I found my friend Lawrie out on the hill and he was reviewing the new Ozone Roadster 3 for Cross Country magazine so I took the opportunity to ask him about Paramotor wings :)
Seemed to be pretty floaty and thermal just as well as all the other wings! Wish we had had the time for me to fly it too but maybe next time!
Check Lawrie's channel on youtube too!

Paramotoring for the win! Wanted to get into freeflight back in 2011, but lack if freeflying sights here next to me, I chose paramotoring. I have since become an instructor and have been teaching students through the USPPA syllabus for over 5 years now an a USPPA Instructor. You should definitely give PPG go sir.

3:18 - On the Roadster 3, it is OK to have trim out and still use brake. It is when you use speed bar + trims together, that brakes should not be used, but rather the tip steering system.

I have been flying my Ozone Mojo 5 with my Titan Propulse with Moster D/S 185. It's slow but safe and still fun. I just sent my wing for inspection and they are upgrading the risers so that they have trims. My understanding is that the Mojo PWR is based on the Mojo 5 wing. I suspect they are the same except for the risers having trims on the PWR model.

Thanks for the overview. Those who want to buy this wing for mostly free flying I suggest some other wing. Because R3 is not tested/certified during accelerated flight. So you should not use speed bar or with trimmers other than in slow position during free flight, not even in zero wind conditions. With power it is OK.

How much difference in ridge soaring performance is there between a ppg wing like the roadster3 compared to an equivalent EN B freeflight wing? Will the Roadster sink out while the freeflight wings stay up or can I expect it to just be 10ft lower than the other gliders on the ridge?
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 5 жыл бұрын
He seem to be able to keep up with just about everyone, including C wings etc. If you're in the correct weightrange and you're in lift there shouldn't be a problem at all. It's only when you're in sink or in still air that I suppose you would see a decrease in glide ratio from it being a bit more draggy.

@@AndreBandarra1 I have the roadster3 24m and i can say that it does have more sink than a traditional PG wing. I was hoping i could use it for both but its not that great in light winds, plus at 24m i am about 5 kilos too heavy. Its an amazing wing. I plan on using it for free flight when the wind is strong and i need more speed and stability. On light days its hard to stay up. I hear the Kona is Ozone's best wing if someone wants to do both PPG and PG.

I feel like i should add this email i got from Emilia @ Ozone about the Roadster 3 and my questions about using it for free flight. I hope she doesn't mind. I just think this info might be helpful for some. "Keep in mind that Roadster 3 is a reflex wing. This kind of profile is different that typical paragliding wing. It is design to be solid and fast but not the same performance as classic paraglider the same class. Even if you are within PG weight range, the Roadster 3 won't thermal as good as Buzz Z6 for example (or Rush), it will have more speed and more sink rate so staying in thermals is more difficult. In addition you are overweight for the size 24 for paragliding so you will have even more speed and more sink rate comparing to EN B paraglider. But there are also some advantages, for example you can do soaring in much stronger winds and have excellent performance. It is hard to find a compromise to have an excellent wing in paramotor and paragliding. Each discipline has different needs and wings are more and more designed for a specific purpose. "

Mitch I think if you were going to use it to free fly you would be disappointed. Andre says that Laurie could keep up with the C wings, but Andre didn't mention....Laurie is one hell of a good xc pilot (and instructor 👍) . I have free flown my Revo 2 on the coast and my friend his roady 3 neither of us could get up to the free flying boys on their Paragliders......on the plus side though when the wind got stronger and those boys stated landing because they no longer penetrate...we kept flying trimming faster 😂

I'm thinking about going the other way. I paramotor, but I'd like to try free flying. Are any paramotor wings unsuitable for free flight?
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 Жыл бұрын
I don't know all of the paramotor wings but in general you can freefly them. In fact if you have a motor failure or just turn it off, you are freeflying. The only thing is with a lot of reflex most paramotor wings are designed to fly fast rather than produce lift so a paramotor wing on the hill might have to work harder than a freeflight wing to stay up, but it's perfectly usable to start getting used to it

Hi Andre, I am trained in flying a paramotor and fly an Ozone Spyder wing which is rated for PG also (Almost the same as the Roadster 3). I have never tried paragliding, nor have I ever used thermals for lift - I have flown through the middle of them and they scare me haha. I often get up high and turn the engine off and glide down to my landing field as I love the sound of the wooshing air on the wing as I pull S-turns. I feel that I have quite good control over my wing, but I would love to have a go at low altitude ridge soaring with no motor, but not sure how to get started with it. Any pointers? keep up the great vids, Rich

Hey Richard, it's a completely different experience and I think freeflying improves your paramotoring and vice versa, so I'm happy you're curious to try it. Step one would be to find a place to do it! If there are any freeflight clubs near you I would join because they will know about the best places to do it and also they might have someone that is a good coach or mentor to get you past the first few flights with good advice. Hope it helps and maybe try to stay away from thermals for the first 50 hours or so :)

I have a question. I have a 24m spider wing I bought for ppl so is It possible to use my spide r as a dual purpose wing? I have heard of people converting the tip steer to a 2 d setup. Can this help me use the wing for pg? The wing does have a ppg rating and a ppg rating on the tag.

So does this mean you could go paramotoring in the morning then when the thermals pick up you could turn the engine off and just do paragliding even with the paramotor on your back, and stay up all day.

With an extra 50 to 80 pounds on your back, you'd probably need some strong thermals - but it could definitely be possible, particularly with an extra large wing. I'm not sure if woody was using a ppg or pg wing in that one, but it didn't look like the risers had any trimmers, so it might've been a regular pg wing with a little more efficiency.
