I remember that my mom let me skip school that day so we could go see the flyover instead of being stuck at school and hearing about it on the news. I still clearly remember how that day was like, and I guess that's one advantage of having an ex-AF mom that loves aircraft!

The day it crashed I was to be on that aircraft, along with my two brothers. My flight from Phoenix to Bradley was so very late and we never flew. It was devastating to me not just for the horrible loss of life but for the Nine-O-Nine. I was so glad to have been one of the sponsors with my name right under the co-pilot’s window. RIP to those aboard that day in October and RIP to my friend the Nine-O-Nine.

My father in law flew B-24s in WW2 when he was in his early 20s. He said it was like flying a dump truck. He said B-24s were a handful and notorious for wanting to wallowing all over the sky, especially when they were loaded and in up in thin air. He said the scariest part was simply trying to stay in formation and not run into the planes around them that were also struggling to stay in formation. Like most WW2 vets, he's gone now, passed away in the '90s.

Also the fact my parents and my friends' parents were all of the WW2 generation, many of them veterans of the war, hearing them talk and tell their stories of those days was a big influence in my formative years. I'm sure it had a lot to do with why I ended up in the USAF on various jets including B-52s in the '70s and '80s.

That B-24 is Diamond Lil, part of a CAF squadron out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. She winters at Meacham in Ft. Worth, then tours all summer. She's the 25th B-24 off the line out of 18,482 built. A crash during training flights early in her career saw her converted to transport duty rather than as a bomber. Collins claims to have the only B-24 BOMBER flying, which is how their B-24 is configured. Lil has been down for over two years, but has three new engines and has been flying since November, 2018. She has a busy tour schedule set for 2019. You can read more here: commemorativeairforce.org/aircraft/3

Actually, we often shut off the outboard engines on FIFI because when she taxis at smaller airports, the outboard props can break the lights along the taxiways. This is especially true at airports in the north where the lights are taller to account for snow. She broke one in New Orleans last year, I believe, when those engines weren't shut down.
