So far the bog I built following your recommendations, but our layout, works fantastic. This will be its second season running, so the plants will be more mature. This should help it become more efficient with each passing year. You have helped so many people like me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Take care. 👍

I transitioned to your style bog filter because of the defects in not being able to clean the David Butler style filter. The bog filter makes more sense, I’m sad that I didn’t figure it out until after I made my swim pond

I built a bog filter for my small fish pond using a solar pump, but following your lead. I had it set up as a reed bed filter originally, but suspected it didn't do the job. That's for sharing your tried and tested designs. I'm really pleased with it and pleased with my DIY skills! Cheers!

I second what @sweetkoiyo just wrote. Excact same here. I put my return underground to stabilize water temperature a bit. Now looking forward to seeing how it works when the filter returns to full functioning (with warmer water). So far always crystal clear water. I would not have a pond without you. And I LOVE it :-)

My bog in a barrel, based on your design, is still working great. I just had the first really big rainfall of the year, and my pond went very blackwater, probably because the rain washed a bunch of oak tree tassels out of the trees and into the pond. I don't know if I should worry about it. I am thinking about flushing the bog, and replacing some of the water.
@Ozponds8 ай бұрын
Be interesting to see how quickly it clears. Sometimes I have similar issues after big rains. Water is generally clear again within 24hrs.

@@Ozponds I panicked a little, and changed some of the water. I couldn't find my fish! I thought they had died for some reason, but after I took out maybe 80 or so gallons of water, I decided to get my underwater camera. There they all were, in a little school just hanging out. lol

Sometimes with big storms and changes of water this will occur . Fish will find a better place to stay in. Sometimes it’s simply for more oxygen. Large changes in the water can also tend to make them stay in coves or heavy rock areas where the water tends to be less disturbed. Always great to find your fish that you think you’ve lost.

My pond and bog filter work great! I followed your design as best I could with available materials and lowest possible cost. I have been using a Jebao filter, but it has stopped working. Pretty disappointed that I'll have to buy a new pump after 2 seasons. First, the power supply failed. Now the impeller just won't turn under power. It spins freely with my finger but there is something wrong mechanically. It'll catch and start but then stop immediately. Anyway, thanks for the great advice on bog filters!

That’s no good. I’ve still got my original 4 running 24/7 no issue. I also have a 5th running the stream on the pond/stream I built below the dream pond. I’m still incredibly happy with them. Are yours protected?

@@Ozponds my pump is submerged. The control unit and power are out of direct sun and rain, but only inside a bucket.

@@MarvinBowen Hi Marvin, have you removed impellor to check for obstruction and or is there an error message on power unit? There's not much to the pump which operates on magnetic field.

@@Ozponds I'm not sure yet. I liked the pump and control. If there is a different option to try I might, otherwise probably stick with Jebao.

I’m having problems with my big! It was keeping the water crystal clear. I added more plants to the pond which stirred the bottom and it got cloudy, but every other time it settled and became clear again. Now it’s been cloudy for over 3 weeks and I don’t know what to do! I don’t know what’s changed and I’m havi bc a lot of problems fixing it

If it’s small, you could just do a water change. If it’s big try a flocculent. I’ve got links to flocculents on my products page @ ozponds.com

Really appreciate all your content, thank you. I'm in the process of building a pond and was wondering what your bottom drain setup is in your dream pond. I can't remember seeing you detail that.
@Ozponds8 ай бұрын
No actual bottom drain. I placed a barrel beside the intake bay. There’s a pump inside the barrel that takes water from the bottom of the pond. I can’t remember which video it was, where I showed what I did, but it’s somewhere in the dream pond playlist. The bottom of the pond stays pretty clean. The middle shelf is where most of the buildup occurs.

@@Ozponds Thanks, I'll see if I can find it. Really curious as to what you are using to keep debris out of that pump.

I actually just made a video on how I wrapped it like a burrito. Before that I had a coarse sponge over the opening in the barrel.

Hi Kevin. I have recently got a small (400 litre) above ground pond in my garden and set it up with a filter that came with the kit (blagdon affinity pond kit) and some plants. I am looking to build a small bog filter as well to go with it as an additional filter and your videos are super useful for that. Thank you so much. I was wondering if you are ever concerned about the pump burning out because its constantly running or water affecting the plug points considering they are outdoors? Not sure I would be able to leave the house on holidays because I will be constantly worried there may be issue. How do you handle that yourself?
@Ozponds4 ай бұрын
Dedicated pumps for ponds or aquariums are designed to run 24/7 for years. I use all low volt pumps, the power supply socket is undercover and I extend the cable to the pond.

Hi, I love your videos and have built two bogs. The problem I keep having is the bog overflowing, which then results in the pond losing water. Seems like the pump is sending too much water to the bog, but I haven't been able to get the right balance because when I lower the flow from the pump, then there's too little water getting to the bog. Please help!

Hey kev. In this video you mention that the water should take anywhere between 10 mins to an hour, so do you mean slower the better ? For a 12000 litre pond with 10 koi what can be the approximate recommended flow time?

Still depends on bog size.
