Excellent, concise review! I bought one, but have not used it yet. At least now I have a visual of set up, and what to expect. I do wish it was free standing, but with decent stakes it won't be too difficult to set up on harder ground. As for water proof-ness, another guy on KZbin reviewed this same tent, and was caught in a Texas hail and thunderstorm for 6 hours and NO LEAKS!

I got this tent for my grandkids to have for the back yard. I sprayed all the seams with silicone water guard and it did well in the rain. I also used a tarp clip to guy out the back of the tent instead of sewing a loop. I also purchased a cheap 8x10 tarp from walmart and staked it behind the tent and ran it over to the front and used trekking poles to build an awning. That way you leave the doors open to help with condensation. Can't beat it for the price. Nice video.

Thanks, its a great little tent, I just wish it didn't have so much condensation problems. For a backyard setup the tarp idea sounds great, but when I carry it backpacking, I am not looking to add the weight of an extra tarp.

@@markthomas2436 That would depend on the tarp you get. Those Walmart tarps aren’t too bad but there are definitely lighter options. Then you would probably end up spending more on the tarp than the tent.

I've used an Ozark Trail 2 man tent for many years and have one that is over 20 years old that still performs quite well. Condensation was never a problem with that model due to the use of a rain fly. This 1 man version seems perfect for the price and weight and the condensation issue can be handled with openning of the vestibule. Great review of a much overlooked product line but I know from having used the 2 man version in sun , heavy rain, as well as sleet and hail, these tents hold their own against more expensive options. Perfect for hiking, bushcraft, or survival scenarios. When you consider a tarp option and the price, amount of cover, and set up time & requirements for each, it's a no brainer that this tent wins out in every way

I really enjoy using this tent. I still hate the condensation problems. If you are carrying the tent on a dirt bike and weight is not a huge issue, you might look at the Ozark Trail one person tent that has a double wall design. It’s heavier but should do better with the condensation problem. I don’t have any first hand experience though.

What suggestions could you have shown that are fairly affordable examples of how to use something to create a double walled type of set up so you could leave the vestibule open for more ventilation?
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
Obviously you could add a tarp but that adds weight to a tent that’s main appeal is the price to weight ratio. Frankly I’m not sure that just leaving the vestibule open would solve the problem. I’m sure it would help but still wouldn’t give the same amount of ventilation as a tent with airflow on all 4 sides.

Great review and thanks. Not talking about your comments on condensation here, because they are reasonable. But it SEEMS like a ton of tent review guys are hung up on condensation, and I just do NOT get it. Folks, condensation is a part of camping. When ya get up in the morning, everything around you may be covered in DEW. It's no big deal. He is right. You just keep a squeegee towel and wipe it off, and squeeze the towel out just beyond your tent. I have been camping for 50 years, and I have never considered condensation to be any big deal.

I decided a $25 minidome (youth tent) which is 6.5x4.5 and 43" high with a very friendly end door was much better. 2lbs Smaller pack Free standing (no pegs required unless windy) Easier to unzip, stand up, pee, go back to bed without getting out of the dry tent floor or using a bottle. Better top and door ventilation. No need for vestibule. I sleep diagonally and put my pack, jacket, helmet (bike camping) and extras in the unused corners. Didn't look seam sealed so i did it with Coughlan sealer in 5 minutes and then gorilla tape. It doesn't leak. Silicon caulk tube would probably do as good a job. If weather looks real bad I throw a bigger tent rainfly over it for the door. The door will leak

Walmart Himont version is screen and over fly for about $28. It has two bow hoops and is a foot wider. Usually red and white. It does produce a puddle flat top (2 poles don't cross), which leaks badly. You could fix that somewhat with some improvised struts.

If you're truly that worried about 2-5oz of weight being an issue, just don't carry any tent stakes with you. If you're backpacking, you SHOULD already be carrying a knife of some sort for a multitude of reasons, and it only takes a couple of minutes to fashion a set of wooden tent stakes when it's time to make camp. Honestly, with the style/format of the tent, you could probably get away with leaving the poles out as well. A quick ridgeline and a few prusik knots would be more than enough to support the roof of this thing. It may require more cordage than you originally would have packed, but from a weight standpoint, you could carry twice as much extra cordage, and still save a TON of weight comparatively.
@TheBudgetSportsman
@TheBudgetSportsman Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, much of life is compromises and priorities. For me, backpacking is a delicate balance of budget, weight, comfort and convenience. I’m happy to pay a few dollars to save a few ounce. I lose a little weight in my pack, but I still have the convenience of not having to find or make stakes once I get to camp. Same with the poles. Sure I could save weight but I would sacrifice convenience. It’s all a delicate balance and what’s right for me, may not work for you. Anyways, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@callersvoice9512
@callersvoice9512 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBudgetSportsman I guess that's kind of where the line between backpacking and bushcrafting is drawn eh? That is to say, my background being the latter, setting up a ridgeline with a decent piece of cordage is much more convenient, and time saving than having to mess with tent poles, but that's mostly because I've been doing it for years and can get a full tarp/tent shelter set up in under 2 minutes most days, and 9 times out of 10 I DO carry tent stakes just for that simple convenience. Definitely agree that it all boils down to personal preference! Just wanted to get that information out there for anyone that may be looking to get that "gritty" in cutting weight. haha! That's for the reply, and the great info provided in this review.

Wow that’s a pretty narrow minded approach. First ounces add up to pounds so if you take that approach with everything you carry, you’ll end up with 10lbs of extra weight. Second, it’s not about the ability it’s about enjoyment. I can carry a 70lb pack, I just don’t want to. I enjoy backpacking a lot more with a 30lb pack. If I had the money to buy more premium gear I am sure I would enjoy a 20lb pack even more.
