. A big thanks you to you.

I see what you're saying, I just don't think it's that straightforward. I consistently have discussions about why I do certain things, and a lot of times I'm doing stuff that isn't 100% optimal because it's in the context of giving advice to a newer player. My new-player experience was totally changed when I learned to conserve water, and how to set renewable stuff up in the mid-game. One of the criticisms I have of a lot of advice directed at new players is that it's either too complicated (and a new player won't understand it), or it includes advice that directs a new player's attention to things that don't matter for a new player's survival. For that reason, I think germs are a system that a newer player just doesn't need to pay attention to until much later in the game, and it especially doesn't out-rank any of the systems that need full sustainability in the mid- or late-game. I dunno, it's totally fine to disagree, that's just what I think and why I do that. I just don't want to distract a newer player with solving problems that won't contribute to their colony's survival/death, and germs are the prime example of such a thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's why I do it.
