Took a NY subway years ago. A street performer dressed like some kind of futuristic alien was playing saxophone very loudly and horribly. His pitch: "I am from the planet Xenon. I will keep playing saxophone terribly until you give me money." Everyone threw coins and bills at him. He stopped playing and then he took his high-art to the next subway car.

Watching all the people in costumes at the train station reminds me of the absolute weirdness that happens when there’s a convention on in central London. You know your getting close to the convention centre when half the train is full of cosplayers (it’s an even more surreal experience when you leave at the end of the day, and you see a Pokemon trainer, Darth Vader, and the Doctor all sitting on the DLR on their way home).

Here in Japan, it's always surprising when you think your train car is maxed out, but 10 more people manage to get on at the next stop. And the next. All in complete silence. Just looking at the video with the bag lady, I'm thinking you can get at least 5 more people in there, easy. People gotta get to work, man.

I’ve actually made one of those “skin sheddings” in an art class! You use tape and wrap it around appendages with the sticky side out, then you take another layer and wrap sticky side in, then you cut it with a letter opener (one of the ones with the plastic bit to protect your arms from getting nicked) and then you tape it together again. A couple students dressed theirs in clothes and hid them in trees and didn’t tell anyone where they were, so it was a surprise for everyone.
