This is actually Struthers OH, I grew up on top of the hill during the 1960's and 70's and we would ride our bikes down to that area and watch trains for hours on end. And during the summer, you could hear those same screeching and breaking sounds overnight with the windows open, you fell asleep to those sounds, awesome. When I listen to Pink Floyd's "Echoes", it reminds me of the summer nights when i was growing up. Very cool video. Thanks.

Same here, I remember how wierd it was when the squealing sounds stopped. The 60's & 70's were great years to grow up in Struthers !

Fantastic! The first scene is shot next to the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Campbell Works which was the first of the mills to be closed (1977). Although I can see in the background at Gateway Yard the coke plant as well as the huge YS&T pipe and spike plants on the Struthers side of the river were still going in '79. I stood on that footbridge from the P&LE employees parking lot in the 80s and used my Betacam to film P&LE and Chessie trains. But the best was already over by then as four of the six integrated mills (YS&T Campbell, YS&T Brier Hill, USS Ohio Works, Republic Haselton Works) in the Valley had shut down by then. Sharon Steel and Republic's Warren Works (later LTV, WCI, Severstal) also closed. Thankfully, V&M operates part of Brier Hill and is expanding with more to come.

Man I wish I was older or alive in some cases when all the manufacturing was going on in Youngstown I’d love to see more videos of center street area from 60s and 70s before it all collapsed.

I work for Sperry Rail Service and test along the CSX line there atleast once a year. I always look over towards where the P&LE RR yard used to be. So sad to see it looking the way it does today. This video is priceless and thank you very much for sharing it.

I was born in Youngstown in 74. I Saw Youngtown dying as a child. It's a shame how Youngstown just gave up. They didn't even try. Now there isn't even a General Motors. Pittsburgh at least moved on to different industries. Thanks for this video. I had forgotten about Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad.

No GM plant? I got one better. Dayton,Ohio. Dayton had 10 GM plants in the metro area. The most of any town outside of Michigan. One is left and GM wants this plant sent to mexico. It is not running at capacity either.

seeing this video takes me back to my teen years . I grew up in Mckees Rocks (West Park) and ran around on the Railroad with my brother Harry . I miss the sounds and the smell of engines moving and running . we also played on the Montour Railroad as well . my Uncle Ernie worked there until they shut down . Thank You for posting . Ray in Pa.

Wow Thanks for posting this modern railroading has nothing like this I should know I've been an engineer for CSX for 16 years I grew up in the Warren area and went to YSU in the mid 90's and this was all gone already I sometimes still see the older P&LE gons (repainted CSXT) in Willard yard but even this equipment is starting to disappear replaced by junk from Mexico and China, yes they imported railcars now. A glimpse of what real railroading was all about Thanks again!!!

A lot of domestic "mini-mills" were also responsible for the fall of the huge integrated steel works that used to exist in Youngstown and elsewhere in the U.S.

The old guys used say, "They'll never tear it down. That's how we won The War." And then they tore it down, cut it up and shipped it off. So now we're left with memories and grainy videos. All too soon the memories will dissipate like blown out storms. Just these ghostly images remain to tell the story.
