As a kid I had a model of Man O'war, which I decorated and painted myself. I would admire it for hours, imagining what it must be like to fly or even just see a real Mustang. Then one day I was walking casually along, near the airport in Windsor Ont., and I heard that whistle, that clean, mean growl approaching from somewhere behind and above - what was it? Not Man O'war but one of its counterparts, of course. It came roaring over the airfield and pulled up into a graceful barrel roll and sped off out of sight. I was smitten even more than before. I can't hear that sound, without becoming a kid again; and looking up in the hope of catching even just a glimpse! Thanks for sharing this wonderful "fountain of youth." :)

I have loved the P-51 Mustang since I was a young boy back in the 1950s, and read about it in WW2 history books. Never learned to fly myself, but have always dreamed of sitting in the cockpit of one of these thoroughbreds of the skies and traversing the clouds. It was on my "bucket list" until I discovered I had heart disease, and would never qualify as a pilot. That doesn't mean i cannot ride as a passenger and still experience the thrill to "...slip the surly bonds of earth, and dance the skies on laughter silvered wings." I would even sign a disclaimer to hold the pilot exempt from any responsibility if I should breathe my last as we touched down after such a flight. I would die a happy man.

@douglasbmeyer Жыл бұрын
"...we won the war because of it......." Well, kinda. Kinda, sorta. There's no doubt that this and the P-47 were decisive tactical advantages, but strategically it was certainly a cooperative effort. For example: the "sound itself" was not American--it's British, of course. And, of course, our "friends", the Russians, kind of kept our backsides out of trouble by throwing the blossom of their humanity--an entire generation of young people--into the meat grinder so that we could have a stable Western Europe for several future generations.

@jackandfriends36588 жыл бұрын
Spitfires are beautiful, but not beautiful enough to take the Mustang title. Plus, the Mustang has a slightly higher top speed, much longer range, arguably more maneuverable, and finally, nothing beats the bubble canopy. But I say again, Spitfires are gorgeous.
@tSp2898 жыл бұрын
X-it Dustless Blasting Well, this was about aesthetics, which is entirely subjective, but OK, I'll bite. You're not 100% correct. The most-produced griffon-powered spitfires were actually faster than the P-51D/K. The top speed of the P-51D was 703 km/h, and the Mk XIVe was 722 km/h. The very fastest variants of the P-51 (the ultra lightweight one that took advice from the Griffon spits' designers at Supermarine and Rolls Royce) were faster than the fastest Spitfires, but they were also very late war and only a couple of hundred were produced. Later racing-model P-51s used the Griffon engine in them. Between the majority-production fighters in the air in 1944, Griffon spits were actually faster. They also had a MUCH better climb rate and were considerably more manoeuvrable, and had a higher service ceiling, lower wing loading and a better roll rate. Griffon spits had either 2 Mk II Hispano 20mm cannons and 2 Browning .50 cals, or 4 Mk V Hispanos, capable of firing high explosive shells and/or AP incendiaries. The P-51 was better at the role it was designed for, which was as a bomber escort and tank buster, because it had a much longer range, and could carry more bomb load in practice, since the spits would often have to carry a drop tank to even get to battle on long range ground strike missions. The P-51 was still a top-tier fighter, but in pure fighter v fighter instances, the Spitfire was more dangerous. Also, the Griffon spits after the earlier Mk. XIVs had a bubble canopy based on the P-51s. Oh, and here's a quote from William Dunn: US fighter ace, who flew numerous types of allied fighters: "I have been asked, numerous times, which fighter aircraft I thought was the war's best. It's impossible to positively say which was best without taking into consideration the type of mission being flown. If we are speaking of air-to-air combat, I say the Spitfire is my choice- it was fast, high manoeuvrable, a good gun platform, and without any bad habits in flight. For dive-bombing and close air support operations, I take the P-47 Thunderbolt. She could cary a mixed load of munitions for all sorts fo targets, she could survive in a heavy flak environment, and she'd generally get you safely home if you were shot up. For long-range bomber escort missions, the P-51 Mustang would be my selection. She could fly for up to eight hours and fight off attacking enemy fighters in the distant target areas. Each aircraft I've mentioned was perfectly suited for its primary mission. Now, if I had to make the choice of one fighter aircraft above all the others - one that I'd rather have tied to the seat of my pants in any tactical situation - it would be, without any doubt, the world's greatest propeller-driven flying machine - the magnificent and immortal Spitfire."

@@chuck6187 - That engine is a 100% British design, licenced for piece-by-piece EXACT replication in the U S. by Packard. The British also were who the P-51 was originally developed for, originally with the Allison V-1710 V-12, a much more reliable, but somewhat less powerful engine (mainly at higher altitudes). Since the Merlin was already equipped with a two-stage two-speed supercharger, it didn't make sense to spend time developing a whole new induction system for the Allison. Both engines served well in their respective aircraft throughout the war. Some Merlibs have even been fitted with the much stronger connecting rods from the Allison...
