We run a small plumbing and heating company just outside of London, had a guy in for an interview that suggested bending copper tube is a 'thing of the past' and could do it all in soldered fittings just as well. Mentioned he refused to carry tube benders on his van, as it was a waste of space.........Forgotten his name already, as he didn't get the job. It's nice to see it done properly.

This is a superb example of consistency when bending. Using a spring will give you a slightly different shaped bend every time, and compared to this would look like a dogs dinner. For any apprentice watching, learn this, or any other methods out there ( and I use a different method to this, but still get the same accurate results ) and stick with it. Speed will come with time and soon you’ll be bending pipes quicker than someone using elbows and soldering them. The advantages of bending pipes are - * it’s neater * it won’t leak * lower flow resistance, leading to longer pump lifespan * no hot works permit if you’re on site Very neat job you did there, I bet the customer was thrilled with the installation when you finished.

Definetly good at pipe bending, On commercials we were always given fittings to use as a mitre is easier for foil lagging but not many bend much 28mm

Tight work, and great demonstration. Bending over elbows any day! I was taught to always use the longest stretch of pipe you can ie. preferrably a single piece between junctions and endpoints. Bends are not only cheaper than elbows, cleaner than soldering, more leakproof than any fitting, the better flow also means less turbulence so less noise and better pressure.

Just wondering if laying underfloor is taught differently in England.I have been in the industry for some forty years mostly working in Scandinavia, the Netherlands,Germany and the middle east on industrial contracts.Dont you lay the pipe allowing for the returning pipe from each circuit to loop alongside the flow so that you dont have as much of a temperature difference and making the overall layout more efficient rather than losing temperature further away from the manifold.Simply staggering the loop to allow for a returning loop is how i was taught.Keep up the good work.

In the last ten years I have hardly ever used a pipe bender, too fiddly & time consuming, difficult to use in a tight space etc.. Soldered elbows all the way. If you're worried about flow rates, use 2 x 45 degree elbows at the corners, or go up a pipe size. In any case use swept elbows near the boiler. But whatever, impressive skills & bending, & nice vid.

Do you use standard lagging? Because I find lagging pipe bends a bit messy and using elbows you can make a neater finish with the lagging, especially with a thick lagging. Even though i appreciate the flow is more important and better with bends.
