Back when I was a P-plater we used to wrap Toranas around trees and did donuts instead of single peggers... and when we did a car up, we'd paint it in grey primer and buy the cheapest set of hotwires, peanuts or 12 slot mags we could find in the Trading Post that week. when my dad showed me his old cars when he was in his 20s and even early 30s he had monaros one tonners toranas that all looked like showcars and had big lines of all his mates cars on the beach and side of the road at a car meet lined up with 10 plus cars all cruising. funnily enough his second car he ever bought a lj gtr xu1 torana has been kept up until this very day in all original trim and nothings been touched on it except for maintenance and looks as good as wehn he bought it back in the late 70s of the first owner. you look at the p platers of todays and they all drive around in commys and falcons with the same wheels either simmons fr1 or reps, walkinshaw wheels on the commys and vertini wheels or the stock fg falcon wheels. they dont take care of their cars with faded paint cracks in the front and rear bars dirty cars and nothing really unique like it used to be in the older days where reds greens blues yellows where more of a common car colour to see. now days every brand new car is either made in black white or silver unless its a performance car which aus doesnt make anymore

Legend says the red p plates exist for natural selection, so if you see someone with green Ps then they're less deadly. And P1 is Red because it means that you should use a red commodore because red makes you go faster and is more fully sick

Shortly after my P plate era, i bought an XE Falcon with 3-3 and four speed. A few safety features which prevented me from crashing it was an underpowered motor, and a very notchy gearbox, which both kept you alert, and prevented you going too fast! If you've ever driven an XE 3-3 over the Blue mountains, you'll understand why I never did burnouts or wrapped it around a tree. It could never produce the force required.

@noelgibson5956 Heh nice. My P-plate car was a ba xr6. But after a few years I also bought an XE Falcon. Mine had the 4.0 250 crossflow though not the 3.3. Even that though wasn’t much chop and so didn’t have to worry about speeding tickets and on a steep enough hill even with your foot to the floor it would slowly start to lose speed, can’t fault it for reliability though I daily drive it for 3 years and despite being clapped out and using a bit of oil it never let me down. Had to replace door handles fairly frequently though. I never got to drive a 3.3. Though. My Cousin had an xe with one in it but ripped it out almost immediately and dropped in a turbo Barra. I’ll always love my XE and will probably never part with it, but it’s retired from daily duties and only comes out on weekends these days.

the licenses in australia are you first get your Learners after you turn 16 and have done the test you have to do a minimum of 100 hours driving including night day wet and dry driving over a year and can only be done with somebody who has their full license, next is p plates that allows you to drive solo and with passengers but restricts you from driving turbo petrols and cars with 8 or more cylinders (only exception is a turbo diesel) then after that its the second stage of p plates then tis full open license where you can drive whatever you want and then you have ones for motorbikes trucks dangerous goods etc

I am old. My first car was a 1976 Toyota Corolla in the legendary baby shit brown colour. I bought it from a little old lady for $500 in 1996. I stacked it into a concrete wall on a freeway entrance at 80 kph two years later. Because the AM radio didn't work, I had a crappy boombox on the rear parcel shelf- it ended up on the dash! I got out to have a look at the damage, and the front right headlight was pointing sideways- and it still worked! I limped it home, took the front side panel off, jumped on it, did a bit of crowbarring, put it back on, and it was as good as new! Then I gave it to my ex girlfriend coz I'm a legend. The end.

God i miss being a p plater. It was a whole different time. I bought a VL Turbo for $1500 in like 2005 or smth. It was dropped so low it was practically undriveable. And coz my stupid arse was so young, i didnt take care of it at all. Still lasted 5-odd years beofre it essentially exploded n i left it to rust out. Fuck i miss that thing!

Back in 1978 when P plates were only displayed for 12 months, I wrote a letter to the Chief commissioner of police asking him for permission to obtain my semi licence while still on P plates. So yes after a few lessons I now had a licence to drive semi trailers only 7 months after getting my car licence. Then I got a job driving tow trucks at 18 years old, then moved onto driving semi trailers hauling shipping containers at 22 years old, finally giving it away at 49 whist driving semi trailers for Australia Post for a career as a prison officer
