This tip "pulled my ass out of the fire." Back story: 10 months ago, my check-engine light comes on, code 420. This was a month before I had to have the 2-year emissions test. I didn't have the money. I ignored it. I got a letter from the DOT that my tags were suspended due to failure to get emissions tested. But when my tag stickers expired at the end of this year; I had to do something. This worked for me....got me through emission testing....worked great! 2004 Toyota Camry, 2.4 L, 220,000 miles. Note that in my state there is no visual inspection beyond looking at the under-carriage with a mirror on a rod. My new installation was shiny; I roughed up the spark-plug-non-foulers with 80 grit sandpaper, dipped them in bleach and let them sit in the sun. This helped "age" them and make the modification not so obvious. Good luck to all, and OP, thank you...you saved me. Edited to add: In my state, there is no tail-pipe test. They only hook their tester to the connector under your dash. When drilling out the anti-fouler, use lots of oil to lubricate....it'll help to stop the drill bit from biting in to the anti-fouler.

Congrats, I’m glad to help anyone rip the system. Government gives people money that don’t deserve it and then takes the working middle class person who lives check to check and makes them try to spend their hard earned money for shit that doesn’t even benefit them, emissions is a scam in my book
@armchairtin-kicker503 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I suppose bluing the anti-fouler parts would be a prudent move, keeping the "emissions modification" discrete. That stated, I went to a junkyard with the intention of picking up a used cat, for a sibiling, from a wrecked vehicle. The staff member informed me that it was against the law for them to sell cats. I told him, "some racket the state has setup." He nodded in acknowledgement.

I told them to go f*** themselves. I went to my local AutoZone and picked up those non fouler's and went to my Menards and picked up a $10 brand new bit and it took about 5 minutes to drill out the non fouler. it was a pain in the ass to remove the O2 sensor but once I got it out and put the non foulers there it passed emissions with flying colors.

I just ended up fixing the old manifold by repairing the cracks. I works perfectly now.

This absolutely works! My check engine light (P0420 code) has been on for the last year and a half. My son put this on, we had the codes reset, drove the car for 100 miles and the check engine light never came back on. Got my emissions test today and I passed. Had tried putting all types of cleaners (seafoam, redline cleaner, Lucas fuel injector treatment) and none of them remediated the light. My son had to drill the hole a little larger than stated in the video to fit my O2 sensor and we added the steel wool as mentioned. OBD2 code p0420 doesn't necessarily mean your catalytic converter is bad. Actually your cat should never go bad and should last the lifetime of the engine. The only reason they ever need to be replaced is because there's a problem. Even if 🐈 is internally FUBAR, (clogged) you can just gut the 🐈 and weld it back on. This way is probably much easier but I sometimes you got to do things the hard way. LOL good stuff BTW

Very interesting; I've seen this done on vehicles that were being experimented on with a brown's gas kit in order to fool the computer. One thing to bear in mind - the problem could be a plugged up catalytic converter, and fooling the computer to pass emissions inspection won't prevent it from ruining the engine.

Ruining is a strong word. A clogged cat, even a severely clogged one, should only affect performance of the engine. In an extreme case, one could argue higher temperatures developing for the exhaust valves. But that would likely only happen after years of being clogged. I have seen that with crushed tail pipes. But that’s a major restriction compared to a clogged cat

I just tried this on my 2002 Toyota Camry and it worked. Installed it and disconnected the battery for a few minutes to clear the code. When I started it afterwards the engine was dying and bogging out at idle. Was able to drive around for 10 minutes and then it ran fine. Passed Illinois emissions test today 5/17. $7 fix as opposed to $1200 for Midas to replace the catalytic converter. Thanks mate!!

For those complaining that this causes smog, you have a point, but it's not as bad as you think. The CEL comes on when the cat drops to 95% efficiency which is a pretty high threshold. Spacing the O2 sensor back might stretch it to 90%, so just a little more smog in the air, not like it's a 1970's polluter. If you do this hack and it doesn't work, you've got other problems, a vacuum leak, leaky injector, bad coil, up to and including replacing the cat.
@stephenpowell60017 жыл бұрын
A bad ignition coil was to blame for me. Cylinder misfire sends unburned fuel/air mixture right on to the cat. Coating it, making it less efficient. I am going to try cataclean, 91-93 octane gas, and a long trip on the interstate. If that don't work, I will try the oven cleaner in the O2 port hole. Then the spacers if them don't work. Before I buy a new cat.

I'm not from Cali so I couldn't say but I don't see why they would and if they do just go to another service shop, some places are way more particular than others so look for a just basic corner shop not some place that's going to do some crazy 400 point inspection

spafro101 I removed my o2 sensor and sprayed half a can of seafoam in and then replaced the sensor and ran my car outdoors till the smoke stopped. Not only is my code gone but the car doesn’t stink when I get on the thruway like it used to and i gained some power back. Sounds like a better fix than this. This is just tricking the computer and does nothing to get fix the reason it threw the code. It should keep the code away though if all you need is to pass inspection. I had the option of trying this but decided to try cleaning the cats with sea foam and I’m glad I did because my engine runs much better.

This trick worked for me. 2000 Honda Insight. I still plan on replacing the catalytic converter because emissions do cause health problems in congested areas. It was a pain keeping the washer from falling on the threads when I put it in the cat so I put a wire twist tie around it and tightened a rubber band around the trailing wire. Then made sure to take the twisty tie and the rubber band off so it wouldn't burn up.

It worked for my 01 4.3L . But..... the 1/2" drill bit did not work. I had to get a 32nd" larger, and use a drill press to drill it out, leaving the wall of the adapter very very thin. So far so good though. In Atlanta, there is a serious debate about ending the emissions testing requirements. Only 4% ( as per a news cast I saw) of vehicles fail emissions, and our air is cleaner now than when there were far fewer cars on the road in the past. The old saying "they dont build them like they used to " does not hold totally true anymore. "They" are built better, cleaner, and more efficient than ever. Tax hawk groups are claiming the whole system is just a cash cow now, and has basically no effect on air quality. I would not be surprised if emissions requirements are ended here in metro Atlanta, and maybe other cities can follow.
