Hunter-gatherer communities have had tens of thousands of years to fine-tune their parenting strategies, and although most of us live in vastly different societies today, we can learn a great deal from ancient practices - practices that, not that long ago, were common in Western culture as well. Joined by her three-year-old daughter Rosy, Dr. Michaeleen Doucleff lived with families in three of the most revered cultures in the world to find out why their children are less easily angered and more independent and thoughtful than our western offspring. It turns out that raising a child is a TEAM effort, and Doucleff breaks this down into four elements: togetherness, encouragement, autonomy, and minimal interference. With specific, easy-to-follow instructions and a wealth of resources, this book will simplify and soften interactions with the tiny humans in your household.
Michaeleen Doucleff, PhD is a reporter for NPR's Science Desk and the global health and development blog Goats and Soda. Prior to joining NPR, Doucleff was an editor at the journal Cell, where she wrote about the science behind pop culture. She has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree in viticulture and enology from the University of California, Davis. She lives with her husband, daughter, and German shepherd, Mango, in San Francisco.
Julie Lythcott-Haims is the New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult and is a regular contributor with CBS This Morning on parenting. She volunteers with the hospital program No One Dies Alone. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner of over thirty years, their young adults, and her mother.
