Hello dear friend I wanted first of all that I enjoy hearing you lecture and teach Second thing you said it is not the mechanic's fault that there is dirt in the engine Some of them do have vehicles that come to me in the garage that I remove the valve covers protest there a lot of silicone that penetrates the rubber into the valves

Mike to answer the question on why we pulse with modulate the actuator solenoid is as follows. On GM vehicles a 50% modulation is the hold position for the cam phaser. In other words, at 50% the magnetic field surrounding the solenoid is strong enough to hold the plunger in its middle position. This blocks all the oil passages. No oil flows in or out of the cam phaser. A higher percentage allows the oil to flow into one side of the phaser and exhaust out the other side, creating the movement of the phaser. The process is reversed ( less than 50%) to move the cam phaser in the opposite direction. If the ECM were to use a 100% PWM on the solenoid, it would very quickly burn out the windings in the solenoid or damage the driver in the ECM. This is why the ECM doesn't use a 100% on-time modulation on any device it controls by PWM. I hope this clears this up for you. thanks for all your training videos.

Congratulations with your new arrival. I knew very little about vvti before this video very helpful. When doing a timing chain you usually have to blow air into the camshaft gallery to get the timing to go back to base timing. Instead of doing this can you just disconnect the solenoid and run the engine. Many thanks for the information.

Awesome lesson. Thanks for covering all the bases. I've been running into a lot of vvt lately (nissan 3.5) that have had intermittent issues. Most have had very poor oil quality. One or two were fixed by oil changes, but I had one I was called back to after a few weeks it threw codes for both banks. Will have to run the scope and data pid checks to see what is going on.

An oil pressure test adapter would be kinda interesting. If after a few quick tests, it might lead to recommending another engine. An oil change and new phasers might help, what else is left cam bores in heads or lower end. Mike is right, oil change intervals are crucial. 1 a lot of vehicles are leased.2 a, oil change intervals can be 6000 miles or more. b,OE says oil consumption of 1500miles per quart is ok. 3 owner never checks oil until light comes on. Perfect Storm.

I just changed my oil & filter a few weeks before problems that gave me a P0011. Used the same brand and weight of synthetic oil as before, but this time opted for the 'high mileage' version. (Car has 130K). The screens on my solenoids look clean and clear, as do the oil and cams in general. So any chance the 'high mileage' oil is causing the problems? Car idles fine and runs well at higher speeds and level surfaces, but struggles on hills and lower speeds.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt that the oil being high mileage or not affected it. My gut says you have an intermittent failure. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@shauno3697
@shauno3697 3 жыл бұрын
About a buck O'four into the video, you're using a jumper to actuate the vvt solenoids manually and it raised a concern or two for me. I've met a couple engines that can idle pretty well on a stretched/jumped chain. Let's say the chain is stretched and jumped one tooth. Is there a point in your diagnosis that you have to ponder and decide not to jumper the solenoid? Is the potential there, with a jumped chain, to over advance the timing to the point you cause valves to crash? If so, how do you decide your next move?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Shaun, ohhh thats a great point. Never ran into that before. My guesstimate would be if the vehicle jumped time enough to crash with vvt command...it likely wouldn't be running. But honestly, I have no idea what would/could happen in the scenario. My curiosity is peaked, that's for sure! Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

I don't think flushes now a days is ever a good Idea but rater a recipe for disaster. Just my opinion. I always tell customers to use synthetic oil in my experience synthetics are less likely to sludge and I have proven in videos where synthetic actually started to clean the engine.

Hey, Mike. How would you check duty cycle with a multi meter and how would you know if the reading is ON Time or OFF Time if you did not have a scanner to watch the pids? I have a multi meter with Duty Cycle and I was watching a video from Eric.O about an EGR valve issue and did not fully explain the duty cycle with the meter and how he hooks it up. He shows a display on the meter and says that it is the OFF time and not the On time. That you for the excellent video as always!
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey BB MD, thanks for watching! Let me answer your question with a question...does it matter? IF you have nothing to compare the duty cycle against (the PCM's command read on a scanner) then why does the % matter? Simply checking that there's power and ground to the solenoid when running is probably enough. Hook one lead into the PWM power feed and the other lead into ground. Most meters aren't fast enough to read the signal and will average the voltage. you should see something other that battery+ and 0. Does that kinda make sense? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@bbmd2200
@bbmd2200 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Sir.It does. I have an OTC multi meter with Duty Cycle. I was just trying to use the feature when my Autel Maxidas is not with me. Also, Eric was only trying to see if the PCM was duty cycling the EGR valve.

Can I make a request? Communications network and all the different types of networks and signals. It's real hard diagnosing a network problem as an example on a VW when you don't know what the K line signal is supposed to look like or how it really works. I've read it takes priority over the CAN. Also can a Lin bus signal take out a CAN bus or any other combination of network signals like that? If you have a CAN line being taken out by a module how do you know the Lin bus for example isn't taking it out at the gateway or something like that? So many questions.

How would you diagnose an advanced camshaft fault after testing wiring and sol movement? How do you know if a phaser is stuck?
@bobpalmer4740
@bobpalmer4740 2 жыл бұрын
ok since i sent the last question maybe you can answer this one. i changed out the cam phasers the timing chain the guides and the tensioner. and the water pump and chains and guides. so it has been running rather well since then. now my girls called and said she is getting p0011 p0016 p0017 and it is running a bit rough! so based on those being cam over advanced which is hardly possible what might i look for? i did install new cam solenoids and then got tons of codes. so i put the old solenoids back in. in testing them i got clicks and 12 ohms so i figure those were good. i told my girl to reset the codes and let me know the first code she gets just in case the other codes are just from the first code. so do you have any other ideas? maybe a crank sensor it kind of doubt cam sensors if both cams are setting codes.

Most of the problems I come across with vvt are lack of use. IE. NOT being revved hard enough for the vvt to kick in. I bought a Honda that was sluggish and had idle drop problems the previous owner never revved it beyond 2000 rpm, the same can be said of a Toyota which probably never exceeded 40mph and had never been revved by the lady owner. I changed the oil and gradually began revving them up to the rev limiters and all of the sudden on the Honda the idle drop problems stopped and then with full vvt working it went like a scalded cat. the Toyota took a little longer for the new oil to get through the cam phaser and ungum it, but eventually this succeeded and now is transformed. Be very careful of fault codes on vvt systems often parts are not faulty they just need to be gently persuaded to work again. Mini owners take note ! I have resurrected many later engines by revving and an oil change,however a diagnostic machine is required and a procedure to be followed, but not an new timing chain kit !!! if the chain is rattling unfortunately it may have been left too late for this to work.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mazdaman, thanks for watching! That all depends on the type of system. This Buick in this video actually phases the cams at idle. VVT or VTEC operates a bit differently, only turning on at that higher RPM. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

i changed the timing chain and phasers it had a p0018 now i have an engine stumble when it gets warm. no codes i can hear the intake cam rattle some intermittent if i unplug the intake solenoid that rattle goes away. it has yet to set a code. so how long will it take to set a code if the intake vvt solenoid is going bad? also, my engine has 2 exhaust cams and phasers so both the cams little notches are set to 10 ish o'clock . found that out the hard way. so i wonder of the intake phaser is failing. the engine rpms vary lots at stops after the car has driving maybe 20 miles and if i put it in neutral it will smooth out or if i reve it some. so does this sound like the phasers may be bad or the solenoids. thanks

Hey, so a rich code and a timing type code. I suggest going after the P0014 first. The P0172 could be caused by the P0014. Inspect the oil first. Make sure it's clean, properally filled and the right viscosity. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

how can i delete the 2.4 Ecotec i have p0016 and p0017 codes and the engine has poor performance the codes set immediately. changed the crank sensor. i think the phaser/s failed but may have jumped time any ideas. so it sounds like it may have jumped a tooth on the chain. would these codes represent the chain to jump on the crank only. or might the phasers failed or cam to cam timing out if adjustment? the oil level was run low so maybe the guides failed? Does anyone have some ideas? i changed the vvt phasers and still get these codes. thanks

ive changed a new 2018 camrys oil with 10K on the factory fill. sent it off to blackstone labs and they didn't seem too concerned with the amount of wear metals in the oil, or that it had done any long term damage. the vehicle has gone through 3 more 10k oil changes and now has 42k on it. but only time will tell glad its not my car.

I've been doing the maintenance on a fleet of Toyota rental cars for a number of years. They do no more than recommended maintenance and sometimes a little less. They often put over 160K on them and I've never seen any mechanical problems with the engines. Engine manufacturing has changed a lot in the past 40 years.

I don't know why engine oil flushes get such a bad rep. It's like not wanting to do a back flush on a plugged heater core because you're worried it might start leaking... They're definitely not a replacement for proper maintenance and I don't believe in doing them on a healthy engine but if your other options are engine replacement/overhaul then why not give it a shot? Ya you need to communicate with the customer but that's supposed to happen with _every_ work order...
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
The reasoning is because a flush looses stuff up that could plug up other areas. On a heater core flush you can get everything out. On an engine, stuff gets stuck...what if that flush causes a chunk of junk to get stuck and block a main oil feed to a cam? Then the cam fails...who's paying? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@ecwurban
@ecwurban 4 жыл бұрын
@@GoTechTraining Customer pays as they were going to be buying an engine anyways. To be clear I don't believe in engine flushes as "routine maintenance". The times I've used them is when there is what seems like a mechanical problem with an engine on an older/abused vehicle where it's not worth the money to go through with the actual repair. Mainly I just get curious how oil flushes have such a taboo stigma to them. Sure there are risks but there are risks with everything. What if a vehicle comes in with a bad lifter and you opt to replace the lifters and the camshaft on that bank? What if _anything_ happens to that engine? No matter how unrelated... Drops a valve seat, spins a bearing, gets a dead hole... How are you going to explain that had nothing to do with your work...?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
All good points. So you're saying when the customer is left with no choices an engine flush is potential repair...with the full understanding that it may or may not work and it may or may not cause more damage. I can live with that! :) Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
