Awesome little McGivering ingenuity that saved you some big bucks, Dan the fix it man. Can you imagine what it would have cost at a dealership repair shop without having the codes before hand. I just bought one of those code readers as I've had a yellow engine light on my Mercedes for several days now. Now that's a vehicle you don't want to fuck around with when it comes to repairs. So owning one of those obd2 scanners is a must have investment these days. Mine just came within 12 hrs from Amazon (gotta love their fast shipping). So I got the same two codes flagged as you did, the P0456 & P0422, with the first one several times. It still won't let me turn off the engine warning light manually, says it must be repaired first (I get that cause it would just keep getting tripped again). Now I know vehicle emissions are tested regularly in places like California, but I live in Canada and we don't have that tested here, at least not in the province of Alberta where I live. Now I'm a little too old & disabled to try this detection/fix myself. I definitely would have back when I was more agile. I would like to get an honest repair shop to do the test, just give them the codes and possibly show this video. All the leg work is done pretty much. Thank you so much for filming this and sharing it. I hope it's just as straight forward with my Mercedes SUV. ✌️
@KewlQT2 жыл бұрын
Just a side note. I went into a local repair shop in a franchise called Canadian Tire. They were going to charge me $160 (before taxes) just to read the code(s) that triggered the engine light. Nothing fixed or repaired, just a print out of any error codes and what selection of other issues that could be causing that. That's what made me more determined than ever to buy my own code reader. So glad I did it does a plenitude of other features. Battery condition checks which is essential in cold winter climates. Trip monitors, testing your driving style and the efficiency of the performance during a speed test. I'm not sure if it'll connect to my PC or if there's any need. Cheers.

@DantheFixitMan2 жыл бұрын
If you can find the evap test port, it usually has a green cap…try connecting it on either side of that by disconnecting the hose and putting the hose from your smoke machine on the hose that you disconnected. Best of luck to you. -Dan the Fix it Man

Evidently those small hoses are guaranteed to start leaking on any 1mz-fe engine that old due to years of engine heat. I replaced all the those hoses with silicon versions of pretty much the same size as the originals. Nice, snug connections. I also changed the gas cap. Now I just have a P0440 code that comes back after being cleared. Could be the charcoal canister or one of the switching valves.

@@KewlQT20 years? I have vehicles that have only 50,000 miles with that many years, other two have 120,000-151,000. If it’s a Toyota those cars are basically not even halfway through their life cycle. Nowadays when you buy something “new” you are paying not only double the worth of the vehicle, but also paying for subscription services for items that are supposed to come with the price of buying a brand new car! Since when is it necessary for car manufacturing company to charge people extra money for the privledge of accessing an auto start that’s already installed on a vehicle! Some of these car companies make you pay a subscription so your phone can send a signal to satellite back down to some server, back up and back down to your car so you can start a vehicle that’s only 100 ft away or so. If you don’t have access to the internet then you can’t start your car remotely, and even if you are 5 ft away you still can’t start your car that way because the what you really are paying for is access to the stupid software that’s already pre installed with the hardware on the car you already bought. ABSOLUTELY a waste and no sane American is going to buy into that crap. No same American would want to buy any new vehicle considering the outsourcing has gone to 100%foreign third world countries that pay their workers peanuts per day. That 50,000 dollar car or 100,000 dollar truck is not only priced double what a late 2,000s model vehicle is, it’s also half as reliable and twice as likely to fall apart before the warranty and equally as likely the car companies do not honor them.

@DantheFixitMan Hi from one Dan to another lol, everyone else calls me by my nickname Doc. Turns out we seen the same video for that "Smoke Machine ". I even have the same bicycle pump in that video-lmao. I've made one and will probably take a copper wire and coil it from the tip of my pen I'm using. Mine is actually a old wood burning pen and will probably be to hot. I'll probably break down and make another after going to Harbor Freight. Now I live in North Carolina so my pickle jar is a Mt. Olive. I've got yta 2010 Rav 4 in the shop with a p0456 that I haven't been able to find. Ran all the usual tests, inspection, plastic wrap the gas cap, shoot all hoses and intake, plus no smell of gas around canister. I'm old school, even thoe I have Launch. I may record a video when I run the smoke test and upload it to my channel here on KZbin. I don't have to many videos on there and have been wanting to add more. Downside to Asian Manufacturers is they have way to many evap hoses. In all the years I've been in the automotive industry, amongst others, only once was it a gas cap. Almost always a hose after hitting with a spray of brake cleaner or starter fluid. I subscribed to your channel. I'd appreciate if you would do the same. Thankyou and Thankyou for your video. 😎👍🍻🇺🇲

@DantheFixitMan Жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, Great question. It will still show smoke farther back at the tank as long as you put it on the line going back to the tank. I have used this to successfully find a leaking rollover valve in a camry recently. It's a little harder to see sometimes, but it will work.

I think a $10 vape pen will work as well.

That works great if the leak is 2 feet away...however the leak is by the gas tank, good luck with a vape pen lol. The vapor dissipates way before it hits that area. The smoke machine this guy made will work, but barely at that distance. Definitely need a bike pump to push the smoke that far.
