This 2005 Nissan Xterra runs great, except for that pesky Check Engine light is on!
In this case we have a classic P0430 - "Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold" trouble code.
Instead of loading up the expensive part cannon and replacing the converter, we use a little trick to make the engine computer happy about the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
DISCLAIMER: The technique shown in this video is for off-road use only ;)
Enjoy!
Ivan

Don't know about this redesigning the exhaust system. As an Eco warrior, I cannot condone polluting the atmosphere , especially for future generations.VW went down that route with their innovative secret software to try and decieve the global population and sending some unfortunates to an early demise, prematurely. The same applies to the generation of plastic which is ending up in the belly of whales and other sea creatures. The spirit of the law is all about saving the planet and not creating loopholes to try and circumvent them.

Yeah, it's a controversial topic. However, how much energy and resources and materials go into making a new catalytic converter from scratch? Probably more than you might think! So I think in the big picture this is still the lowest-impact solution :)

unfortunately Tom all manufacturers have been cheating emissions and still are. diesel dpf is a complete farce of fixing exhaust readings under test scenario but long term it wasting more fuel and resources to keep it working so it just spits the soot out on a highway regen cycle . Cat systems are pretty much useless for short trips . current modern car lifespan massive environment impact as is all the service parts manufactured keep them running right . better cars from late 80s to 2000 can have life cycle of 30 years and see over 1/4 million miles with hardly any part replacement and basic servicing, compare that to waste from a modern 2010 car in half that life span and see what better for environment . What comes out the tail pipe is just 1 factor of real world pollution but the world we live in is controlled by profit not logical science and engineering that really could make a difference .

Sorry to burst your bubble, Tom, but the CA wildfires of '17 just negated the ENTIRE WORLD'S emission controls on every single automobile and factory on the planet. Another volcanic eruption somewhere will negate the next 10 years. The tires I burned yesterday may have as well. :)

I drive a VW NOxmobile. I also spent a bunch of time reading up on the problem. In my air basin, light duty vehicles are 3rd down on the Pareto chart for NOx emissions. Heavy duty trucks and construction equipment were leading. So we are going after a fractional piece of the 3rd contributor. I realize that this mix is different depending on locale. I still fail to see how gouging this specific carmaker has or will help in total NOx contribution to the environment. For me, it was more about the US governmental authority than it was about the environment.

I've been working on cars for 17+yrs and never knew about this trick. Thanks for sharing it! I think nowadays CA emissions really screws people over in the name of saving the planet. I used to be able to buy and install the CATs myself for a couple of hundred dollars, not anymore. They're $600+ each now and you can't buy them from Autozone etc anymore. So all the sub $3k cars are getting 'recycled' now. Nevermind the fact that a lot of the stuff in cars is never really recycled thereby creating more pollution, not to mention the energy required to recycle them. Bottom line, more disposable things=more pollution.

One thing I've found on Honda, not sure if it applies to Nissan or not, is that with upstream A/F ratio sensors the downstream sensors do contribute to fuel control. On my 08 Odyssey w/150K miles, I had no sign of trouble (i.e. no MIL) but noticed one day that I had high fuel trims...up in the neighborhood of 20% total. I couldn't find a cause so since I had 150K I replaced both upstream sensors. That helped a little but fuel trims were still up in the 15% total range. I then replaced both downstreams and fuel trims dropped to zero and my mileage jumped from 13-14 mpg to 18 mpg. I see a lot of people complain of P0420/P0430 codes popping up with never a problem beforehand and wonder how many vehicles are out driving around just barely under the limit for setting a lean code but enough to damage the converters over time. O2 manufacturers say the O2's are life limited to around 100K miles. I always thought that was so they could sell more O2's but in my experience it's true. I've since done this on a couple of higher mileage Honda V6's and have seen the same results.

Hey Ivan. I have done the ‘electronic’ version of this fix. It’s just a small circuit with 2 resistors and a capacitor. Same idea, you are using the capacitor to slow the response to the computer by storing a charge. Works well and not as obvious.
@opl500
@opl500 6 жыл бұрын
Although in road salt country, you have to worry about corrosion affecting your circuit. Road salt gets everywhere. And if you're going to get that fancy, just take the O2 sensor out altogether and just have your RC circuit stand in for it.
@Ashroyer86
@Ashroyer86 6 жыл бұрын
opl500 he doesn't want it to be obvious so sensor stays in. They have visual state inspections to pass. Also, you can put your circuit anywhere that the wires are i.e under good so they're not always getting hit with salt. And if the connections are done right i.e heat shrink and such it should be fine.

Never done this myself but have seen them come in stacked up double on some cars. Wonder if it makes a difference on the type of cat testing the vehicle preforms. Indexed switch ration vs 02 storage capacity type. Would also be interesting to see when the 02 monitor runs if it throws a S2 slow response code? Remember shops make money and keep their doors open by selling parts we know are bad. In this case it is not loading the parts cannon. You proved the cats are bad.$25,000 fine here in the peoples republic of NY if we install a nonCARB cat on a CARB vehicle, I can only imagine if a shop here did this the EPA would have a field day with them haha. Have seen a lot of folks scrap their cars because of a 420 430 code here. $1500 cat on a $500 car....

Think $25K is the going rate all over and once they get looking it'll usually be the starting point for other violations with fines. Not me...I give them the price of the converter and my repair bill will state it. $25K buys a lot of supplies & new tools and we give the government enough $$ in taxes.

I had a friend just got popped on his diesel (12 Ram) for "inadequate exhaust" DEC pulled him over. He had to pay $3000 a DAY! Until it was repaired and reinspected by DEC. Never heard of such a thing till recently. DEC has been sitting at intersections around here and every diesel that drives by that is even slightly loud or roles coal gets popped. Locals are gonging insane because every one that has a 07 up diesel has it deleted.

In short, if you live in (or near) the city...you get it inspected. It isn't required at all in the other counties.

Saying this as a fellow NY'er who's actually sick of the CARB requirements. We have two cars that we drive. One just had the converter replaced a couple of years ago. FED equipped. The store I purchased it at has refused to honor the warranty. Yep...tripped the P0420 code after just over a year. I talked with their 'customer service dept' a few times and got stonewalled. Lets see " Well sir... You need to remove the converter and send it back to use at your expense" (I'm okay with that...the next part I'm not okay with) "If the converter shows any signs of overheating that voids your warranty.". News Flash! Converters get HOT! Ours does have a very slight 'blueing' which several shops in our area already said was 100% acceptable and the catalyst material was fine. White and still looked 100%. The slight blueing is due to the cheap material they used for the housing. That one will get replaced with a local purchased one (that will cost me 3x's due to the markup in this area.) Our 2nd one? Exhaust leak at the flex pipe going into the converter. Been told to fix that and see if it cleans up the P0420 code. I'm willing to spend a few bucks on that repair and seeing how it works, because this car is CARB required and the converter costs in excess of $800++++++++ Eric: You're 100% right. Many cars and trucks wind up in the scrap heap due to that repair expense. Ours is an older model, but the body is mint! And we just did the heads and brakes. (It's a Subaru) I'm 100% okay with clean air and water. I'd be willing to shell out a few hundred to replace this if needed and do it right. If the government wanted to ensure everyone was complying with these rules? How about trying to make it more affordable?!? They think we're just flushed with cash and can shell out mega bucks. Truth is? It's this crazy expense that forces poor people into finding ways to cheat as replacing the car or truck is also cost prohibitive. As for the Subaru- Went to a well known shop and asked if they could weld on a new flex joint. They refused. Direct quote "Our home office has cameras all over the shop to ensure we do not engage in that repair. The policy is to ONLY replace the entire converter assembly. We're here to make money and not run a charity." Pretty pathetic.

I had to do this on my 97 Monty Carlo I spent thousands of dollars trying to fix the problem went through 4 cats and couldn’t get the car fixed it didn’t matter what we did because we couldn’t find a cause for the failure the engine never used oil and it ran properly tried to get the state to exempt the car but was refused so I drove the car for years with one of these installed it saved my investment and I just kept all my paperwork just in case I got caught a few years later we were contacted by the cat manufacturer recalling the cats for this problem they had not been made properly for the car it was really nice to finally get it fixed because I do feel that with the Fowler installed it messed with the fuel ratios but I’m not for sure I never did a test to see but it could have been the fact that the cat was not there at all so I’m not sure I never ended up fixing the car by the time the recall was announced the car was at the scrapyard the 3.4 dual overhead cam v6 was a very fun car but it’s the definition of throw away after the it started leaking oil and it was the second time it happened just not worth the repair cost you always had to take half the car apart for any repair

Ivan, Great job. I did the same with my 06 Pathfinder years ago. This is a common issue with the Nissan V6 engine available on the Xterra, Pathfinder, Frontier or any Nissan Infinity model with the engine VQ40DE, with over 100K miles. They all have the same code for the driver side catalyst that their performance goes bellow Nissan specs. You can even find the same type of adapter that you can regulate the aperture for the O2 so it can be tune for best performance (common used on turbo mods so the check engine doesn't turn on) for under $25. This modification would not affect the performance of the vehicle or the emissions. because the catalyst still there and it is not obstructed just performing bellow Nissan specs. Worst case scenario you replace the catalyst with an aftermarket one that wont looks as good as the OEM but it is budget friendly and it will keep the emissions under control.

What about the Catalyst i/m monitor? I used two non foulers on my 2000 Nissan Maxima, and it cleared my Check Engine Light, but I failed inspection twice because my catalyst system monitor won't ready. It's the only monitor not ready, and is preventing me from passing my smog check. The guy at the smog shop just keeps telling me to keep driving it. I commute 50 miles a day, and it's been weeks already. Any thoughts?

You should try the method with wiring in a resistor and diode to keep downstream O2 sensor voltage around 0.45v. Also, many vehicles that use AFR sensors use downstream O2s in fuel trim calculation. I wonder what effect this modification would have in such vehicles.

just got code coming home from work, i dont have any experience with stuff like this, can you tell me a better location as to where on the drivers side that sensor is located, do i need a lift to find it/replace it? also, how does sensor go into that piece you drilled out and how did you attach it the the vehicle, thanks, sorry for being a newbie to repairs, thanks for sharing video

Don't be afraid to get dirty. Safely get under the vehicle and locate the sensor. It's straight-forward. The hard part is getting it out, as it may be rusted into the exhaust pipe.

Hey Ivan, I would be interested in doing some tests using different additives live BG’s 44K and Seafoam rather than the installed adaptor. Even driving it hard might wake up a lazy cat. Case in point my Cayenne turbo bought as a “mechanic special” had P0420,P0430 codes. These engines are known to use oil and the previous owner did not drive it hard. A couple weeks of Italian tune ups and no more codes even after 2 years.

Since the Frontiers have 4 cats, deleting the aft cats seems to eliminate the p4020 code with no issues so far. After all, the aft cats are not metered with o2 sensors.

@giuliom8520
@giuliom8520 2 жыл бұрын
@@dannymartinez8522 Removing Catalytic Converters does improve fuel economy since the engine is basically a big air pump. The more free flowing the air is through the engine, the more efficient it will be, because the engine doesn't need to burn as much fuel to pump air through.

I myself like other can't condone this fix/act. It does prove that the sensor is working and the efficiency of the "CAT" is down and the "Fix" is only a fix for the removal of the DTC, not the root cause. Does this vehicle have a Dual exhaust system? Or Is there a main collector "CAT" downstream from these Bank collector "CAT's". It could be said then that any emissions not treated by the "Spent Bank CAT" will be treated later down stream.
