To anyone with this error code, CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUGS! The previous owner never changed them and I was in the process of replacing them when the far left-most spark plug well was dipped in oil. Got a lot of paper towels and kept drying it up. Started up ol girl and the error code was no more!

Are you sure this wasn't your valve cover gasket leaking? Sometimes those things leak and cause small misfires that mess with the 02 sensors and the cat.

The spark plug fouler works great. Only problem is that now in California during smog check the attendant will pass a mirror on a handle under the chassis or get down on the ground and look for an extender. If you have one on, you will fail smog, as they are not legal.

Carbon buildup can also trigger Code P0420. My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo threw up the code even tho there were no symptoms of bad cats or o2 sensor so I thought what if it's carbon buildup? So I used 2 cans of Seafoam Intake Cleaner and after following directions it killed Code P0420 and the check engine light never came back on

My muffler was making a popping sound today after changing spark plugs and ignition coil. I reinstalled the spark plugs after checking to see if they may have been damaged but they checked out fine. The rough idling i had before went away so i was pleased. However 30 seconds into turning my 2002 ford escape on this popping sound started and i see the muffler back fire. I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze with 1.4L engine it has 180,000 mile. I have been getting a P0420 code. It would go away and come back. Before replacing any parts do this. I fixed it just by disconnecting the Negative side on the battery 1st. Now find the computer it’s on the side where the battery is. It’s has 3 connectors on it. I disconnected all 3 connectors and cleaned each side male and female connector with CRC 05103 QD Electronic Cleaner. Let it dry 15 minutes. I plugged all 3 back in. I installed negative battery cable. I started and drove the car 50 miles. It never came back. Updated After driving the Engine light did come back. The same error code P0420 came back.

Not easy at all to remove cat converter. Non-foulers are illegal on o2 sensors in most states. Gas additives only work for a couple of hundred miles then the light comes back on. One 16 oz. bottle is now around $30.

That o2 sensor is the wrong one for starters, That's a downstream narrowband and the upstream is wideband these days which looks different then that one that also probably why you got a P0420 code.

Hi Saul, if you already replaced the catalytic converter then it's possible that the issue is coming from another parts. Please repair if there are leaks in the muffler or exhaust manifold, and inspect your front or rear oxygen sensor.

Hi Marixa, kindly check the condition of the spark plug. If the condition is good, then the issue could be coming from the converter (needs replacement). If worn, you can replace the plugs and clear the code.

Hello, kindly check if there's any leak to the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and exhaust pipes pre-catalytic converter. Repair the leak, clear the code and complete several drive cycles afterwards. If the issue will continue to persist, please check the voltage reading of the downstream O2 sensor, this will tell you weather catalytic converter needs to be replaced.

You're supposed to put it on only the downstream so only the downstream is lower o2 reading.

@ChadHer the brackets should have a thread in the middle like normal o2 sensors I thought. Maybe you didn't realize but it should just screw in the middle of the bracket. If not you could also try.. wiring a capacitor between downstream o2 sensor and your ecm. There's videos for this as well. You can also try adding washers just to make less space for the sensor to poke into your cat. But honestly the way I passed my inspection with my cat code still triggering. I just cleared my engine codes. And got all 5 of 6 codes in ready mode. Than the cat code is the hardest to get in ready mode. So if you go to the shop with the cat sensor not in ready mode they will still pass you since the law let's 1 sensor be not ready.

@@peanbean1973 I seen some 02 bracket with thread but mine looks fixed cuz it doesn't have anything for a socket tool to turn it. Also thanks for the ready mode infos. After clear my codes, I drove over 100 miles and the evap monitor still show incomplete but everything else show "ok".

Hello we suggest checking for an exhaust leak. Testing an oxygen/O2 sensor or the catalytic converter is also recommended.

I have a Nissan frontier 06 190 thousand miles, getting a P0420 code bank 1 below threshold and sometimes it says bank 1 and bank 2 below threshold, I have put seafoam and cataclean in it and the code will clear for a day or two but then comes right back, ????

Hello nonda, p0420 It’s confirmed bank 1 sensor 2 high voltage. Sensor has been replaced but the code has reappeared on my 2013 Toyota RAV4 engine with low cat efficiency threshold. Eco mode goes off when the check engine pops up. I’ve tried solution 1. How many liters gasoline should I pour the 250ml cleaner into?

Hello I have a 2005 Lexus is300 . I have the same code p0420. I had it on once and it went away on its own..it came back few days ago so I took it to my mechanic and he’s telling me that I MUST change the catalytic converter and that There’s no other option. Which sounds like some nonsense to me. I’m not a mechanic myself but come on..There’s gotta be another way. I looked up how much a catalytic converter would cost me and it’s about 1,700 dollars at Oreilys! Can’t believe it. What do you recommend?

So I installed a catless downpipe and used an O2 extender on the downstream O2 sensor but still get the P0420 code at least once a day. Any tips or insight? Get a second extender to push it even further from the exhaust stream maybe?

P0420 is usually a permanent code that is stored in your computer. You won’t be able to clear it with a cheaper scan tool

Hi Dashty, you can check the exhaust system under your car. It looks like a bulge in the middle of the exhaust piping between the muffler and where the headers connect to the exhaust downpipes. If the bulge is not there, you do not have a catalytic converter.

Hi Chriz, we highly suggest you begin checking with oxygen sensor as issue with this is usually the source why P0420 registers. O2 sensor(s) on the upstream side of the catalytic converter to be specific.
