Perotinus, the first true composer in the modern sense, and one of my favorite musicians. Incredible how close his music appears to a certain minimalism. In fact he is a composer much loved by Steve Reich, who was inspired by him for his composition Proverb. A composer in advance of 800 years, that's not a little I would say ...

With regards to the burning of Notre Dame: Let us not despair. The great Cathedrals have suffered fires before. Notre Dame de Paris will be rebuilt, as it has been before, as so many other ancient temples of Christianity and Christian culture have before. No great Cathedral was built within merely a few years -- most were built over the space of several centuries, with different materials and techniques, all in service of extraordinary beauty representing the glory of God. As we enjoy this wonderful work from Pérotin, the first great master of polyphony, let us rejoice and be grateful for all the culture and history which we have inherited.

+Karl Thanks for taking the time to reply. As a nonmusician I'm not able to detect what you believe to be chaotic. If it's not too much trouble are you able to point to what is a better performance in your view? I'm sincerely interested in the question of authenticity, but I have no musical education apart from many, many years of listening. This performance does have a harsh quality which I frankly enjoy, because I enjoy being disturbed (at times) by music, but perhaps that is the wrong response for music like this to elicit. Thanks again
